Breaking Out Review

So let’s go see if Ratty524 manages to do a fine enough job that this game can pass off as a successful Chinese knockoff of it or if it’s better left burying it with the rest of the unsold copies of E.T. in the dump… Let’s go find out!

Your reviews kill me, man. xD

Thanks for your feedback! I'm not sure what causes the freezing issues as the game tends to play fine on my end. It could possibly be a browser issue where focus is lost on the game, but I could be wrong.

And yes, the music was composed by me, with sound effects generated through Chiptone. It's definitely not my expertise. xD

Breaking Out Review

Thanks for your feedback! I definitely could have done more with this game, but it was a struggle to learn the software and intended to be something I could get out quickly.

I might whip up another short game in Stencyl sometime especially since I learned quite a bit from the feedback I got from this game.

The keys you can use are limited, and mostly the wasd range, so not really much more accessible, last I checked.

Hmm, I'll try to see if there is anything I could change with it, since it's tied to a custom script.

I can't make guarantees, though. I'm still pretty new to RGSS. :(

Thank you for the review! I'm going to see how I can tame the goofiness of this game and while Leanne is meant to weird people out, I could handle her a bit better.

For the Gamdev forest maze, you can talk to an old women all the way in Makskor Town to recieve a hint on how to find the correct path.
Basically, the best way to figure out the directions she gives you is to write it down, and hold the arrows towards a mirror or reflective surface to get the answer.

As for the controls, it's definitely designed for the "z" key being close to the "x" key, but I was aware that not everyone would want to play this way. There is an option in the menu that allows you to change your controls during the game.

There is no rule against giving scores for demos. There has been discussion about tying review scores to versions of a game but I'm of the opinion that this introduces a whole host of other problems and thus it isn't likely to change.

It's fine to give a score to a demo.

What problems would it introduce, honestly?

Alright, I added you back in as a developer, Link!

To be fair, I listed everyone who made a Pokemon submission as "developer" here
Not true. You didn't list me as a dev because you said I didn't do anything beyond submit a pokemon. Others helped with designing areas and gyms and trainers and that's what got them on the dev list, as I understand it.

I'd rather have ms for this than be able to maybe submit a review.

edit: and nobody would be able to affect the core game because isn't it a premade pokemon project template?

edit2: in fact I'm not listed anywhere on the page. If I cared that would hurt my feelings.

iirc you specifically asked me to remove you from the list.

Anyway, thanks Dragon_Quill. I'm glad we were able to have a civil discussion about this amiss the controversy this review stirred.

How about this - since Ratty524 sounds like they'll be changing a bunch so this review won't reflect the finished product's content, and apparently a ridiculous number of people have at least a slight connection to this and so can't give their own review which I wasn't aware would be a problem, I'll request the rating be edited to no rating.

Would that help?

It'd be welcome, but your call.

Testers may review a game. Developers may not.

If you are on the list of developers and remove yourself so that you can review the game you made, I reserve the right to feed you to the locusts. That is all.

To be fair, I listed everyone who made a Pokemon submission as "developer" here, and many of them, including iddalai, haven't influenced the core of the project beyond that, so I think I know where he's coming from.

Thank you for the follow-up! It really clears up a lot and demonstrates where I can specifically improve in this project. I'll try to explore Leanne's character a bit more and the other things you mentioned.

I think the only reason I made the "tough guy" line a single skin color was due to the other alternate outfits being tied to references (Outfit 2 is colored similarly to Goku from DB, and Outfit 3 is actually supposed to be similar to Knuckle Joe from the Kirby series. Perhaps, making the default outfit have darker skin tones would alleviate the issue? It would certainly offset the fact that every other character's default skin is white.

I heard someone say something recently about comedy that I really agree with. In comedy, nothing should be off-limits, but you need to know the room.

Is this comedy (and this game) targeted at an RMN audience or a general Poke'mon audience? Which jokes work for who?

It is primarily targeted towards the RMN userbase. I still plan on expanding its view to other communities, however, for extra publicity.

What happened with the post of the reviewer that has nothing on it?
It was hidden and then he edited it all into nothing, I dunno what was on it

For the record, I do not know what they said either. I'm not the one who hid their post.
