ZEUZIO'S PROFILE

Just a lizard who makes games sometimes, allegedly!

I'm a computer science student and thus learning how to code...though I also work full time to support myself so my time and energy are limited these days. Still, I hope to get back into gamedev at some point and maybe play a game or two every once and awhile. I'm wanting to maybe learn another engine such as Game Maker or Unity, though RPG's are still my main area of interest so RPG Maker will always have a place in my heart.

Mafia: Demon Realm Game Thread

Flavor: (Warning - Very Long)

Getting into the city was the easy part. "No matter what, we cannot be seen," said Claudia anxiously. "I think we can easily take on one or two demons," said the leader Jasun excitedly, "I mean, we do have the Divine Sword." The party looked in wonder at the shining blade in Jasun's hands.

"I'd rather not have to use it," lamented young Lyla, "they may be demons, but they also have precious lives of their own..." "Shhh!" exclaimed Roy, "someone's coming." The four retreated back behind the demonic building they were hiding behind as two imps obliviously walked by.

"Have you heard the news? That grumpy old Dragon Urgza got his claws on a Gargolwood Root!" grunted the first, shorter imp. "What!?, those things are worth a lotta money these days!" shouted the other, "I would do anything to get my hands on that." "Yeah, too bad his mansion is guarded so heavily or I'd steal that thing in a heartbeat!" The imps turn their gaze towards a large mansion on top of a hill in the distance.

"That must be where the Gargolwood root is," whispered Jasun, "but it looks like getting it might be a problem." "Well we must try."

The party made their way to the mansion, remaining unseen. After carefully inspecting the door, they realized that there was surprisingly no defense mechanisms installed on it. "I suppose we'll just go inside..."

They were greeted by a huge foyer, and on the opposite side of the room was the gargolwood root!

"Finally!" yelled Roy, running towards the root.

"No! Wait!" screamed Claudia, "it's much too easy!"

All of a sudden the party heard a booming voice and the sound of the mansion door locking behind them. "I was expecting you, humans!"

---

The next thing they new, they were at a gallows in the city's town square about to be brutally killed! There were a few demons in attendance, waiting excitedly for the carnage.

"Any last requests, humans?" Suddenly the heroes thought of the elder's words...

"Take these. They might just get you out of a bind."

"The potions..." muttered Lila. "Huh? Speak up, will ya?"

"Those potions, we would like to drink them. They would soften the pain of our passing." The executioner thought for a moment.

"Alright, I can't deny a pretty human's last request, can I?" He handed the potions back to the heroes, who began drinking them.

All of a sudden, huge bursts of light began blasting from the heroes' bodies, completely covering the area in blinding light. "Now's our chance!" The heroes picked up their stolen supplies and, realizing what was actually happening, scattered about the area. When the lights dispersed the heroes were gone...or were they?

"They got away!" said one demon. All of a sudden the booming voice appeared again. "NO! They are still among you!" It was Urgza! "They have been transformed into demons by that potion!" The dragon was furious.

"No one leaves this place until I get revenge. Either on the humans for trespassing or you lot for being so stupid!" The dragon began casting a spell, creating a barrier that trapped the 15 possible suspects inside and sealing any escape powers.

"Whichever of you two groups is alive at the end of this gets to live. I'll even throw in my gargolwood root as a bonus. Har har har! This should be entertaining." The demons in disguise trembled as the plan to be rid of them was decided. By voting, then slaughtering...

With 15 alive, it takes 8 to lynch.

Mafia: Demon Realm

Flavor

The four young warriors stood in the stuffy room, waiting in anticipation for the elder's return. He was taking an unusually long time. "I can't believe today is finally here..." said one of the four. No one responded, everyone lost in their own thoughts and fears. At last the elder returned.

"This mission is if utmost importance, but you know that..." said the elder quite calmly, "It is common knowledge by now that the princess is gravely ill. She can only be cured with a Gargolwood Root, which can only be found in the Demon Realm," he paused for a bit before going on, "You four are to invade the Demon Realm and retrieve the root for our fair princess. You have been trained for this, but are you sure you're ready?" The party nodded.

"Then follow me..." He lead the party down some stairs and into a dark cave. After a while they ended up in a huge chamber. The elder began chanting a spell, and a ring of fire opened up on the floor. "This is the entrance to the Demon Realm," he said, "This portal will close after one month, so you must hurry and find the root. Or else." The world beyond the portal did not look too different from the heroes' own world, but there was definitely an evil aura surrounding it.

