Dreaming Mary Review

Hi Pentagon! Normally I don't comment on the reviews, but I think the matters you bring up deserve recognition.

So, first, thank you for writing about the rape implications in the game. The reason why I don't place warnings is because that solidifies it as canon, even though it is never confirmed in the game that Mari was raped or sexually abused. There is heavy sexual context to Boaris which leads to that conclusion, though, yes.

I thought for a long time about the level of warning to put on the game during development but eventually settled with a reference to Eversion's. Dreaming Mary's story is heavily centered on interpretation, so I had to make the choice between keeping all interpretations valid or including warnings which would bias the players. Maybe it was morally the wrong choice, maybe not.

I agree wholeheartedly that I handled the game and dialogue clumsily and I'm aware that the implications in the game are disturbing, so I actually do approve of spreading word to people who really shouldn't play this game for personal reasons. If I could go back in time I'd change Boaris's dialogue to be more subtle, but at this point it's one of many, many issues to work on in a distant future remake.

If it's anything reassuring, the rape/sexual abuse implication was included solely for plot purposes and not for the horror/shock factor, though I understand why it can and is perceived that way.

I've talked about this in private correspondence as well, so do know that you aren't the first to write about these concerns. You bring up many more valid points about the game's grimmer side that I will keep in mind with my future work. I am putting clearer warnings on the new games I'm working on to make clear that these aren't actually happy games despite the cute graphics, as it's not actually my intention to make people deeply uncomfortable.

Finally, I'm sorry that you had bad experiences with Dreaming Mary (to put it lightly) and I hope you'll be able to clear them from your mind and find happier things to think about, because you deserve to have a good time and not a bad one.

Again, thank you for taking the time to write about your thoughts and concerns; I really appreciate it!

No prob and you deserve the praise! XD
I actually just finished playing Dead Moon Night, which was also great because of the unexpected character twists (which had me laughing through the game all up to that final one XD)

I hear you're making a commercial game too, so I'll be looking out for that! Keep up the great work!
