For reference, old map:

The old map was 200x135. This map got chopped down by a good chunk lengthwise. This map is meant to be big as you don't visit a good portion of it (as you can see) and you traverse the area mainly through the caves (the caves are pretty short themselves). The wrong path leads to treasures, while the right path leads to the exit (of course). I tried to utilize just about everything on the current chipset I have, but I can't do much about elevation with the current chipset sadly. This is the best I can really do on this front, but I think it's a lot better than the earlier map!

I also removed the (9) reference, as that was shoved in there and it's not really that funny nor subtle. Touhou fans would know what it means, but again, it's forced in there so blah. The revamp happened after moving the map from one edge to the other several times, so that's why some areas cease to exist in the first place.

200x30_200_Yojana_Gardens_Old.png

The original map of the Yojana Gardens, found in the Netherworld in Hakugyokurou. I tried to emulate the feel of it being a big garden but...maybe I overdid it a bit? ^^;;

Nonetheless I think it looks alright for a garden sans the size, no?

EDIT - Sadly, there's no actual canon depiction of this garden so I have nothing to reference off of for this. So no images to help with anything here.

80x60_Misty_Lake_Final_Area_Old.png

This is the original map for the final area of Misty Lake. Yes, one of the very first maps I made, and I need to remake it badly methinks. It is based off of this location from Touhou:

Perfect Memento in Strict Sense:

Hisoutensoku:

Fantasy Maiden Wars (fangame but can be a good reference for many places):

"The water in the lake comes from a river originating from the Youkai Mountain. However, at and around noon each day, a strange mist envelops the entire lake, making it difficult to see anything. The origin of this mist is unknown, but it appears that because of the bad visibility, the lake isn't as big as one would think - Akyuu states that it would take about an hour to walk the full length around the river, making its circumference about 3.1 miles(5 km).

The Scarlet Devil Mansion is built on a ridge next to the lake itself, rather than on an island.

Many fairies and youkai alike appear to gather here, especially during the summertime, given the abundant water. The lake and its environs appear to be the home of both Cirno and Daiyousei.

Extremely large monster fish ("monster" possibly meaning youkai, as one is referred to as youkai fish in chapter 12 of Inaba of the Moon and Inaba of the Earth) live in the lake as well, and can occasionally be caught on nights of the new moon. This has led to the lake being popular among anglers who aim to catch such a fish. These fish range from 2 to 5 fathoms (in essence up to 9 meters), with the largest on recording as 10 fathoms (this is believed to be an exaggeration). Since then, Eirin's medicines in chapter 12 of Inaba of the Moon and Inaba of the Earth resulted in the largest monster fish ever recorded, big enough to attempt to swallow Cirno (about the size of a small child).

A "master of the lake" also lives there. However, his house is so deep down that only mermaid or fish folk may dive down there."

I may need to use a different tileset (I believe this is using the default tileset) for this to work better. There is no mist here originally when the player first visits, but it returns the second time the player must come here. Of note, this dungeon is not very long (only 7 maps total, with 2 maps branching on the sides for the Easy and Hard routes each). This is the largest map out of the dungeon, and keep in mind this is supposed to be the tutorial dungeon for the game essentially.

So...any suggestions on how to make this resemble Misty Lake more?

77x54_Poltergeist_Mansion_Bottom_Floors.png

Using this now instead of the screenshot thread I suppose. Changed from previous look slightly (removed the deadend hallway on the left side, made hallways narrower, 3 tiles wide on both sides, 4 tiles on top hallway). Added some more doodads (Es on tables are event mapping items (plates, bottles, books, etc). Removed the 3 tables and made it one giant table in the dining hall (bottom left) added more ot the storage room in the upper right. Not sure what else to do. As Liberty suggested, I could split this into 3 separate rooms, but there'd be hardly any time for the random encounters in any of these rooms (yes, this is actually a dungeon. I didn't mention that when I brought it up in the screenshot thread), hence why I didn't split these up at all.

Maybe I should make a blog detailing some of the important stuff about the game...I think I'll go do that next. But yes, do let me know what you guys think could be done to make it more well...Poltergeist Mansion-y (I don't know how run down, if any, it is in source canon as there's no images for it).

Needs more life... adding anything will help: windows, flowers, cracks on the walls, vines, holes, pots, higher grass at some spots... any kind of decoration.

Yeah, that's a problem with a lot of my maps. They just looks so bland and ugh, especially the beta1 segment maps (heck, some maps right now still look horrible). Mapping was never my strong point (though granted I do think I've gotten better at it, but still not that great with it). I do need to update these screenshots though with something more modern perhaps...

They're not custom, they're rips from Scarlet Weather Rhapsody or...the other fighting game that I cannot recall right now. Starts with an I and introduced Suika.

Immaterial and Missing Power. Others are from MUGEN. I'm not a spriter, so I couldn't sprite even if I wanted to. Well...I DID sprite a long time ago, but I still deem those as failures :<

How about big (majestuous) trees in rows, on each side, for example?

Speaking of this, I forgot that I based this off of a sprite image I found long long ago. It felt like it fit the mansion the best, so I went with it for the outerior.

As for the interior? I forget what I was using for the design of it...the rooms that aren't done in there were meant to be actual rooms, like a music room, ballroom, etc...

Screenshot81.png

Originally I left it that way since I was thinking of expanding the outside with flower gardens and such (since there are gardens in there) but I never got around to it and dummied it out (for now...maybe I'll put it in later on or something...). I might put some trees in that area or something.

Really like your characters, and the rest, nice map, a bit empy maybe?

Yeah, that's a big problem with several of these maps. This particular area in general being one of the biggest thorns in my side...I just can never get the map right for it to feel...mansion like, if you know what I mean? The outside is the best part of the whole thing! >_<
