Excellence in Narrative - Pacing

While I do agree some of those pointers are open to discussion, I do like this article. This is the kind of thing most writers never put too much thought into, and they make a huge difference in the game.

Gender Roles in Gaming

I don't think I even have the courage to read my own opinions on this topic from over ten years ago. Would it be better if I deleted it, do you think?

Of course not. Maybe just edit the article and add a disclaimer "some of my opinions may have changed". But if it's thought provoking, it's still valuable.

CSS'ing your RMN Game Profile

Another question: how do I make the background transparent and the RMN logo a light color like in this sample image? I changed everything, but there's still a white panel with the RMN logo in it.

--edit--

Never mind, found it. Also I learned how to look into other people's CSS now, so it's easier to figure out stuff.

The CSS for that is this:

div.contents.even, div.contents.odd {
    border-bottom: 1px solid #CCC;
}

Change the color from #CCC to another, or can set the border-bottom to none with an !important flag. Been ages, so I'm not to certain if that'll work.

It worked! Very nice. I changed my Beautiful Escape profile, now I think I can use it as template for others.

yeah the CSS is ugly, being that it is a decade old.

Anywho, doing a quick inspect and finding the element, try

div.frame {
background: none;
}

Nice! Already made a huge difference!
Now all I want to know is how to take the white line between post blocks.

CSS'ing your RMN Game Profile

Would asking for a template be too lazy of my part? All I want to do is take off all the white from the original design, and no matter how many elements I change, some whites remain (this is the best I can do).

Really loved this one. Listening Calunio talk for the first time sure was something else.
Nice job.

Hahaha I'm glad it made an impression.
Talking in English for 3h straight for the first time was quite challenging too.

Very nice! I like how you developed different personalities to each line!

I specially liked the "Don't plan. Improvise" part, because that's exactly how I write. I always start by having a premise + a few characters, then I write dialog for them and then I add more and more things organically until I end up with something good that can be finely tuned into a good story.

Yeah, the more I use this logic in my writing, the better I like the results. I feel like my best ideas come WHILE I'm writing dialogs, not before. Some things just seem to be evoked by the context of the dialog.

Agree with all the points made, however I feel like these examples rely on adding additional plot points or potentially confusing the point of the scene.

You are absolutely right.
I did mix surprising presentation with surprising plot because it's very difficult to add surprising elements to an ordinary event, but I like your Ex Machina example. Should be hard implementing that in a game though, because I dialog so long would have to amount to something pretty amazing to keep players hooked.

Featured Game, Featured Dev: calunio

author=Kylaila
Nice interview! Calunio's definitely one of the developers that really inspired me in that, truly, they do tackle games noone else makes with all the good n bad attached. (playing the game was an incredibly disturbing experience. researching and making it must've been even worse.)

Really curious that the game could've featured a random rich man, though. (also 12h/day is CRAZY, wow.)

I'm glad my games inspired you like that! In light of that, can you recommend me any one of your own games?

If Verge was a random rich man, the game would be way more generic and flavorless. Unless the rich man was also troubled in some way. We're living a time in which no one likes perfect characters anymore. We empathize with troubled and problematic (see Joker).

Of course, yet ANOTHER alternative is to make controversial games. 8) 8) 8)

Yep, I'm familiar with that option. ;)
