Need help recovering lost content

Hello everyone, something has been bothering me for an extremely long time. This in particular has to deal with a wealth of unused/scrapped content from the Sega Genesis classic; Monster World 4. This image includes 20 sheets that include things such as...

  • Unused NPCs(LOTS of them)

  • Items

  • An entire playable character(Asha's male equivalent)

  • Objects

  • Attack effects

  • Frames of NPCs who used to walk, but now just stand still

  • A dark version of the queen

The sheet is below and can also be found here...

Monster World IV Lost Sheet

The name of the developer who is responsible for these as well as Asha's design is Maki Ohzora. I'm not sure what is the best way to go about getting these since these will never be used for anything or by anyone anytime soon. This would be a dream come true if I were able to get my hands on these in pixel perfect format.

If we are unable to contact her and/or find something that can clean these up, the last resort will be having to create or recreate them myself. Is there anyone who'd be willing to help me out with this? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Need help with story structure

Hello everyone, there has been something I've been wanting to discuss regarding a project I'm working on and its been bugging me for days on end. At this point in time, the mapping and mechanics are all pretty much deep in development and many of them are complete. However, the story structure has been bothering me a whole lot because I feel many parts of them would ruin the experience altogether.

The game itself is a crossover in which one of the characters gets lost in a completely different world. The vision I had throughout the years called for that character to cross over to this world only and go home at the ending similar to the structure of the Wizard of Oz or others of its kind. A story that revolves around going to unfamiliar territory, meeting lots of new people, and finally returning to where it all began.

But lately, there have been certain circumstances(not going into detail) and ideas tainting the vision I originally had and turning it into something unnecessary. The game being designed pretty much has all the resources needed to make a variety of stages and content with one world alone. There isn't a need for two ice areas and two water areas and two desert areas and so on. It would just become redundant(at least in my opinion). It seemed like a good idea at first, but the deeper the game went into development, the more I realized, it wasn't.

What story structure do you think would be the most fitting for something like this? One world with a large variety of different areas or both worlds with similar kinds of areas?

RMN and ESRB

Hey everyone, just had a quick thought in my mind about something. I've been searching through the game list on RMN lately for some new content to dig into, and through scrolling and seeing the various titles,it got me wondering...is it possible to add an ESRB rating system in the "Details" section of your game page some day in the distant future? I'm not going to speak of the game that got me wondering on this, however.

I know its not really necessary, as it is simply extra fluff, but I was thinking it would be cool to add ESRB ratings on games. We pretty much get new stuff all the time and lots of titles means lots of possibilities for content. While we do get "Genre" and "Flavors" in our game pages, one thing we don't know is age audience.

Since this is a free site with people of all ages developing and posting games together, that means that anyone of any age can access all content without knowing what kind of content they're getting into. Does the game have mild language, partial nudity, sexual themes, blood and gore, etc?

Again, this is something that should be taken with a grain of salt as I know it is just a thought; not something that will happen or anything of the sort.

Remakes Galore!

Lately, I've been wondering about the status of games such as the Final Fantasy 7 remake, and from what I've heard, its good news. But...I was not expecting Square Enix to hit us with another remake bombshell...That's right folks! A Secret of Mana remake! I'm blown away! This was the very first game me and my brother purchased on the Wii Virtual Console back in like 2010. Man, its been ages.

So this topic is just for fun, but I would like everyone to name their top 5 dream games they wish would be remade. Even if your dream remakes are far from reality, it doesn't matter, just get them out there. These remakes could be because the game was bad, or the game was really good. For example, I've always wondered what a Quest 64 remake would be like XD.

MY TOP 5(Random Order)
  • Skies of Arcadia
  • Final Fantasy 6
  • Legend of Dragoon
  • Phantasy Star 4
  • Chrono Trigger

For a secret runner up, I would have added Zelda:Link's Awakening

Lufia 3 Remake:I need some guidance

Hello everyone, something has been on my mind a lot lately, and I think this is beginning to become something I seriously want to do, but will need some work and some help.

Before I begin, I'd like to say that Lufia 3 was the very 1st hand-held RPG I ever owned outside of Pokemon Blue. I was about 15 years old and I came late in the game with the whole RPG-Craze. I picked up a gem at a local Game Stop called Lufia:The Legend Returns. Of course, it was brand new and looked like this.

At the time, they still sold Game Boy games at their stores, but they don't anymore. Luckily, I picked it up right before they started practically giving game boy games away.

I played the game and heavily enjoyed it and after all these years, I still find myself coming back to it sometimes. Since then, its been in my heart to do a remake of sorts for it. However, with RPG Maker's limits on a few aspects, the game would have to be stripped down to an extent. But, I'll need some help with a few things and I have some questions.

