From Next Door Review

Thank you so much for the review! It was entertaining to read, haha c:

You bring up some valid points, a lot of which I've either already noticed or have been brought up to me before (that long game over scene for instance, on hindsight I should have made it skippable oops). That one puzzle always gets brought up as well, and it's funny because while some people found it pretty simple, others found it ridiculously hard and it just left me baffled because it was meant to be a straightforward thing which I clearly failed. Either way, it taught me a lesson to be more mindful of the puzzles I put in my games and hopefully I can do better in the future!

I'm curious though, you mention an annoying sound effect in the Audio section... what sound effect are you talking about exactly? I think you might have to be a little more specific, haha

Hi!
Can I make a let's play of this game?

Yes, you can! If you like you can always link it back to me, I love watching Let's Plays, haha

Thank you :D

I just ended playing your game and... it was soooo GOOD! I really enjoyed it although it has really scared me to DEATH! Those "thing's" sounds were sooo creepy, and with headphones were even worse! Anyway, it was a really nice game indeed. Besides I just loved the graphics! Namie is sooo pretty! ^u^

PS: I saw that you are also the dev of "Playground"! I didn't know! I already played the demo and I really can't wait for the complete game!

Thank you so much :D And yes, I'm developing Playground! I need to get my life back together so I can actually finish that game, haha (it's so close though!)

A walkthrough would be greatly appreciated for the endings. There's nothing worse than a multi-ending game with no walkthrough. I gave up after bumbling around after getting two of the four endings. Good game, though, just... a bit annoying not knowing how to see the other endings.

Also, the bug for the side cabinet is still there (that is, checking the left side of the cabinet in the tatami room after you trip on the curb jumps to the ending where you get taken next door).

(Oh and you can use the colour=window for setting the text colour of a post to the same as the background colour of the post window for spoilers. Instead of white.)

I've been debating about whether or not I should have a walkthrough, on one hand it would be nice to players to be able to enjoy all the endings and such, but on the other I don't want to give all the answers away? Welp. Maybe I can have something like less of a walkthrough and more of a list of hints to get all the endings. Hmm... Thank you, though!

The bug's still there? Damn it, I'll have to fix that on another version.

(And well, that does sound like an easier way to hide spoilers... well then!)

(Also I saw that From Next Door is featured on the front page? I don't know who chooses that, but thank you so much!)

Truly the scariest RPG Maker game in a good while, good job!
Loved how the unnatural is slowly, but definitely, attacking the protagonist. Also, despite obviously not needing to develop the characters exaggeratedly, you can still feel attached to the MC.
At last, the 3 ending were very fitting (there are 3, right? the bad, normal and good)

Thank you so much! :D

There are four proper endings! (the good, the best, the bad and the worst!)

From Next Door Review

Thank you so much for the review! Seeing the sound design mentioned makes me happy because I put so much work on that, haha

About the ending,

there were other endings, yes! And not all of them ended up with Namie's demise. There was also a way for you to decide to get the hell out of the house on the last day instead of collecting evidence, although on hindsight I should have made that option easier to get. Oops?

From Next Door Review

You make some interesting points!

About the not going into the house thing - I made the decision to make this game in a way that would emulate the style and feel of Junji Ito's stories (which are fantastic and I recommend them to any horror fan), and that included the non conclusive ending, and the mystery left unexplored and unexplained. This was a deliberate choice for this game in particular, even though I knew it wouldn't please everyone. However, that doesn't mean any future games will be like this! Quite the opposite, actually, as much as I love Junji Ito I also love exploring mysteries and explaining stuff, haha

So I guess what I'm saying is, basically, I get what you're saying! Although this is my first proper game released, it's technically the second (kind of third) in development, and I wanted to try something completely different from what I was doing with my previous game Playground, which is a lot more 'me' and a lot less Junji Ito. So I guess keep an eye out for that? /shameless self promotion

From Next Door Review

Thank you so much for the review (holy crap five stars)!

About the linearity issue,
it was mostly due to time constraints and underestimating how hard it is to do branching choices. Honestly, one of the biggest troubles I had with this game was figuring out all the possible player outcomes and adapting to them, such as being able to find an item to trigger a conversation on different days and keeping the continuity and whatnot. Even some really minor things can take a lot of work welp

Going inside the house seemed like a counter intuitive thing to do with what I was going for, which was doing the story Junji Ito style - it just didn't seem like something that would happen in one of his stories. I do see where you're coming from though! If I wasn't trying for a Junji Ito style I would have probably done something like that (or at least have a less vague ending).

Still, thank you so much!

Good review! I think this game deserves it. ^^

I had also been thinking about putting a review for this but in the end I couldn't do it, mainly because I probably missed "the best ending" you touched in the review...

