Pokémon RMN Version Review

I partly agree and disagree with what you are saying Hali.

Sure, putting violent themes in Looney Tunes or Mario calls out to itself in a negative way, but think of why it does that beyond just "it's intended for kids." The worlds of both of those examples are so removed from reality that seeing any aspect of our modern world in those examples raises an eyebrow.

Aside from the fact that superpowered animals exist and the writing style, Pokemon isn't that detached as those franchises. They take place in modern settings and subtly touch upon aspects that people can relate to.

As a matter of fact, Pokemon is definitely not as restrictive about its content as you make it out to be. There have been references to people killing/eating Pokemon and even the recent entry in the series has references to people and pokemon dying during wartime. That's just one example aside from the questionable, darker dex entries some Pokemon have, and content that had to be axed in localization (the passed-out old man in Viridian City).

The difference, however, is that this content is kept both infrequent and presented in a transparent manner, which is definitely something I could afford to take note of in tweaking this game. That, and situations like the interaction between Leanne and Prof. Manic are so difficult to pull off effectively without it coming off as slimy.

Anyways I didn't play much PRMN cause it bored me rather quickly, but if the things mentioned in this review are indeed in the game then I'm sort of glad I didn't continue, cause I would have been pretty lamed out by it.

Can you explain your thoughts about why it was boring? Preferably through PM because the comment feed in this review is already becoming quite a mess.

Pokémon RMN Version Review

I'm half-black, and I never saw Afropup, in all of its iterations (the current design is actually altered a bit from Nerdybastard's original concept art, but the same ideas were still there), to be offensive. Afros, and black hair in general is something that I think every African-American should appreciate despite the cultural opposition towards just about anything African in our society. In that regard, I adored the cultural nod the Afropup line portrayed and okay-ed it for this project.

I could be wrong, but the negative stereotypes surrounding afros and the "funk" culture prevalent in the '70s were more than likely concocted by bigots after African Americans took part in it, in an attempt to dismantle and ridicule their culture. This was a time where there was a strong cultural movement among African Americans to embrace their identity.

As others have mentioned, I'm open to making adjustments, but right now I feel like a lot of these call-outs on a racist portrayal are taken way out of context.

But I think the game could lay off things like Noob Cave and other "RMN" specific things.

B-but that was the point. *curls up in fetal position* ;_;

(...Did people start drama over this review?)

Thanks for the review.

It's interesting how many of the "sexist" aspects of the game stood out to you. They certainly weren't intended to be that way. Rather, they're meant to be unique and slightly off-kilter situations played for laughs. In life, people's sexual preferences vary, and someone openly admitting they aren't into their own sex is as normal and natural as admitting you aren't into the opposite sex. Sexual preferences, as a whole, isn't even a defining aspect in this game and isn't frequent in occurrence.

In regards to Leanne, she's supposed to be insane. She's a kind of comic relief in the sense that she's there to make you, as a player going through a whirlwind of experiences throughout the game, feel awkward or perplexed at every encounter, hence the entire Triple Triad scene and even her sudden affection towards you.

Speaking of which, her similar interactions towards girl-characters is entirely intentional in that regard. It's so the people who play female characters don't miss out, and also to imply that Leanne is bisexual.

Anyway,
Text which often has a mistake or two in it, as well. There’s errors all through this.

Yeah, many people have pointed them out already, and I'm working to correct it.

(Also, the evolution animation is horrible – the sprite spins in a circle really fast. Look, what’s wrong with just flipping back and forth? I realize this is really petty but it’s going through more effort to make something look so much worse!)

Duly noted. I'll look towards replacing it.

And my one true love, flavor text? Exists for the trash cans and only the trash cans, and often in service of mentioning something gross or edgy.

I was originally leaning towards no flavor text at all. In the official games, they so often don't really add much to the experience and many of them are ignorable. After watching some people play this game, however, I might reconsider. I'm going to make a blog post to get a vote on it soon.
As for being gross and edgy, I won't deny that, but what else would you expect to find by digging through trash? :P

While we're on the subject of edge, the overall tone of the game was meant to be less out of sheer immaturity and more of a conscious choice that I decided at the start. The game is supposed to be a representation of RPG Maker.net in many aspects. It's a diverse, laid-back, and definitely quirky community. That, and I kind of wanted to play with a Pokemon setting that didn't take itself very seriously while also acknowledging more mature subject matters exist. It was a better option to me than going with the notoriously sterile writing of the official games or the excessively dark and edgy settings that so many Pokemon fan games employ these days.

And there’s a third female character who also hits on you regardless of gender…and do I even need to add that no male characters hit on you regardless that I saw? You could probably guess. Because that might bug male players.

This is actually a good call and something that flew over my head. I'll gladly add some males who hit on you!

The second gym introduces what I thought I wanted, puzzles that are an actual challenge…except actually they’re bad reaction time minigames where you just keep doing it until you get it right with no consequences for failure but your own rising boredom, and adding insult to injury, we’re told this twitchy reaction time game is somehow a meditation minigame.

Yeaaaaah that minigame is kind of borked. I'm not sure whether to rework it to make it more responsive/easier to complete or rework it entirely.

While flailing around on the final one before the gym leader, somehow the game decided it wasn’t going to open my start menu any longer so I couldn’t save and I decided I was done with it.

That's a very unusual bug. I'll look into it.

Overall, sorry you couldn't enjoy this.

We sorted this out though PM. I'm pretty confident now that Rose is learning from her mistakes and I'm not taking down this review.

If you guys like, I could take a shot at this game, though from what little I've seen of this project so far, I probably won't have many differing opinions from Katana over here.

Moe Wars Visual Novel: Golden Daisy Review

The problem I have with the story is how this novel is obviously the author's shameless self-fulfilling wet dream. The story is entirely built around the author slapping together every anime fetish he has, and culminated it into an inconsistent and incoherent mess. Unless I'm completely out of the loop with the fanservice genre, it seems like these fetishes are all thrown in for absolutely no reason.

The entire point of this scene was to build up the fact that the main character had to receive a shot on her barely clothed butt, just so her friend could call it cute and laugh at her.

My sincere condolences for putting up with this. Now I know to avoid it.
