What about a newbie irritates you?

I wrote newbies THAT think they are the shit. In fact looking at your quote I thought I had missed a word but then when I went up to edit my post the "that" was already there!

And I'll say this. Every newbie that think he/she is the shit is not. That's not a generalization, that's hard cold fact.

What about a newbie irritates you?

The thing about newbies that annoy me is stupidity. It's pretty simple really. Newbies who don't understand the concept of a Help File or Manual. Or even a simple Google search (or in some cases a forum search)

Another thing about newbies I dislike are newbies that think they are the shit. Let's face it: You're not the shit. It's that simple.

Occasionally poor spelling or grammar also annoys me. But usually only if it's combined with either stupidity or a sense of superiority.

Oh yeah, a minor thing about them newbies that also annoys me is semi-spamming newbies. You know the kind that necroposts in a bunch of topics on his/her first couple of days on the forum but doesn't really contribute much to the old topic.

And actually reading the first post now because I don't read posts apparently (That's also something about newbies that annoy me) are those that don't bother to read up on the important stuff. Such as stickied topics that say stuff like "READ THIS FIRST" "IF YOU'RE A NOOB READ THIS FAQ" usually in giant letters of giganticness.

Yeah. Newbies annoy me. However newbies that don't fall into these categories but instead write some posts, perhaps lurk for a while in order to get a feel for the place (perhaps have lurked before registering once he/she reads something that is important enough to post in). I like those. Seriously. But even though I am a grumpy newbie-hater don't be discouraged. I'm sure there are people who can put up with you.

Just don't be a fucking idiot.

In fact those two children over there? They're yours.
Devices besides amnesia can accomplish this unfortunate result.

To be honest my example was to show a character that DIDN'T have amnesia but instead started out with two children without the player having any say in what kind of character he wanted to play.

How do you like your hero?

I'll be honest with you here. I don't mind amnesia at all. It's a simple enough device and it accomplishes multiple goals in one.

Alright so 1) it makes the player character as alien to the world as the player. Thus making it more sensible to have explanations for seemingly obvious things. ("magic, what's that and how does it work?" "you mean we've been at war for the last hundred years? Please tell me more about this 'war'") 2) It doesn't force the player backstory he might not want for his otherwise blank slate character. ("oh yeah you grew up here and here and this and that obnoxious person is actually your best friend and that girl over there. you really, really like her. In fact those two children over there? They're yours")

Your First Game

My first game was The Adventures of Shinan. It was a parody game I think about an adventurer called Shinan and his quest to probably save the world. The demo didn't go very far if I remember correctly (I can't play the game since it requires the rm2k RTP and I don't have that)

The description on the homepage says:
Shinan wakes up after an odd message in his dreams and he is in some odd village where The Old Man Who Knows Everything lives. The Old Man tells him that the dream was a telepathic message and that he is supposed to save the one that sent the message.
And so the epic adventure begins... Except that it wasn't so epic, the girl to rescue is found in the first dungeon and the girl tells them that the message was sent by mistake, to give more problems to everyone the girl's name is Gandalf. After saving the girl they go to a small town and finds an odd guy named Jonas. He tells the heroes that there's an evil tyrant in the far north waiting to be defeated by a couple of heroes, so off they go and maybe the Adventure do begin after all.

Man. I wonder just how much the game sucks. I think it's fortunate I can't play it.

What Makes Stereotypical jRPGs Terrible?

The "j."

Quoted for truth.

Creative people help me out here.

I want my name removed from Samantha because of insurmountable creative differences in the creation of him. (He doesn't have a black shirt. What kind of dork doesn't have a black shirt?)

EDIT: Thank you.

I need quirky classes and spells for each!

You have lumberjack, miner, smith and the village idiot. The rest of the village need to be represented.

Butcher
Farmer (Peasant -> Farmer)
Innkeep
Grave Digger
Merchant (Shopkeep -> Merchant)
Prostitute
Poet (Every village has its poet) (Poet -> Revolutionary, everyone knows all village poets dream of the revolution. And/or the Girl Next Door.)
Chimney Sweep (They sing and use fake British accents)

Skills:
Uninspiring Speech (Poet)
Butcher's Pie (Butcher)
STD (Prostitute)
Rumours (Innkeep, Merchant)
Friends with the Undead (Grave digger)
Beer (Innkeep)
Chim Chim Cher-ee (Chimney Sweep)
Pitchfork & Torch (Farmer)
Shovel (Grave digger)
Rare items (Merchant)
Unfinished Poem (Poet)

How do you like your hero?

I like to pick my own heroes through dialogue choices and actions. (Which usually means the hero is a goodhearted man/woman that helps old ladies cross the street while trying to maintain a tough exterior and failing miserably.)

If I can't pick my own hero then I don't really mind as long as the character is well-written. I almost prefer snarky self-aware characters. The more I laugh the better, though that is probably because any attempts at going serious usually means you'll laugh anyway.

Most of all I want my hero not to be dumb. But good guys usually are. (This is why villains are so much better)

Naming Conventions - Characters, Spells, and More

Shinan has been overused in a number of things I've done. Though since I'm Shinan nowadays I've used him more and more rarely. Though once he was a character that ran around a lot.

I also tend to have a variant of Jake/Jacob/Jack in things I make. The same with Mikhail, Mikael, Michael (but not really Mike for some reason). And Samuel (after Samuel Vimes of Discworld fame, but also after my not-at-all brother Samuli)

For town I oftentimes go with Germanic sounding names. Though also stealing from my own Swedish. Town names that end with Stad/Stadt or Borg/Burg are very common. The same actually with last names. "von Whateverenelleng" or one of my favorite characters ever Edward Düsseldorf :D

And then there's just the creative ways to spell general things. The usual things such as replacing Cs with Ks and using double-wovels. (So Creative could become Kreetev, which is a nice eastern-sounding last name. Though you can go a bit west and make it Kreetef, which reminds me of the Swedish word for Count (greve) so it could be a title... Kreetef Haerluntun of the Society of Arts... Haerluntun was taken from Hurlundun which sounds like something you say when you can't come up with something else. Some letter magic later and it almost sounds like something properly fantasy)

The Ae-letter combination can be used for great effect too.
