Starless Umbra Review

Well, this review is from 2009...

Everlasting Journey Review

Thanks for the review! It's funny you mention the Drunk meter. It's been a few years since I designed that system, so I've actually been debating simplifying it. I just haven't figured out how I want to approach it.

Maybe after getting drunk, you can get general items/money out of the other patrons? That might give you a general reason for it.

Nice review! I'm hoping I can finish part 2 before 2017, haha. DynRPG has really expanded a lot of possibilities, so I'm really excited to be adding features with it that were once impossible. I've never been a huge stats guy, but what always bugged me was that to get any sort of interesting battles going, you need pages and pages of battle events. Steal & Scan were bad enough, so I can't even imagine doing more of those (for my 250+ monster groups). That's why I'm working on battle plugins in DynRPG right now, to hopefully make various "interesting" skills more plug & play.

Things you mentioned that have been fixed or changed since the version you played:
-I got rid of the Auto-battle command. Sorry :( I did this because I hated having to select "Fight" every time. It was another keypress.
-Music is now in mp3 format instead of midi. I noticed a few of the tracks were jarringly loud in NicoB's playthrough (due to pc's with different midi sequencers), so mp3 music is a way of correcting that. I just converted all the midis using soundfonts, so the music itself is more or less the same. Unfortunately this adds 200MB to the game.
-ATB bars are faster (thank god), making battles less boring.
-Customizable settings, like ATB speed, walk/run speed (they can be swapped) & message speed.

I'm waiting for Cherry to come out with a fix for this transparency bug in DynRPG before I release the next version of EJ. That's a big deal for me because I use transparency commands in numerous places. According to one of his posts, it's been fixed in the upcoming DynRPG update.

Although near the end, I was wondering what happened to one of the characters who was with the heroine at the time when I was going through the dungoen, after that... certain scene, I screamed... well, I'm not huge for spoiling the game for those who haven't played, let's just I was just as pissed as Sparrow was, ha ha.

Yesssssss, this is my favorite part of the review. I think the mere fact that people have connected with these characters is the reason why I'm still working on this game. I definitely have plans for Val in part 2. I did want to squeeze in a sidequest for her in Part 1 at one time, but there were already quite a few of them and I didn't want to take the focus away from finding Paul any more that I had.

Part 2 is well underway though! I have the overall plot outline figured out, and about an hour of gameplay done. I've been hammering out as much as time will allow!

Everlasting Journey Review

Awesome review! No complaints here.

Phillip & Floo is definitely the hardest team to use in that last area. With Floo, it helps to have his best equipment (the lightning gloves you get at the end of his sidequest with Bark in Firam). Paul's soldiers are weakest to lightning attacks I think, so that would have done wonders. It also helps to have his third Wind spell. With Phillip, you can pick up the lightning crystal/energem at the end of his sidequest in the Borland Tunnels. Another big resource that might have been overlooked are scrolls. Since they attack all enemies, you could have spammed lightning scrolls.

The Vortikyth/Elite Guard battles were meant to be really hard since they each have a lot of build-up. My beta testers complained that they were too easy, so I beefed them up. :)

With regards to the story (spoilers obv):
I wanted to take the irony route and pair up Athesis & Miles because it's gonna create that conflict between both of them and Sparrow. By that point, it's obvious that Athesis feels differently about Sparrow than he does of her. She doesn't want to settle down and almost treats the people in her life as a convenience. Sparrow was used, and that's a major part of his character's progression, and will be central for a lot of things in Part 2!

You mentioned not liking some of the music. Out of curiosity, which areas? Music is always tough to get right, so I'd like to see if I agree with any of them.

Gameplay is another tough area. I like random battles though, so they'll be staying, haha. I've tried to keep the encounter rates low in larger areas. There's actually a path along the center of the Blue Marshes that takes you right down to Duke, where you might get 1 or 2 battles each trip. I admit, it was a little cruel to make the player go through it every time, but eh. I needed some way to break up the story when you got to Hiram.

Everlasting Journey Review

Thanks for the compliment! It means a lot. I think BurningTyger got stuck at the same spot at Hiram castle you're stuck at. You're supposed to go to the bar and sit down at the empty table (hit enter), and it will open up the next cutscene. You'll be able to visit the king after that.

And yeah, I mainly locked down the exe because of the chipsets. I also wanted it to feel less like an RPG maker game, and more like a game anyone can pick up and play.

Everlasting Journey Review

Yeah I think the last one I played that did that was Skies of Arcadia, and it was awesome. I haven't picked up many recent RPGs, but I tried playing eternal sonata once but it was way too emo.

If we're going for realism now, why can they cast spells at all? Lawyered.

Everlasting Journey Review

Kaempfer, I edited that save you sent me and gave Athesis a Firam Shield/Firam Helm, but the confuse spells were so insane it didn't help anyway. So I skipped through most of the dungeon for you and picked up the two chest items (Poison Stave & Normalizer). I also threw in a few Fire2 Scrolls and equipped Athesis with the Poison Stave.

Simply load the save, walk right, and then up the staircase and fight the boss. He's pretty easy. Use the poison stave until he's affected with poison and then go to town. The worst condition spell he has is Petrify.

Liberty, feel free to use this save as well if you want to play more. When you finish the boss and switch back to Sparrow, the rest of the enemies SHOULDN'T be too much trouble. You'll also have a little more flexibility with what to do before the next big segment.

I already started editing the battle stats yesterday, so I can't get another version out for a while.

Everlasting Journey Review

Great review! It was honest and sincere. I have no complaints!

Here's some tips for people playing right now who can't get through the Isis Tower:

Attack the Spirits first, as they cast reflect (and I think they're the ones who confuse). They're weak to magic, mainly water spells.
There's an item shop owned by a red "Goon" in the 1st floor (rear side). You have to walk up to the 2nd floor first, and back down through another stairway. It was added in because I didn't want Sriole to be accessible until later. If you can make it there, stock up.

I'll make that area easier in the next update, but that probably won't come out for at least another month since almost everything battle related is getting tweaked and revamped.

Fira? Firaga? Firajagahaja? Blech, just make sure you choose suffixes that aren't AWFUL.

Firajagahaja would be perfect. Watrajagahaja, Icajagahaja, Boltajagahaja, Windajagahaja, and Earthajagahaja all have quite the ring to them!

After looking at tutorials: Blue Magic will definitely be in. I'm not sure which character will use it yet, maybe Sueto or Miles.
