What are your thoughts on blood and gore in RPG Maker games?

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

always a plus
9 times out of 10, it invokes hilarity, not shock, terror, or whatever it is you're going for.
Yeah. I'm umming and erring about having blood in my game as I don't want it to come across as corny or unintentionally funny.

They told me I was mad when I said I was going to create a spidertable. Who’s laughing now!!!

A good deal depends on the intended tone; horror games like the Witch's House pull it off reasonably well with little bits, but if you're trying for drama, it tends to fall pretty flat. As a general rule, you're going to need some exceptional writing and art direction to be able to pull it off, especially with the default chibi style.

Personally, I'd say unless you're doing horror, just give it a pass. It's more likely to clash than not.

instead of blood and gore
how about
stud and snore
I guess that's one way of looking at it. I might give it a try and then change it based on the feedback I get.
Works if it fits thematically with what you're trying to do. But if you're just doing it to be edgy then forget it.
Well, while taking a break from the lighthearted Steel Spirit SaGa I plan on making a short dark fantasy game inspired by the likes of Hexen, HeroQuest and the Knights Templar.

Make the villain promise (in a comforting way) their victim no pain will befall them then have them give them a sudden, painless yet utterly over-the-top death. Have them punctuate it by repeating their promise. Turn it into a spectacle unique to your game; don't just lop their head off with a blood fountain and call it drama.

I mean, 16-bit blood successfully conveys "a person or animal bled in this location." If that fact is what you're trying to convey then it works fine. It doesn't take a lot of pixels to represent blood.

If what you're trying to convey is some kind of mood then red pixels probably aren't enough.

always up for cute art and spicy gay romance

Subtle is better imo. A strategically placed blood splatter is more ominous and interesting than a whole room covered in blood.

It doesn't matter whether you're using RPGMaker or another game development engine. What matters is the tone your game is aiming to set; what themes the storyline is going to utilise; the genre you're catering your game towards; the audience you're catering your game towards; what artistic style you're planning to use; and so on. Lots of factors, none of which are the engine.

Yeh but RPG Maker has limitations and imo those limitations make it hard to create believable violence when it comes to blood and gore... unless you try hard.

To correct, you are right. There are lots of factors, one of which is the tools you use which includes the engine, simply because tools have limitations and direct you towards a certain kind of end product. Art is made within boundaries, and these boundaries help define and shape the art.

ANYWAY violence is okay in your game. Whether the conflict enhances the statement your game is making is debatable, and I'd say that it's more difficult to create meaningful gore in RPG Maker but not impossible and it can sometimes be effective.
