Why is it that whenever I try to empty my head in relative silence I hear a dull, high-pitched ringing?

Hi Seiromem,

That tone is called Tinnitus. It is a nervous property of human hearing and fairly normal in a quiet environment. I suppose you could think of it as the aural nerves' dial tone. When noise in your environment resumes, the nerves are stimulated again with signals from the inner ear, and the tone goes away.
