hmm, should I include this torrid lesbian romance in my game even though it's not *strictly* necessary to the plot?

If nothing else, it could be a side quest or something :D

I mean why wouldn't you?
Nothing unusual about a romantic subplot. If you think it'll add something to the experience, go right ahead.
people include straight romance stuff all the time even when "not needed", guess what im trying to say is this probably shouldn't be given too much thought if straight shit never gets called out ever
I'd probably be more likely to play it if you did so!

You'd think MZ would use a dictionary for switches/variables by now?

short answer: ye s
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

If you can get away with not adding something to your game, then don't add it. If when you get done, it feels incomplete without it, then go back and add it. But don't just add every damn thing that seems neat at the time. Get a completely playable game first, and then figure out what unnecessary extra stuff really truly fits this game.

Kill your darlings.

Word. Tonally, it is very different from the rest of the game. It's about women from two different worlds. One of them is a soldier, and she is from the rest of the game, but the other woman is a privileged haughty socialite who comes from a background of unthinkable stupid wealth. The setting favors the latter's social circles, whereas THE ENTIRE GAME is a war story about being a soldier and shooting stuff and blowing shit up to SAVE 'MERICA (FUCK YEAH). Also the socialite is connected to the plot only by the fact that she's the President's sister, but as you're* trying to save 'Merica by killing the President (fuck?...yeah?? fuckyeah?) (HELLO 2076 AS SEEN FROM 2019) that is kind of a thing.

If it doesn't go in rpgmaker I might write it as prose and see who wants to buy it. The romance part, I mean.

@Darkness: actually yeah, for once it's not the gay that's the issue, it's the romance. at a surface level, my game is going to look a lot like some bastard offspring of "call of duty" and "final fantasy", in any case it's mostly going to be about running around shooting people and blowing up robots to save 'merica (FUCK YEAH) and it does just so happen that you're a queer woman but anyway I was thinking this might be a "kill your darlings thing" cause having a level where you go on a date would be kind of weir--

Fuck. Nevermind. Ignore everything I'm saying it's COMPLETELY WRONG...jesus I was stoned, did I type "@Darkness?"

@Darken: THERE WE GO. No, I was completely wrong, people go on dates in Final Fantasy all the goddamn time. It's like a third of what you do in some Final Fantasy games (sometimes with the other third being the collectible card game and the actual game only being the third third, but I digress). Oh, but that dating is always gameified really hard...oh man, I don't know if I'm up for that, I've never done that kind of gameplay before. Ah, fuck it! Why not.

Well great, now I need to find some very slightly naughty graphics : P

Everyone else I appreciate your appreciation of my appreciation of sapphic romance & mutual onanism. WORDS, biatch.

Edite:

* That is to say, this is the goal of the players and the main party. While FNG (the soldier in question, who is a deuteragonist but also the only player named character in the game, so I just refer to her as FNG ("Fucking New Guy") for short since the game starts with her first day on the job) is actually trying to well...kill the main party.

I'm just gonna say, if there's a way to include smoochin in a game, I'm all for it.

In fact, make the smoochin the main plot. The only thing more interesting than smoochin is dogs, unless it's dogs smoochin.

Rewrite your game to be about dogs in love, is what I'm saying
Did that one already, nobody played it. (okay, the dogs aren't explicitly in any kind of romantic love, that would be a bit weird for me and also they're all FFI style ciphers, but they all have mad platonic love for each other, and you can literally configure your party so that all your members can give each other poochy smoochies til the cows come home, so pretty close, and probably the closest you can get to "dogs smoochin: the game").

(If Smith & Wesson made brooms, they'd be marketed as "tactical" brooms with the Smith & Wesson logo on them and cost 2-3x as much as normal brooms. I know because I've owned some Smith & Wesson knives and other nongun products from them.)

Clearly the romance was the important element
Sometimes you need something a bit different as a break from overcompressed story. If you're always on the rails, so to speak, you can get tired of them. So a small side-quest or story, or some minigames or just something to break up the doom and gloom and lighten things up can work out really well.

It can also work as a stark contrast aspect, artistically and tonally. You have the ritzy daughter of a stupidly rich family, having to deal with the reality of her girlfriend who is not as lucky but who is a lot more danger. Then there's the poltical worry side of things with the main character dating someone important and how that works with the war. Throw in some cute bits with them to give a bit of fluff and add depth to their relationship and you have something that would fit well, give the players a break from the constant tragedy and kickass, and a reason to 'come home', etc. Things you can play off story-wise, too, if you want to add more drama (oh no, she's expected to be going on a date with a respectable match for her position. oh no, mc has gone missing in the field what will gf do now that her family are pressuring her to move on. oh no, they wanted to meet before the big ending battle but it didn't manage to happen will gf still be alive after. oh no they had a fight due to the stress of everything going on in their lives will their romance survive.)

I don't see why it shouldn't fit, tonally, to the story if tweaked to be included as an essential part instead of just an add-on, is what i'm trying to say, I guess.

Final Fantasy games are AAA games that have to have tonal shifts and variety in order to appeal to a mass audience. Indie games have the ability to be better. You can focus on a specific thing instead of throwing every damn thing you want to do all into a single game.

Not to say you shouldn't make the romance plot. But consider making it as a separate game.