Is there software that can rip Game Boy Color music and SFX?
There are some people that have some magnificent remixes of Lufia 3 music on Youtube, but a HUGE chunk of the OST hasn't been remixed to this day. That bothers me. As old as the game is, lots of the music hasn't been touched on at all. I was thinking of asking this composer who already has a great chunk of the OST remixed, but this was ages ago. I don't know if he/she will respond.

By ripping, I mean getting the game's OST in MIDI format so they can be remixed or orchestrated in some way. I've found software that can rip Game Boy Advance music, but none with GB/GBC. Surely, I'm missing out on something here? Does anyone know of software that can do this?

Are any RPG Maker engines capable of making a 9 character battle system?
Lufia 3 had a very fun, unique, and experimental battle system. With it, up to 9 characters could be present in a battle. However, you could control how many members are in combat regardless of how many members you had. It was perfect for those who want to challenge yourselves. That said, only 3 characters could attack per turn(1 from each column),however, if your front-line party members fall, the game is over. The only thing is, all battles take place on a white background :/

So if no engines are capable of this, I'll simply just go for the 4 member battle system as seen in Lufia 2.

Monster Ripping/Remakes
Like any good RPG, Lufia 3 has a large bestiary and its rare to see the same monster twice once you've moved on in the storyline. Its too bad I hadn't thought of ripping them while I was playing through it before this. Maybe there is a website that has them all?

Edit: I Found it!! RPG Classic Lufia 3

Lufia 3's World
Lufia 3 has a large world for a Game Boy RPG. It has a whopping 4 continents with their own struggles and party members to gain. There are 16 towns and 23 dungeons. 9 times out of 10, each town had its own theme; all of which are very catchy and sometimes calming. Since the World Map itself isn't very large, it wouldn't be hard nor time-consuming to make a map that looks like this(1 of 4 continents).

The Characters
Similar to games like Final Fantasy 6, Lufia 3 has a very wide and diverse cast. With a total of 12 playable characters and 1 secret one, this game brings in the biggest cast the Lufia series has ever had.

Ending/Possible Sequel/Bonus Content:WARNING! CONTAINS SPOLIERS! WATCH AT YOUR OWN RISK
With this remake I'm thinking of, I was wondering what the bonus content would be. When the game ends, there is a hint of an aftermath after the main game. The characters speak of an unexplored continent known as Estoland where Doom Island fell. Since this is chronologically the last game in the series, there would have to be some work done in the story to make this aftermath fun.

Graphical Overhaul/Redo
Lufia 3 easily has some of the most beautiful graphics on the Game Boy Color and while they were good for the system, for this remake I'd like to use assets from Lufia 1&2. But, some assets Would have to be recolored or edited in some fashion.

Not only that but character map and battle animations would have to be done from original or edited sprites as well. After looking through the tilesets of Lufia 2, I'd say that a LOT of the game can be done simply on these. Also, with the battle sprites, there will no longer be a need for the white background in battle. We can use those lush Lufia 2 backgrounds.

Basically, I want the game to look more like this

Instead of this

Dungeon Design
Lufia 3 had an automatically generated dungeon aesthetic and while fun at first, it can get boring later on. In this remake, each dungeon would be designed manually and with meaning like the first 2 entries.

The Verdict
So, If I begin making this project, will there be anyone who'd be willing to sign up for a position if need be? This has been something the fans and I have been wanting to see for years as there is big talk about doing it, but no attempts have been taken. Why not let us be the first? If there are any questions, concerns, ideas,or anything of the sort, let it be heard! Thank you:)

Also, for those who haven't played it yet, it got released on the 3DS E-Shop some time ago. You should check it out! A good 4-minute review is also here...

Development Methods:Which ones are your favorites?

Hello everyone, been in deep thought about something lately. Throughout the development of our projects, we all have developed methods, techniques, and habits for better or worse. For most, we don't begin very organized, but as time goes on and our projects get bigger and better, we develop a sense of organization that just seems to stick with you.

With the usage of our favorite programs, things can get pretty messy in our databases. Variables start small, but then we end up getting hundreds of them, switches seem to be no big deal until you realize that you're making your thousandth one. Objects and events are scattered everywhere like someone just dropped a whole bag of skittles on the floor. You code in something that seems to create problems elsewhere and you are ready to pull your hair out over something that was as simple as a variable fix.

What are some methods you have developed that have proven successful and allow you to create your projects with maximum speed and organization? You don't have to have completed a game to respond in this topic because we all have developed a skill that's smart in one way or another. However, if you have completed a game as well, your knowledge and advice would be a golden addition.

What methods can you pass on to new and older developers to guide them in the right direction? What would you avoid doing and what mistakes have you made that you would warn other developers to look out for?

Concern: Is my project difficult to understand?

Hello everyone, I have a serious question and its recently been bothering me. Is my project difficult to understand?

