@Gourd_Clae No, it doesn't have to be satisfying - almost satisfying is fine, just not unsatisfying, that's all.
To clarify, you're talking about endings that aren't very happy, don't exactly tie up the loose ends, but nevertheless leave you content?
THX1138 had one of these endings. So did La Femme Nikita.
Yes but you said unsatisfying end, as in a letdown, Mass Effect 3, etc.
Just easily make an ending where Mel Gibson or something was behind it all this time.
The bad guy was actually a woman in transition doing all this evil shit due to hormone therapy?
Easy to come up with an unsatisfying ending.
Edit: Wait I just re-read your topic title lol. A satisfying ending would be just tying up loose ends as well as the main fiction nicely. If this reason is why the main character is doing what he's doing than resolve that. If the bad guys plan or whatever is still possible even if he dies just heroic sacrifice or something?

Guys, he said "non-unsatisfying ending". Take out the double-negative, and read "satisfying ending".
*Edit: Though, later on, he says, that it doesn't have to be "satisfying", just "not unsatisfying". Whatever that means. I guess an ending where players can go "Oh. So that's what was happening. Okay." (or like reaction) would be fine?
