So my computer crashed yesterday while in the middle of working on PotF. After restarting to assess the damages, I found I could not load up to project. "Unexpected File Format" was the error message I got when clicking on the VX ACE Project file.

So I took a project file from a different project and replaced my old one and tried again. This time, with the message, "failed to load actor data"

... Uh oh.

Luckily, I had backed up all my files to an external hard drive just 4 days ago. If worst came to worst, I would only have lost 4 days worth of work. I wanted to see the extent of the damages, so I replaced the actor script file in the corrupted project with the backed up version.

"Failed to load class data"

...Shit.

So, after some experimenting, I learned that the entire database in my current project was fried. All my work on tweaking actor stats, equipment properties, and even script changes are gone. Luckily, most of my work over the last 4 days has been mapping and eventing, which WASN'T corrupted from the sudden crash. What system changes I DID make, I actually logged in a separate text document so I could talk about them in future blogs.

After replacing all the corrupted data files and redoing the system changes on my list, I'm not back to where I was before the crash, only putting me behind one day instead of 4.

Boy, wouldn't that have sucked if I hadn't been keeping regular backups of my project, right? Right?!

So when was the last time YOU backed up your project?

My past self paid me in sanity to say this.

I think it's a good idea backing up every day, really. Just thinking about having to redo an entire day is maddening.

Good job avoiding most of the damage, Red! Hopefully there are no further permanent problems with your computer after that crash.

I just backed up my entire RPG Maker folder on another computer yesterday, plus I always copy my projects over to USB-drives every single time I have worked on them. Some of the smaller ones are stored in my locker here on RMN as well.
(My first RPG Maker project ever got corrupted at one point, and while I managed to restore most of it eventually, that event has evidently made me a little paranoid about backing up files.)
God damn that's scary shit. I tend to back up on Dropbox/Google Drive and even in just on my pc I tend to have some copies. My pc crashes a lot so this is a legit fear of mine.
You should back up the whole thing to a thumb drive or three as well. The more redundancy the better.

I rent my own website, which I use as a backup repository, as well. There are also a few online services (including RMN's locker itself, hint hint) that will give you a limited amount of space for free. You can easily store a database and a hundred 60KB map files in there with the kind of space they give you these days.

I think one of the smartest things to do in this regard would be to use version control. A lot safer than simply storing your data on Dropbox or USB sticks, plus some other advantages... Here's a RPG Maker focused tutorial on using something like Bitbucket to version control your project.

Now THAT is a neat idea. Thanks for the article, YM! Revision control is something I've neglected if I'm not doing team projects, but it's a really great tool.
