Umbral Soul

I keep checking this comments section every now and then, but haven't posted. But I feel I need to, so here goes.

In the midst of people pushing to ask for updates, negative comments, and even outright insulting people, you've shown saintly levels of patience. But remember that there's also those who are doing the same, who'll wait for the update to your game, no matter how long it takes.

The original Umbral Soul was a great game, and still is, and you've put a ton of work into it since. Take as long as you need, and ignore the naysayers. I personally would much rather see a fully fleshed out product and wait much longer than see something rushed and unfinished just because people keep asking for it.

Make your awesome game even more awesome, and take as long as you need. I'll keep waiting, as will many others with actual patience, and thank you for continuing to put your time, and hard work into your amazing game.

Yeah I know this post comes off as pandering and sucking-up, but I mean, I feel like some positive reinforcement is needed with all the... Other, stuff. >_>;

Final Fantasy: Sky Warriors Review

Will do. And I think it speaks to the quality of the game that I was still able to enjoy the story despite not being familiar with those two games. The story still ties neatly together, and the ending in particular makes everything come together in a very satisfying fashion... Despite being a bit rough on the feels.

A pre-sequel to Final Fantasy 4 could be interesting, but I dunno how much potential there is there. I just think of a game where you play as Golbez and the four elemental fiends and I start squeeing internally, hah.

Final Fantasy: Sky Warriors

Went back to the game after reading the posts above and managed to find two extra secret bosses I'd missed. Now I'm pretty confident that I've done literally everything I can. Save for huh, getting the bad ending. Kind of wish I'd kept a backup save for that.

Varn, if you're still looking for ol' Mephisto, here's a clue. Should make finding him pretty easy.

Not all tombs in the game will display 'This is a tomb' when inspected. Maybe you spotted one with different text at some point in your journey?

Also, Illy, I'd go and double-check because I'm pretty certain the 'good' ending splash screen didn't have a question mark after it. I actually expected something like that and waited on the screen for a bit to see if it'd appear, but nope. So I assume it's possible you used the wrong image by mistake?

Final Fantasy: Sky Warriors

Hi there! I just got done playing your game, and actually have a (very flattering) review pending already. Hopefully it'll go through, as... Well, it's my first review on this site, ever. I'm more of a lurker really. That said, I loved your game to bits, and it'll show in the review, hah.

But that's not why I'm posting in the comments too. I ran into a few bugs while playing, and I thought I'd report main ones.

The first minor one is that at some point (can't remember specifically where) when 'disembarking' from the Canoe in the Earth Cave, just before going into stairs, the sprite change didn't occur and for a moment I was essentially canoe-ing on land. I didn't really test this further, as it only happened for essentially two steps before I went down to the next level.

The second minor one is that in the looping 'maze' room in Flying Fortress, late in the game, the teleporters aren't properly assigned. So you actually need to step right back into the teleporter you just entered the area through to proceed, instead of finding the next one.

Third minor bug is that the treasures in Elfland are invisible for some reason. They're still there, just they display no graphic.

The next bug, and the game breaking one, is in the Flying Fortress. Specifically in Tiamat's Room. Once entered, for some reason, I was immediately able to start walking through walls, thin air, and so forth. It essentially removed all collision detection on my character. I reloaded my save, tried again, and had the exact same results. This persisted even when I left to the world map, and the only way I was able to fix it is by heading to Onrac (which I couldn't enter due to having no collision) and pressing the 'use' key, which prompted me to enter the town, which fixed the bug.

I dunno if that last one will be an isolated incident, but I thought I'd report it, as it's pretty severe. Hopefully that helps!

Huh, really? Serves me right for thinking she was just a healer then, and not leveling her despite liking her. Still, if I need a healer in the ultimate edition, she'll probably be my go to. I want to use her to see what kind of dialogue she has during the story, so.

Umbral Soul

Ah yeah, I understand the concept about New Game +, I've dabbled in RPGMaker coding a bit before, and I can definitely see why it'd be a nightmare.

No healing spell for Pandora anymore huh? I can see how that'd change the whole dynamic since she was effectively my main healer. Without her doing that, I might finally have an excuse to use Demora! Yay. I loved her, but since Lanith was so devastating and I already had a healer, I couldn't justify taking Demora with me.

I look forward to seeing the difficulty changes made in the ultimate edition, for sure, and I'm glad to hear that you share the same concerns as I do over the sequel's storyline. It's good to be self-aware when it comes to these kind of things, it'll definitely help with the quality of the game and the writing.

Oh and I'm the type of person who usually keeps several backup saves. So no worries there! I learned the hard way.

Umbral Soul

Managed to find all of the final scenarios with your help, thanks!

Anyways, everything was great, the game has some grammatical issues but I'm sure several people pointed that out already. Oh and there are some mapping issues inside the bandit den in North Pass (you can walk on treasure and shelves and whatnot) but asides from that, very much glitch free, good job.

I think if I were to suggest anything it'd be two things. One would be to have a 'superboss' a kind of optional boss for people to have a true challenge against. Those are always fun, and overall the difficulty curve of the game is a bit low, which isn't necessarily a bad thing! Focusing on the story is important too. But yeah, I only ever had a party member die once, and it was during the Athena fight. The one you're not supposed to win. >.>

My other suggestion would be a New Game + mode, just to be able to replay through the game with an absurdly powerful party (keep that exp from the final boss!) and mess around, maybe try some summons you haven't yet and whatnot.

Other than that, nothing I can think of. I hope the sequel will manage to keep the story just as interesting. I believe Umbral Soul's strongest point is that it tells an atypical story, often JRPG tell the story of the bad guy, sure, but inevitably at some point they turn around and become good guys and that just gets... Boring. I'm glad the storyline stuck to it's guns with this one, while still giving the characters plenty of personality.

But yeah, I'm just worried that a typical story about heroes saving the world won't be nearly as entertaining. But perhaps you can manage it! I look forward to it either way, good luck!

Umbral Soul

Hi! Just finished your game, and I wanted to say that it was extremely amazing. This just took the top spot as my favorite RPGMaker game ever, and that's no easy feat since I've played some really, really good ones. I'm already excited to play the sequel, and I'll certainly be giving the ultimate edition a shot.

I haven't scrolled through all of the other comments, but any chances that Lanith will return to play a major role in the sequel? I'm sure she'll be there, but I admit I'm going to dreadfully miss her if she's not playable. She was just one of those characters who really grew on me. (I couldn't stand her originally) So great job on doing that particular aspect really well!

I'm also one of those crazy people who managed to defeat Athena during the first round around level 28~ I managed this through good use of double infernal awakening and Sadistic Lash and being really, really careful with my healing. Really damn tough battle!

One final question. I've beaten the entire game, and yet I'm still missing the very last 4 scenarios/cutscenes you can view when activating the bed. Any chance I could get a hint/some help? I'm really stumped at the moment.
