Kobra's Realm/Corner creator arrested for hacking

This news just stuns me. In fact, when I first heard about it, I wondered "Is this the same Kobra that runs Kobra's Realm?" Turns out it was.

Basically, Kobra got into trouble with the law for hacking the Tampa Bay Infragard website, posted about doing it, and then 15 other people proceeded to do the same.

This state is really embarrassing, although in this case, it could happen anywhere. As for Kobra himself, I imagine there will be plenty of free time to make RPG Maker 2003 and XP games behind bars (although he's only under regional arrest- free but only in a certain area, it's possible he could get up to FIVE YEARS).

Time for a little break.

Right now, in light of the many recent developments here, I feel like it's time to take a little break. I'll still post blogs/updates and be there to chat on IRC, of course. I'm hoping this storm of negativity passes soon.

It shouldn't be more than a month or so, anyway.

Just thought I'd try to change things up here a little bit, because I was going to make a topic focusing on the latest releases as well as some games that have been swept under the carpet, or at least seem like they were, but then I remembered that there already is a topic here like that!

Hottest game: Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis You might even argue this point for all of 2010.

With over a thousand downloads in just two weeks, Alter A.I.L.A. Genesis is putting up better numbers than some of the more obscure commercial games, and it's not hard to see why.

It does have its Guide-Dang-It moments, particularly later in the game. But overall, AAG is a solid RPG that, were it not for RM2k3's faults (and there are many), it would be just about perfect. Platforming is difficult to pull off in RM2k3, but Neok did quite well. You do have to run to jump, which means you may risk getting the enemies' attention, but at least jumps are automatic. Be sure to give this one a try if you haven't already.

We go from a non-traditional platforming RPG to a traditional, old school type RPG.
Okay... 700 years ago, the world of man was a place of peace. People lived their lives without fear, and mankind flourished. It didn't last. A great evil emerged, and laid waste to civilization. Also the main character is sixteen.

Uh-oh. This game sounds pretty dire, doesn't it. Well, maybe what it loses in story it can gain in gameplay. And, thankfully, it does... if you're into Dragon Quest type games, complete with saving only at churches, similar graphics, and its sound effects. Otherwise, you may want to give this one a pass. It isn't for everyone, but it is an average to slightly-above average RPG.

Apparently, this is a very early demo of a turn based strategy game. arikispencer wants to make it better than Fire Emblem, but from the very few screenshots available (only six!), it looks like it's going to be a lot of work for him. The screenshots lack variety, and are VERY empty, as well, but again, this is still very early.

Okay, the title is in ALL CAPS and has accompanying exclamation points, the game is in RTP, and the mapping is pretty dire. However, it does have some custom graphics. I have to wonder why AmuroC destroyed the original line art with one of the characters, though.

It's supposed to be a comedy type game, but I don't see what's so funny. Also, there are only eight screens total, only six are unique. The Game Over screen is pretty much a palette swap-type thing of the title screen. Also, Hiro is the hero (very unoriginal), and is the son of Dante (meaning Hiro is probably seventeen or younger... sigh) who seems to want to destroy everything he once tried to save.

It is a very early demo, however, so there's still plenty of time to polish this game up. At the very least, AmuroC is trying a different battle system, so watch this game!

I haven't played it, nor heard from anyone that has, as a hint to anyone viewing this list. What I will say is there are only five screens to judge from, and one of those is the title screen. Either this is a really short demo, or the author is trying to hide it from us, which is unfortunate. And if the blog is any indication, you only start with one ability per character. Give us more! Also the main character is sixteen.

The way the mapping looks, you'd think it was yet another traditional RPG. Actually, the game doesn't even seem to know what it wants to be! At least Crost isn't another teenage hero from some farming village, but he does have some rather... odd company. A cross-dressing effeminate male, Chryson, a maid that hates work, Ayna, and a swordsman with serious issues, Stain. Okay, maybe not THAT weird for an RPG, but it gets weirder.

