Yes, making a game from scratch without any external sprites/scripts is a good idea.

The best way to get into making your own assets is to study other sprite styles and gradually pull away from it until you find a style that you can call your own. It doesn't happen overnight, so be willing to let yourself learn. Heck, I learned pixel art with Dragon Quest edits and frankensprites, which led to making my own.

Unless you're in a rush to make some big commercial game, in which case maybe hire someone or buy an asset pack.

I learned from doing that with Sailor Moon sprites for goofy OC play by email roleplays.

Ah, my misspent youth...

Anyway making the art stuff from scratch is most of the reason I'm into gam mak right now. Gotta rely on other people's scripting, tho. I can't code to save my life, lol.