By the way, I little surprised at how lower place it ranked in the results of the horror jam. (actually it ranked 9th) Although I have not played much of the entries of the jam, I'm believing that this game should have been placed at least a higher position than Lavender (6th), considering the jam has been for horror games. Lavender is wonderful too, though.

And- Oh? Someone is knocking the window and groaning hardly... Weird, as my room is a second floor. Just hold on, I'll check i

I was a little disappointed at the ranking, but oh well :p I didn't have the time to play the other games, though, so I can't really judge.

I know that the lowest rating for the game was for audio (while the average for the other aspects was about 3.5), and I was wondering how people felt about it? Some commented on the lack of background music, though that was intentional on my part, so I was wondering how much that bothers people, mostly out of curiosity c: I do love me some soundtrack, but I decided to experiment with this one and focus on the sound design instead.

Also

well, it looks like someone needs to get a flamethrower :p

Even if I watched a Let's play of this game I must tell you that you made a truly scary game! Holy shit well pulled jumpscares!!
And you can tell right off the bat this game's a lot like Junji Ito's works XD
I can't make a review 'cause I haven't played it myself but I would give it a high score for sure :D

I'm really glad people have been feeling the Junji Ito vibe, I worried that I wouldn't be able to pull it off :p Thank you so much!

Hey :3
I love this game, it's so creepy! But I'm having a problem. I don't know if it's a bug, but seeing what have been said here, maybe it is.
I can't set the monster on fire when I'm in the bathroom, even when I activate the flamethrower.
It's really a bug after all? :/

Thank you! ^^ And yeah, it's a bug :/ I thought I had fixed this for the 1.3 version but apparently not, so maybe for a next version!

5/5 game! (Maybe 4.5) And if you look at the reviews I've done, you'll see that's not a score I give lightly. It had me hooked from start to finish, and with a bit of effort I was able to 100% it. It even left me wanting more. Perfect (or close enough).

Where's the review button so I can write a review of this?

On a side note, you can activate the flamethrower during the credits.

Thank you so much! :D I saw you did find the review button after all, haha.

also okay, I really did not expect that to happen omg

Not sure if this is the right place to submit this, but I can't extract the game due to the "fromnextdoortheme.ogg" file being broken, apparently? Is it working for everyone else?

Well, no one has mentioned anything about it so far so maybe your download was corrupted somehow? Did you try downloading it again? Otherwise you can try downloading the .exe version over here!

author=poopoose
So I got the three endings so far. I think it really needs an walkthrough or something for the players who really want to complete it. I wonder if there would be more detailed ending... though I doubt there would be a "happy" ending in this particular game. ^^;

Spoiler included:
I tried to burn the creature in the bathroom so that its flame wouldn't spread out the other rooms, but that my attempt seemed no work because the creature was unburnable in there somehow. Why, that's insane! And what is that the brand-new nail puller for? It seemed literally useless to me.

Anyway, this game was an awesome horror game. I these days rarely say something is awesome.

For some reason I just don't feel right giving away the answers like that owo But I have given some hints about the game on my blog if anyone is interested, and there are a few let's plays on youtube if anyone is properly stuck somewhere and need some direct instructions c:

Some spoilers below:

The endings are meant to be pretty open ended, though. Mostly because Junji Ito was my inspiration and that's how he does it, haha

When you say you couldn't burn it on the bathroom was it before or after you "activate" the flamethrower? Like when you press A it doesn't work on the bathroom, or...? Because if so that might be a bug and I'll try to fix it for the next updated version that'll fix some other minor issues!

The nail puller, however, is useful at the end if you took a certain route (though it doesn't necessarily affect the ending itself). On hindsight I should have made it a little more useful, but yeah if you didn't you use it, it's because you went about something in a different way!

Anyway, thank you so much! ^^

Hello!
I can have your permission for translate this game for Portuguese?
Thanks!

I'm actually surprised at how many people have asked me permission to translate my games to Portuguese, and what makes it funnier is that Portuguese is actually my first language :p Português brasileiro, digo.

I already had someone else ask me to translate From Next Door to Portuguese but there's nothing concrete yet so we can talk about it via PM! Se quiser pode ser até em português mesmo, haha.

i completed the game n it was relatively interesting though i have some qualms about it! i loved the graphics. may i ask how many endings there are? so far ive gotten like two i think

I was debating with myself on whether or not I should say how many endings there are, but I guess I can say how many (but probably not how to get them bwahaha)

There are
4 endings + the bad end!

author=TrashWaifu
You had me at "Junji Ito". The boring part of me wishes there was an option to leave the boards up lol.

Maybe I should have made an ending where you choose to not remove the boards and nothing ever happens, the end. Or would it?? :p
