Is creativity a resource you spend on project or do you have to work on something to generate creativity?

I think it works both ways. But for me personally, when I start/work on a project it's because I have creativity and it's a great outlet to let that flow. At the same time, having an established project always helps generate creativity. If I'm at work or out and about I gather ideas and think of new/different ways to do things.

It's a very symbiotic relationship for me.

Personally I have to step away from something to generate the motivation to work on it again, but I also have to use motivation to do other things, so It takes too long to save up enough

My resource management skills are pretty bad, no wonder I'm bad at RTS games like age of empires.

I get that. You have allocate your time and energy efficiently among many things. And a lot of the time it seems to be lopsided on what you spend your effort on.

Planning is great and all, but for a lot of us indie developers it isn't a race. Never burn yourself out on something because then you'll just get a sub-par product in the end. If you have to step away to gather your motivation then there's nothing wrong with that. Apply your built up energy to what's most important at the time.

It's gonna be different for everybody.

But, I love Age of Empires sooo

Sometimes you generate it by working on something, sometimes you spend it all and have to wait until your turn comes up. But you're vulnerable to attack during that phase.
I guess i'm one of those people who is just always creating stuff, either for my job or for my own projects. I cant imagine ever having it feel like a resource. I get depressed when I don't have enough time to be creative.

well, for me, using that resource up is a cathartic experience, but if I try and spend what I don't have it builds up stress instead.

Creativity gets you started on a project. Discipline keeps you going past day 2.

For me, if I spend too much time on creating (especially marathoning one thing)I get hella burnt out and need to spend a while just consuming entertainment instead. It's annoying.

I move between illustration, animation, film making and game development, if I get burnt out on one I usually just work on one of the others.

Multiple types of creating helps, yeah.

I think my main problem RN is I have too many drawing type responsibilities, so my gam mak is falling behind! :(

I'll try swapping between writing and game development. Also, relevant:
