Looking for new games to Let's Play

author=Brady
Personally, I find the idea of LPs to be more of a critical engagement; they play the game with no intention to big-up or berate the title, and just look at it in a critical and analytical perspective while discussing the game and it's content. It's basically a step-by-step review of the entire game.
The personality comes in after that, because if it was just some monotone saying "this is good", "this is bad" no one'd watch it, so if you can connect or engage with the LPrs, you get a more entertaining experience.

The problem is when you find someone who's more interested in getting their name or quirky/fake personality out there than actually analysing the game itself, and spend most of the time trying to make stupid jokes or repeat catchphrases while forgetting to discuss what's actually happening in the game while they're doing that.

I do enjoy a good LP, but it just seems that, by ratio, written LPs tend to be more likely to be the kind of LPs I enjoy; it's hard to force a stupid personality while writing, so folk just get on with the LP and the humour comes naturally.
Although I may be a tad biased in that respect, since the first LP I ever saw was written, and at that time I had absolutely no idea what was going on; I thought it was a review at first then realised it was like 35 pages long with pictures of every single scene in the game!

Not that video LPs are all bad; I feel for you, trying to compete with the very people that turn off your prospective viewers. But aye, making an effort to get feedback is a good thing. You ever start to go off track and folk will often be quick to remind you...and that's exactly what you want!

Now I can fully see where you are coming from. I never looked at it from the point of view that people would change the atmosphere and gameplay of the game to get in their forced catchphrases and 'personality'. It is actually one of the things that puts me off the bigger LP's at times. For example pewdiepie again. His earlier LP's of Amnesia were good because he was genuinely scared, didn't know what was gonna happen and reacted in a natural way to comfort himself. Now it just seems as if he has gotten used to things, yet continues to force his original reactions to satisfy his subscribers expectations.
I always looked at it that the LP was fully off the cuff, non-rehearsed impromptu feedback given at the exact moment that the players are experiencing the game. It's what has lead me to purchase certain games and avoid others. But now that you mention it, people trying to force their 'personality' into the video is the sole reason I always avoid minecraft LP's.

But you have lead me towards actually finishing off these LP's series with a review video giving an overall detailed review of the game in question. I've given feedback to the creators of the two previous indie games I have done but not in a video format. So thank you for helping me understand some of the things that put people off watching LP's. It's hard to see things from somebody else's point of view on the internet as they usually get aggressive towards the person for not having the same opinion.

In fact, I am highly tempted to LP your game Syma as it looks like it has some good quirks to it. So hopefully you enjoy it but if not I will do the planned video review at the end that you can just skip to ;).

Am I the only person that's mostly put off of LPs by the fact that a majority of LPrs spend way too much time and effort trying to put on some stupid personality? I actually prefer photo+text LPs for old gameboy games and such, because the attention is generally focussed more on the game, with some humour there, rather than all the attention on the player themselves, with an occasional mention of the game :(

Can't imagine a minecraft LP would be fun to watch...would feel kinda like trying to watch an LP of Amnesia...kinda defeats the point to watch someone else do it, I reckon.

To be honest I think you are the only person :P
I actually really enjoy watching specific personalities play the game as they add another depth of entertainment to the game. For example pewdiepie in his earlier amnesia plays was hilarious. The game would scare the crap out of me yet watching his reaction to the scare would make me burst out laughing. It's good to have that sort of comfort afterwards, (as I am quite a bad scaredy-cat XD)

I can understand where you are coming from about just enjoying the game. But then I think the problem you have there is that you are the type of person who would rather be playing the game themselves than watch someone else play. I have that same attitude when it comes to industry developed RPG LP's . I can't watch someone else play it as I would rather be doing it myself and experiencing the story first-hand and immersing myself in the universe that the developer spent so long setting up. It's different for Indie titles as the story isn't as complicated and long at times and I can focus on the personality playing it along with the actions that are actually taking place in-game.

As for the stupid personality. You hit the nail on the head there. Youtube has been flooded with tiny squeaky voiced annoying immataters who have over-saturated the LP's market with terribly produced content. They put little to no effort in to their videos and spam the content all over the internet expecting to get positive feedback.

It's down-heartining at times for me to realize that I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. On one end I have all the well-known names who I have to strive towards competing with by promoting myself but yet not copy their content. And on the other end I have to compete with all these little kids who I have to stand out from and yet get grouped with because I do Let's Plays and have to genuinely promote myself to obtain a dedicated audience. The only thing that keeps me enjoying producing the videos is the active subscribers that enjoy listening and watching my content and also the game developers who I like to contact and give feedback on their productions. It's the reason why I joined up to the sight and create a forum topic now and then to get in touch with people.

Feel free to try Syma, if you'd like to closely inspect my jewels~
Could totally use more feedback on that, and it's being designed purely on a "when a new idea for a level comes up; make it" approach and is pretty basic visually, using only a handful of mixed tilesets.

It's not comedic/scary though, and is currently pretty light on story altogether...

Either way!

As for inspecting the jewels of strangers, then totally need more specifics. I would suggest Skinwalker because that's all about horror, setup and atmosphere (and has appropriate visuals too) but is really light on gameplay elements...

D:

Both of them seem like awesome games. I'm actually surprised they haven't got more downloads. I think I'll give Syma a go on Wednesday and post some content of it. Thanks.

Anything but Minecraft.

I can understand what you mean about it. There are soooo many people doing minecraft stuff nowadays that it's ruined the appeal for me. I like to watch things that are unique and quirky. Hopefully building my own videos into that at some point.

Well, what exactly kind of indie games are you interested in ? RPG Maker games ? 3D games ? Featured games ? :D

The RPG Maker games of course. One of the reasons why I do it is because I like to get in touch with the creators and thank them for all their hard work. Too many games being made today that focus too much on graphics and not the content of the game itself. And there's so many hidden gems here that stay true to the old values.

Looking for new games to Let's Play

Hey guys,
I've been looking for a new game to do videos for but I'm spoilt for choice on here. My first two games where I'm Scared of Girls and Fey so I'm looking for something a little scary or possibly comedic. Mix things up a bit.
I've got a couple other series on the go at the moment but no Indie games which I love to do and I need to fill my upload schedule again.
So any suggestions are welcome at this point?
Show me your jewels people!

Great seeing this game again, great video too =] I found it entertaining to watch. Finally what a great title for chapter one, I got chills down my spine seeing it again =]

Thanks for the encouragement.
I loved this title as well. Can't wait for the final release. Had to make a little homage to it in my new playthrough it was that good :D.

Just updated the post with the rest of the videos.
The last one will be up when I fix a mistake I made in the editing process.
Been so sick lately that I've been signed off work. So glad I have a ton of content scheduled because of all the lovely people here. :D
If anyone has any other recommendations for games please get in touch with me.

thanks for selecting this so much :)

Just managed to finish the game today. Hope I got the proper ending if there's supposed to be multiple ones. And I hope I didn't miss anything out by playing around with the menu at the end. Will be uploading it over the next few days.
Let me know what you think.
And Moga let me know if I missed anything. Really enjoyed the game and I'm pretty sure I'll be doing another one of your games soon! :)

Thanks

I'll download it now and get started on a LP. It should be up within the next day or so. I'll try and get touch with the developer aswell and see if he can feature and promote the videos aswell.
Thanks for the recommendation!