Recently I came across a video seeing how an ordinary person would come across playing it and was a bit dumbfounded on why people fail at learning how to play something instead of diving in expecting to know what to do and getting yourself killed.

When this topic was made, everyone had some great pointers on difficulty in several areas. They suggested lots of good stuff to the user and gave lots of possibilities. However, I'm not sure how much clearer I could make my project. I've included a Manual that teaches you about most of the game up to this point and also included a controls viewer in the game. How much lower should I go? Make a "No Damage" Mode for players?

People today complain about games including Tutorials for you, but now I realize, those should be a requirement because some people need to have tutorials fed to them. Of course optional tutorials are always the best. Now, the video I'm about to show you is one of recent. I've already picked out everything I believe should be addressed, but I'd like to hear what you guys have in mind or would like to say as well.

Feedback is what curves out every developers' road to success even if it was in a comedic matter or a serious one. If you have played the recent demo, were there any issues in any category you would like to address? Thank you:)

Content: Remake Versus Re-Imagining

Hello once again fellow developers and staff. I have a question. What do you all think of innovating something over simply putting on a fresh coat of paint? As we all know, there is a huge difference between a remake and a re-imagining. One of the best examples I can think of is Lufia: Curse of the Sinistrals. This was a complete re-imagining compared to the original. Most content like story and music is the same, but all else is overhauled.

Lately, I have been working out a story design document for my project, and since it blends several time periods and worlds across the franchises' history along with brand new ones, I have been thinking about giving some key areas that already exist a complete re-imagining over just repainting them.

The problem is, the Monster World chronology was never really dug into nor is it explained in detail, meaning I have to develop the gaps of the chronology myself through clues found throughout the games.

In Wonder Boy in Monster Land(SMS and Arcade), there were towns and cities that were good at the time, but would otherwise seem bland by today's standards. I was thinking about giving a complete overhaul to older areas so that it feels like something totally new. However, the struggle between staying true to the original designs or making them better hit me.

For example, a town in Wonder Boy in Monster Land looked like this...

But, it could look something like this, of course with new layouts, people, and a story to them. One area is a floating city called Tonnovia, but I want to change that story completely into a floating continent in order to further develop the story as needed.

Is it truly okay to completely derail the old, underdeveloped concepts and develop new ones to make it fresh and interesting?

What is magic? What does it mean? How does it work?

Hello RMN, I have been in deep thought about this and thought it was best to ask everyone this. What is magic to you? What does it mean? How does it work? No, I don't mean the stuff that you toss at your foes in games and stuff, but as an experience.

In RPGs, stories are very important regardless of what type of RPG it is. The characters and story have to blend well, otherwise it was all for naught. Is magic something that is unforgettable? Something that will remain in your heart for as long as you live and beyond? Is magic emotion? Does it have realism to relate to the real world? What are some key essentials to creating a magical experience without over complicating the plot?

It doesn't exactly have to be in an RPG, but what experiences have been magical to you? Some say, Disney, Nintendo, Square Enix, Studio Ghibli, and several others are the best places to search for it, but how exactly do you achieve it? I've played most Final Fantasy games, watched most Disney classics, and watched a majority of Studio Ghibli's films, yet the definition of "magic" is something that is hard to pull off without time.

The reason why I'm asking is because, I am starting to create the story for my project now that I know everything there is to know about the series. It took years of research and playthroughs of every game(sometimes several times) to find out everything about everything; the characters, the storyline, the chronology, the music, all of it. But, now that its time to put the story together, its a lot harder than I thought.

The game play or mapping isn't the problem, but since the story combines the whole chronology into one as well as adding a new one, bringing everyone together and figuring out how they meet is challenging. It would be a shame if the game was ruined by a story that doesn't fit the characters or atmosphere.I would greatly appreciate any help on this.

Its thanks to everyone that the game has made it this far, perhaps this will push even further.

Project Lufia: Shifting Gears

Hello everyone, I have a request for something that has been bothering me for a while and I feel like Its something that has to be done sooner or later. First off, I would like to say that I used to have a Lufia game project that was going rather well for a time. However, a cataclysmic event happened where my flash drive corrupted and took all of my hard work with it.

Its been in the air lately, but how many of you would be interested in a Lufia 3 remake? Lately we've seen lots of Lufia fan games here and they all seem to be going well. My original project was Lufia VI:Echoes of the Legend, but since all my resources were lost, Its best to start over in another or a greater path.

The idea is to remake Lufia 3 from the ground up with edited Lufia 2 materials and even some original tiles and graphics. Over YouTube, I have found great and Godly remixes of some of the songs and as the first RPG I've ever played, I believe it deserves some justice. Seriously, just listen to the normal battle theme...

Would anyone be interested in seeing a complete remake of this Game Boy Color classic?
