How do you do puzzles good?

author=Sailerius
I highly recommend you play The Witness. Playing the game is a master class in how to design excellent puzzles.

I thought about checking out that game, but when I learned it was all puzzles, I lost interest. Lol. Puzzles just don't do it for me.

Anything from Kinetic Cypher / Lufia 2 is good. Also an article by the guy who made said KA game: https://rpgmaker.net/articles/3/

I think your random levers idea doesn't seem to be much figuring out through. From the sounds of it seems like lame guesswork where you (based on my assumption) pull a switch and travel to a door you hopefully opened up. You need to establish something that functions logically (ie walking on this floor will slide you forward like ice) and is consistent. The player should know what the goal is and how the tools work, but not how exactly to solve it in the middle at first. The fun part is knowing what a switch would do consistently (not random) and trying to figure something out despite that. If you want a quick puzzle sometimes there's no shame in stealing say... a block pushing puzzle from pokemon/sokobon and do your own spin on it.

But... if you're still clueless or just don't like doing puzzles at all, it's ok to just make the game battle centric if that's all you're into. Or just make the dungeon have an aspect to it that affects the battles. Like maybe you have to give up a party member to open a door remotely. The door puzzle itself isn't much of a puzzle but the fact that you have to temporarily lose a party member (and choose who you lose) adds to the strategy and difficulty. It's important to add variety to the game but also make it feel like it belongs.

Thanks for your help. I am terrible at puzzle making. In games, they are the things I like the least. So naturally, I'm not very good at them. Having said that, I'd like to get good at them, but I don't know how to go into such depth that a lot of games do. Thanks for your pointers, and your link. I'll check it out. And thanks.

How do you do puzzles good?

Hello guys. I was wondering if anyone knew how to make compelling puzzles? I'm working on a puzzle-piece for the final dungeon of the game and puzzles are unfortunately my weakest point. Never been good at them. The basic concept I can come up with is find 4 random levers that opens the door to the final boss.

Anyone have any examples of awesome puzzles?

Release Something: Gotta Go Fast!!!

What if you totally don't want to release something because you hate your game with utmost passion? Or, you have a friend who won't "release something" because they're shy and scared about other's opinions? Lol.

Looking for a Climbing Script

Hello, today I am looking for a very specific script, that may have not been invented yet, for RPG Maker VX Ace!

Specifically, I'm looking for a script that will allow characters to climb over obstacles.

I'm looking for:

  • Ability to climb over obstacles that are 1 tile high, such as wall tiles, with the press of a button.
Pressing a button causes the character to jump up and grab the tile wall. Pressing left, or right on the keypad allows the character to shimmy across the wall. Pressing up makes the character climb over the obstacle. Pressing down makes the player drop back down to the tile below.

If anybody has any resources for this please let me know in the comments! Thanks.

Why not make a game page for your project, then make a blog asking for some help? That way they'll be linked straight to pictures of what you have so far, a summary of the game story and can tell whether they like the idea or not. A Help blog will also appear in this forum too.

(To make a game page just hover over 'Submissions' in the top bar and choose Submit Game, then follow the steps. Easy~ And you don't have to put an upload online until you're ready (also, if you have an upload you want a tester to check out, you can upload it to your page with the Testers only choice ticked, then add the testers to your page as testers and they'll be the ones who can download it. The rest of the site won't know it even exists! And, uh, free, reliable hosting?)

Thank you for that information. :)

Need Assistance Finishing RPG

Hello,

I am looking to receiving help finishing a game that I've been working on for a very long time. No matter what I do I keep going back to it and editing it, but it's gotten to the point that I can no longer do this by myself. I am requesting assistance to help finish this game.

Details about the game are: It is a "classic" turn-based style RPG with that classic "Final Fantasy" feel.

I may need help re-writing, or editing the story, characters, or plot. I may need assistance handling the database of the game, including writing interesting scenes, battles, and leveling progression.

I am looking for assistance in side-quests and overall completion of this game, so that I can get it out the door for people to experience.

I cannot pay, and the game will be free to download, but you will get your name in the credits, and be recognized for your effort. This would be a team-based assignment, and I would need help collaborating on what would make this the best game possible, even though it is a simple RPG.

If you have more questions, or would like to help, please contact me via PM, or leave your details in the comments below.

Thank you all for your time. :)

The demo you are playing is currently out-of-date, meaning a lot of errors and bugs were released into that demo prior to beta-testing and bug checks. Please wait for the finalized version and/or contact me for further details. In the meantime, please look forward to more information on the completion of the game before it is finally released on July 15th, 2012. Thank you :)
