rm2k3 Attack Algorithm

As everyone who has used the system for more than a few minutes knows, the algorithms for determining attack power in rm2k3 are laughably terrible. In an attempt to avoid making a CBS (or worse yet, using a different engine), I've decided to handle all the in-battle algorithms myself.

Is this a passable replacement for the attack algorithms, provided I want the damage to have very little variability?

(Attacker's strength + weapon strength + attacker's level + random 1-3) - (Defender's defense / 4)

Using this formula, I'm going to be keeping the average enemy's defense a bit lower than where melee fighters' attack power should be.

Also, hello to everyone who's still here from before my year-long hiatus and still remembers me.

Let's Play!

Me and my friend were trying to find something productive to do the other night, but instead we decided to LP one of our REALLY old games. Quite possibly one of the worst RPG Maker games I've ever seen.

We mostly did it for our own personal lulz, and we know we're not all that funny or entertaining, but I figured I'd share anyway. We also have an LP of The Way going on, but updates on that are sporadic.. :\ We'd like to start a series of LPs of both console and RPG Maker games, so any feedback would be appreciated. Hell, even if you want to flame us, go for it.

And now I reveal... MY FINAL FORM! HAHAHA!

It's such an obvious trope that it almost always shows up in RPGs, and even other genres of games. You just know that when you take down the big bad and everyone's standing around congratulating themselves, you're about to be sucked into another battle if you're lucky, another six or more if you're not. What's your take on multi-formed final bosses?

Personally, I like them. I think it can help make an ending seem more climactic, when used right. Though I think it's very easy to do it wrong. For example:

Final Fantasy VI did it right. A progression of somewhat difficult bosses before facing off with Kefka's final form. It flowed, each form was visually interesting, and it served to show how powerful Kefka had gotten.

Final Fantasy X did it wrong. We have a really good battle with Braska's Final Aeon, followed by an even more intense rematch. If they had ended it there, that would have been fine. Instead we get a boring, slow, and LOOOOOOOONG sequence of killing off your various aeons (have fun if your accuracy stat isn't the best) followed by an impossible to lose final boss against a flying headcrab. The whole thing comes across as if they had some extra disc space and decided to just fill it up with a last minute boss marathon.

So anyway, thoughts?

Game Pet Peeves

Post your pet peeves when it comes to making RPG Maker games or playing other peoples'. Try not to start any flame wars.

My personal pet peeves would be when there's only one tile that teleports you to the next map and you have to spend twenty seconds combing the bottom of the map for it, and when an RPG Maker game expects you to install the game, rather than just download it and click the "Play game" button. You're already lucky I'm wasting my time and disk space for your most likely shitty game, the least you could do is make it easy to delete when I inevitably decide it ain't worth my time.

Also, anything under the default walking speed in rm2k/3 is absolutely unacceptable unless it's only for small portions of gameplay. Nothing kills any hope for a game faster than starting it up and walking slower than an fat lady on a Segway

Theoretical "Contest"

On another topic, a certain video game name generator was mentioned and it game me an idea for a "contest" of sorts. Nothing serious, just some fun.

I've randomized 40 names for a game. What I'm thinking is that you'll give me a number between 1 and 40, and I'll give you the corresponding name, and from that, you have to make a game (whatever maker you want to use, I don't really give a rat's ass). The games don't have to be long, and if you don't like your name, you can draw again (within reason, two or three redo's tops)

Before I think about deadlines and judges or anything, I just want to know if anyone would be interested in this sort of thing.

Submission

Okay, my game's been in limbo for five days now... just wondering, but how long does it usually take a game to be approved?

Shameless self-promotion :D

Figured this'd be the best place to put a link to my YouTube channel since most of what I do there is video Let's Plays. Sorry if this is a no-go around here, if so, just lock this.

Hey there

Some of you (okay, just Lennon) may remember me as arcanedude34 from GW. I moved over here on Lennon's suggestion, so... yeah. I probably won't spend much time here on the forums, but who knows? Maybe I will.