Let's discuss Final Fantasy III. You know, the one that was released in Japan in 1990, and released on the Nintendo DS in 2006. The one with four kids in some cave, finding crystals to get jobs, and on some weird flying continent that makes me wonder why the water on it never fell off to the world below.

I downloaded it, and couldn't get it to work because the file contained "invalid information". Sorry.

It has an impressive developer pedigree, right? So the game can't possibly go wrong, right? Well... you'd be wrong. Your character, Selim Shirazi, is aboard the space station Vestel. You wander the station for a good 40 minutes trying to figure out what is going on, finding out a little bit at a time. Suffice it to say that the show's over when things get interesting. Sorry again.

Action Game Maker delayed

:( Action Game Maker has been delayed from December 12, 2008 to March 5, 2009 in Japan. Enterbrain cites the delay is to improve the engine to compete with similar products (hello Stencyl and Game Maker?)

So, now we have to wait until Spring to make an Action Game Maker game. Sigh.

Paladin's Q- er, Lennus-II

Lennus-II was released in Japan in July 1996 and was only recently translated to English.

Lennus-II is so underrated, it isn't even funny. In fact, the whole Lennus series is underrated. Lennus-II fixes many of the problems the original, Paladin's Quest, had:

-You can now save anywhere.
-It is much easier to tell what Spirits you get. They show up as icons when you defeat an enemy.
-Translation is MUCH better.
-No more ridiculous item/spell abbreviations! No more "Sft Rb" or "S sweat"

However, Lennus-II DOES have the same type of graphics. The otherworldly pastel colors make a return, though as of yet, they seem a bit darker. You also still use HP for spells (remember, there's no MP in the Lennus series)

VW's Mid-Week Game

I've noticed lately, that ever since I finished coursework, that the middle of the week has been decidedly lacking in activities. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday are just BORING.

Nothing much going on, and I'm almost always off from work at least one of those days. Everyone else is busy. So, I'm using this time to make a VX RPG!

It is VW's Mid-Week Game (Title TBD)
Every Thursday night, a new installment in the Mid-Week Game should be uploaded here at RMN. I want to see just how far I can go.

Characters:
Ninetyfive- A green-haired paladin that got a scar near his right eye from an accident with a sword at Southpole Castle. He is twenty-five years of age, and wields a mean spear.

Ninetyeight- A mysterious man behind a mask. Not much is known about him. Probably at least forty to fifty years of age based on appearance.

Twokay- An energetic twenty-two year old lady, she is trying to cross to the Sandia Continent but can't because the bridge is closed.

2K3- A dark and strange man. He prefers to take his opponents from the side. Is roughly thirty years old.

X Pete "or Peter of the Cross"- A holy knight twenty-nine years of age, X Pete is looking for a worthy opponent in the middle of a vast forest, in a small village.

V. X.- A nineteen year old woman that only goes by her initials. She's believed to be called Viola Xavier, but she hates that name.

There are still two other characters to be revealed in the game itself.


Setting: A simple, down-to-earth RPG. Not trying to be the next Final Fantasy here.

MID-WEEK ONE PROGRESS
Tuesday, May 13- working on Mid-Week Game. I made the world map and added information about the characters.
Wednesday, May 14- Posted first screenshot of Mid-Week Game.
Thursday, May 15- Set world map areas. The overworld music also varies by region. I also posted the last two screenshots of Mid-Week One, as well as the demo. See you Tuesday!

MID-WEEK TWO PROGRESS
Tuesday, May 20- fixed the overworld music bug, as well as the snowman issue.
Wednesday, May 21- Added Icicle Cavern map and most events, and added the Southpole Castle interior and events. Also added some events for objects that can be reached by CTRL. Try it with the guards, but save if you try it with anything else.
Thursday, May 22- Getting it all ready for release and released it. See you Tuesday!

MID-WEEK THREE PROGRESS (NOTE: Wed through Fri this week ONLY! Due to Memorial Day)
Wednesday, May 28- The start of Mid-Week Three.
Thursday, May 29- Something should happen.
Friday, May 30- The release of Mid-Week Three.