"Before you leave," said the Elder, "Take these. They might just get you out of a bind." The elder handed the heroes each a strange potion. "Please heroes, save our princess!" pleaded the Elder as he left the four young warriors alone with the portal. After double checking their supplies, they decided it was time to go.

"That Gargolwood Root isn't gonna find itself..."

They simultaneously jumped into the portal, finding themselves in a distant dimension. There were no demons in sight yet, and the heroes intended to keep it that way.

"According to the map, we must head north to Gargolwood Forest to find what we need," said one warrior with confidence. It took a day of walking to reach the forest, but what they saw shocked them. All of the trees were gone! Or at least dead and of no use.

"What happened here!?" exclaimed someone, "I don't know!" panicked another.
"I imagine they were all cut down by the demons...What do we do now?"
"We must look elsewhere for the root. The princess must be saved!"
"But where?"

All eyes wandered to the city in the distant north. Could what the heroes are looking for be hidden there?

What is Mafia?

author=Wikipedia
Mafia is a party game modelling a battle between an informed minority and an uninformed majority. Players are secretly assigned roles: either "mafia", who know each other; or "townspeople", who know only the number of mafia amongst them. In the game's "night" phase the mafia covertly 'murder' a townsperson. During the day phase, all of the surviving players debate the identities of the mafia and vote to eliminate a suspect. Play continues until all of the mafia have been eliminated, or until the mafia outnumber the townspeople.

To avoid confusion, I'll specify that the mafia in this game are called Heroes and the town are called Demons.

How to Play

The Roles:

Before the game begins, each player is sent a PM assigning him or her a role. The contents of the PM cannot be shared with other players. All roles are assigned randomly. There are three basic types of roles that you can get: Town, Mafia, and Independent.

Town
If you are part of the town, then your objective is to stay alive and try to find out who the scum are. Since you cannot communicate with other players outside of this thread, you must work together and weed out who is lying and who is not.

Mafia
The mafia, on the other hand, have a significant advantage over the town. They can communicate with other mafia members outside the thread in any way they please. During the night, they send a PM to the host(in this case me) telling me which townie they want to kill. If all goes according to their plan(which it might not), then that townie will be dead--thus cannot post or vote--for the rest of the game.

Independents
The goal of an independent role is to simply stay alive until the end of the game. Though some independent roles have other win conditions. They have no set alliance, and can side with either the town or the mafia. An independent usually must be alive at the game's conclusion to win, unlike town or mafia members.

If all mafia members are killed, then The Town Wins!
If enough villagers are killed that they can't lynch the witches, then The Mafia Wins!

Game Structure:

The game starts out in something called a day phase. In this phase, all players who are not dead may participate in discussion as well as vote for who gets lynched(note that you can also vote for no one getting lynched). The day phase will continue until a set deadline has passed or when deciding vote is reached.

Once the day phase is finished, the night phase begins. No one may talk in the thread during this phase, meaning that only players with night actions play a significant role. Night actions are abilities possessed by special roles that can be used to alter the game during the night phase. All night actions, including the mafia's kill, will be sent to me via PM(unless otherwise stated). Once the night phase deadline is reached or when all actions are sent in, I will PM everyone involved with their results and then a new day phase will begin. If anyone dies, then that person will be revealed.

Rinse and repeat until the game is over...

How a majority is reached:
1) When enough players have voted to reach a majority (i.e. if there are 10 people, 6 votes on someone would be a majority).

2) When all players have voted, the person with the most votes will be lynched.

3) If the day's deadline for votes and discussion are reached, whoever has the most votes at the time gets the lynch. It will be a no-lynch if there are no votes.

Birds chirping, bees buzzing, and cannibals cannibalizing. It was the first day of voting, and those who had not already been eaten gathered 'round to cast their suspicions. Or not. There probably wasn't much to go on at Day 1, after all.

After all 16 were together, the gong of fate was rung.

It is now Day 1. It will end 72 hours from now, or when a deciding vote is reached.

With 16 alive, it takes 9 to lynch.

