Kind of a shame that the IRC channel no longer exists. I've never made a Discord account and I never will.

What's wrong with Discord? Been using it for years and it seems fine.

My only reason for not spending a lot of time on RMN Discord is just a handful of unpleasant people who make hanging around there less fun.
Discord is really useful but I don't really jive with the realtime community aspect, same with IRC so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Like you, I'll never make a Discord account because Discord is a closed-source software: you never know what they do with your data and your conversations. I much prefer Mumble.

Many things. It's a primary source of data mining. The lack of transparency in their operations makes them every bit as bad as Facebook, if not worse than. This article goes into details why Discord itself is spyware and you shouldn't trust it.

Agreed. Ever since I made the full switch to GNU/Linux, I've been on a mission to embrace the promotion of FLOSS as much as possible. Yes, I know that the program I use to make my game is proprietary and its source code is unavailable, but it's an old program and it's as good as it gets in order to make my dream come true. I do play and test it with EasyRPG Player instead of the default RPG_RT file.

I was on the IRC channel maybe once or twice, ever. Might have been on the Slack channel as often. Discord, I didn't mess with until after I became a mod, and even then, I mostly just pop in and out every so often, and generally lurk.

Oh wow, a lot of scary stuff! Thanks for sharing!
I mean, it's spyware in the same sense that Chrome, Youtube, the entire Unity engine, Steam, iTunes, Instagram, etc are all "spyware." You can get a nice red-on-black scarepage for all those too if you want them https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/index.html

It's more a matter of what your expectations of privacy are with any corporate internet-connected software and the associated analytics.
just unplug your ethernet cord at this point if you want to avoid leaving any kind of trace
There are privacy-focused browsers out there that you can use, such as Ungoogled Chromium and IceCat. Hell, even just modifying your Firefox's profile (User.js and Userchrome.css) can be a step in the right direction. Librewolf is a great fork of Firefox that I could get comfortable with using as my daily driver, as I'm still wondering if I should stay with Pale Moon (especially with the recent controversies).

Anyway, I just thought it's a shame that the IRC channel is gone. I'm fully aware that there's a way to bridge Discord, Matrix, and others in order to keep everyone engaged. Maybe it's for the best to remain on the forums and using e-mail for communication...
What's discord? Doesn't everyone still use MSN Messenger?
Everyone collects data at this point. Just pick a poison and be responsible about what you share.

RMN would probably be spyware on that site.
Thank you for sharing that article about spyware.

I've also fully switched to Linux and FLOSS. What's great about them are the user freedom and the low resource requirements. You regain control of your user experience and get out of the destructive "throw away your hardware and get a new one" philosophy of the proprietary software.

I only mine the data to post amusing topic title combos in the Welp forum thread https://rpgmaker.net/forums/topics/16261/

The A is for Anderson? But that's my last name.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

I don't disagree with complaints about Discord, but I find it ironic that you would be perfectly fine using IRC, a program that broadcasts your IP address to every single user instead of just to the people in charge of the company.

IRC is just a protocol, much like HTTPS or FTP. Much of the security side depends on the server configuration and which client you're using. Depending on the server, your IP address can be disguised (e.g. Rizon) without having to use a bouncer or hostmask. Even then, it's not hard to change your IP address through the use of a VPN, proxy, or Tor exit node. On servers that ban such things, well, you're taking that risk yourself. Because IRC itself can be decentralized, one can have more freedom by not being at the mercy of a corporation such as Facebook, Twitter, Discord, or Reddit (even if their forum software itself is open-source software).

Also, an IP address doesn't tell you as much about a user as their phone number does. That's where the privacy problem lies for me. Discord tracks more than just your user agent and IP address, whereas an IRC server usually requests the bare minimum. As well, if you have a private conversation with someone via IRC, there are ways to encrypt your messages (e.g. OTR, which is supported by Pidgin, HexChat, Weechat, and a few other IRC clients by means of the plugins).

I do kind of miss the IRC days, but I think it's more about the people than the service... I think I just knew more RM folks back then;;
I don't think discord needs your phone number, dude. XDDD

Honestly, I figure someone, somewhere is tracking shit. Your ISP certainly is. It's not that big a deal and I'd rather be able to talk to friends and the community in real time than jump through hoops just to source software that does a limited version of the same thing for more work and less 'abilities'. Not like I'm doing anything worth tracking and what are they gonna do, sell my email address to some peeps? Big dealio. Use a fake email instead, easy enough.
