X-Noir Review

Thanks for the review Sol. I found it pretty on point. Despite its many shortcomings, I like the world and characters that X-Noir spawned and would be interested in a potential sequel or even remake where we address many of the story/gameplay issues. A game like this would definitely have been better suited to the adventure/puzzle game genre (Phoenix Wright, Professor Layton).

I think we could have done a better job hinting at some of the plot points earlier in the game. Like with most of our games, while we had the ending already in mind, we weren't sure how we were going to get there. I almost feel like our games are first drafts. If we went back and remade them (like the Motw remake we're talking about) we'd have a strong foundation to work with and be able to tell a stronger story overall since we know the major plot points we need to hit.

I'm glad you enjoyed it overall. A 3.5 is probably higher than I'd have given it. I always enjoy reading your reviews since you just focus on the parts you find most interesting (the characters/story typically ) and gloss over the other stuff that is inoffensive. It certainly makes for more indepth reviews that we don't usually get. I hope you'll continue to follow our work in the future. :)

World Remade Review

Thanks for the very detailed review benny. I'm sure readers will appreciate all the added insights from our skype discussions.

I agree with most of the sentiments of the review. We mostly used the contest as a springboard for the project. There was a lot of focus on scoping out the game which is why the contest entry feels more like an introductory section and less like a complete game. In that way the story and gameplay definitely suffered. We've gotten a lot of good insight though and have made some changes to improve the pacing.

For the time being this project is on hiatus. Volrath and I have been preoccupied with other work but I'm sure you'll be seeing something from us before too long.

Outlaw City Review

Solid review. I hope more people check out this game now. I remember playing it when it first came out and thinking it had one of the most rich battle systems at the time.

In Search of Freedom Review

I used the poison shard too on the tree boss. It unfortunately destroyed Olga's monster skills right away so I wasn't able to use them at all in the battle. Very challenging but fun.

After you tested, I not only added the catching block on the left side, but also a top block that eliminated the one part of the puzzle in which interaction between the two was REQUIRED, since it made that final part more difficult, and someone got stuck there while testing.

Ah I was wondering about that. I thought the minigame was a great metaphor for how you can only reach certain emotional heights with another person you love. But then I realized you could clear the puzzle without interacting with the other person which sort of lessened the impact.

Great review! I was going to write up something too but this basically summed up most of my feelings.

One thing that could have made the game even more frustrating would have been setting very tight time limit to solve each puzzle.

Speaking of that I have another game on here that featured only the No Left Turn mazes in a space setting : http://rpgmaker.net/games/5031/. It originally had a timer that counted down, but players found it added an unnecessary level of frustration. I changed it to count up instead so players could try to beat their best times. I didn't feel having a timer would be appropriate for an immersive game like Labyrinthine Dreams.

Thanks for the feedback CC. I'm looking forward to seeing your playthrough footage.

I suggest always having more than one correct way to solve a puzzle. I said this in my playthrough, but the last maze involved my character repeating the same rather slow method over and over again; tweaking only the last several moves - knowing that was the only way to victory.

I think this really depends on the puzzle. If you look at most published puzzles like Sudoku for example there is usually only solution unless otherwise stated. I think with some types of puzzles it's more satisfying to find that one solution that the designer intended.

The puzzles in LD typically have an optimal path although there can be multiple ways to reach it. If the sky maze though had multiple solutions then it would change the entire meaning of that puzzle. For some of the puzzles it was intentional there was only one correct path from a design and storytelling perspective.

I could see how repeating the same pattern over and over though can get frustrating. Although it also can be satisfying once you figure out that last part and triumph over the beast!

Anyway glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks for the feedback guys! I actually just bought a book today on logic mazes and it has all the solutions in the back of the book. I could just have the solutions available somewhere for when the player gets stuck. Something to think about if I revisit this game type.

Glad you got the reference. I couldn't resist.

I'd definitely recommend trying it.