RMN MAFIA EPISODE X:

Witch Hunt

The Setup

The shrieks of human agony and the stench of dark magic corrode the nighttime air around the village of Siren. The witches and warlocks of Amegír have retured to terrorize the poor townsfolk, stealing them away in the darkness for rituals of a sacrificial nature. These rituals give them more power, allowing them to make more sacrifices, thus creating a downward spiral of destruction.

Suspicion is rising, and paranoia is king. Who's a witch? Who's not? The villagers decide to take a vote.

The witch hunt has begun.

Beginner's Intimidation and High Standards

Being a beginner at anything is hard, and RPG Maker is no exception.

Let's say you're new to RPG Maker(whatever version), and your starting your very first game. You'll likely hit quite a few roadblocks. You have plenty of great ideas, but there's no way you can execute like them how you originally planned because you don't know enough about how the program works. Finally, after much tutorial reading, resource hunting, and trial and error, you've put together a demo of your game. You feel the need to share this demo, and so you stumble into a site called rpgmaker.net and create a game page... and... nothing happens. The only feedback your game gets are little one line comments saying useless things like "hey, this is pretty good." In the mean time, you're playing the great games that everyone else is playing, being exposed to work that is much more thought out and appealing than your game, thus decreasing your confidence.

Despite this, you continue working on your game until it's actually a complete product. After playtesting quite a bit by yourself, you finally submit your project in a "Release Day" event, hoping to finally get some actual reviews. After all is said and done, you do indeed get a review: A review with a 0.5 out of 5 rating and so much negativity that it puts Yahtzee to shame. What happened!? And what do you do from there?

I assume many people just quit trying.

Most Some of this is based on personal experience. However, I think I speak for many young, aspiring game makers that being a novice in a community that frowns upon "noob" games is very intimidating, and can turn one off from the hobby as a whole. RTP games? Lame. Familiar sprites/music/whatever? Been there, done that. Of course, there are very helpful people in every community, but there are also those that don't bother to give constructive criticism and instead use snarky comments to mock the maker and the game. Perhaps worse is the fact that many of these games are ignored entirely. And what of the games that are rejected, thus not giving the maker much chance to even figure out what went wrong?

I realize that there are standards on this website, as there should be. I'm not saying that we should pamper novice creators, but rather we should try and point them in the right direction and show them what they're doing wrong in a civil way. After all, we should be trying to expand this community as well as expand the demographic of RPG Makers.

So, is it hard to be a new RPG Maker user when there are such high standards in place already?

Are we doing a good job of integrating new members?

If not, then how will that affect the RPG Making community--particularly RMN--in the future?

What are your thoughts?

New Name

Um, hi.

I'm just a really inactive user of RMN, and I joined back in 2008(Former name was Gemini). I've changed my name to "Zeuzio" because a) it's what I've been using on other sites, b) I personally think it sounds cool, and c) I don't really care for the name "Gemini" any more. I've been in and out of activity on this site for various reasons, usually from lack of internet or lack of interest. But now I'm back, hopefully better than ever. I plan to participate in discussion more as well as PLAY MOAR GAMS! Maybe I'll even write a review... maybe.

RPG Maker VX Ace has piqued my game making interest again, so expect to see a new gamepage from me in the distant future! Or not...

Also, my username is pronounce Zu-zee-oh if you were wondering. If you still can't pronounce it, just call me "Zeuz" or "Zeus", lol.

Long story short: I'm back

For those of you who remember me, I'm back, so yay? For those of you who don't know me, I'm Gemini (obviously).

I'm just a 17 year old kid, although I've been mistaken to be much older irl.
I joined RMN about three years ago, and its the only site of its kind(Game Making) that I've ever joined. Obviously I like video games and making them, or I probably wouldn't be here. =P

Two years earlier, I went through something of a family crisis and money was tight, so internet was one thing that wasn't really practical to have. Now however, things are doing much better, and I've got a job, so we purchased internet again. Hooray! It's been a long two years though, and only partially because of the lack of internet!(high school, drama, tornado...) I've come back older and wiser though, which is better than... well... coming back more stupid or something.

So yeah, more about me, ummm...

Welp, I'll be a senior in high school this year. My current interests are psychology and philosophy, but that's probably highly prone to change. As such, game making is just a hobby, and not anything I'd get really serious about. I also like writing, though inspiration is a bit hard to come by. I am working on a VX game right now, which I might prepare a demo for and upload it here if I feel it's decent enough.

So, uh, it's good to be back, I guess?
