Hero's Realm Review

It's usually more polite to start with the good about the game, and follow with the bad. Because now I'll always remember Hero's Realm as "an RPG lacking an emotionally moving plot, featuring bland characters, horribly basic dialogue, and completely lacking any sort of memorable villain to speak of...".

Also, I don't think saying "Hero's Healm is like FFV, but better" is really a compliment. Games like FFV are completely outdated, and though I enjoyed playing them back then, I couldn't get myself to play such games now. What I mean is... I expected you to be more convincing with " I want everyone to play this game and educate themselves on the true merits of RPG Maker".

Also, I completely disagree with "At most it allows you to make old school RPGs featuring dungeons, puzzles, enemies, battles, and so forth.". There's much more than that.

Standards

Good questions, good discussions.

I like Stress' post:

I have very low standards as I currently would just like to finish ANY RPG Maker project before I die.

That's a tough dilemma to figure out. 'Cause... well, if your standards are too high, you'll have trouble actually finishing things. If they are too low, you may actually get to finish something, but who's gonna care about it anyway?

I've been having trouble with this, because my standards increase dramatically over the course of my project. For instance, I started using chipsets from other places, then I got to editing them, after that I made chipsets from template just importing pieces from other chips and editing them, and now I'm actually making my tiles (and I'm talking about the same project). I'm satisfied with what I've been achieving, but I catch myself sometimes wasting hours to draw a 3-TILE WALL, and it's very frustrating.

There's got to be a balance between having a high standard and being practical. Sometimes high standards are not realistic, because your players won't really care about some details. But then again, you might as well do nothing instead of working on crappy games (or poorly developped projects).

My standards are high, but not too high for other people's games. Overused graphics, bad mapping, bad dialogues, plot cliches, dull battle systems, all huge turn-offs. Like someone else said, I expect something at least slightly original and refreshing when I play someone else's game. I mean, if I'm going to play a traditional-styled game, I might as well play a commercial one, so I always look for something unique in amateur games... and it's really hard to find.

Yep... you should better cast haste, instead of remaking the whole game.

Aggem

It looked great at first glance, but seemed almost impossible to make the simplest of animations. I didn't read a tutorial or anything, but I thought it was too complicated. Don't know if it's any good.

RM2K3 Battle Layout

When I started making my RM2K3 game using DBS, among the 3 battle layout alternatives I chose GAUGE, because I think it's cool to see character faces while fighting (like this).

But I just noticed something: in Traditional Layout, you get to see both characters and enemies conditions (poisoned, crazy, etc.). This information is not available on Gauge... and it's kinda important, right?

Should I go for practical or bautiful?

With the time and willpower you would need to make a FFX remake, you could beat Sin a thousand times with your eyes closed. I wouldn't expect it to take you less then a year to make a helf-decent remake... that considering you're really making an effort. And for my experience in the RPGMaker community, chances that you'll ever finish such project are close to winning the lottery. So... don't do that. Seriously.

Two teasers, a banner, and a release date, oh my!

Since I can't say "don't do it", I'm curious as to why you're making this remake.

Dhux's Scar Review

Well, I wasn't hating RTP, I was hating overused graphics. I know Erilex used soms RTP tiles, but it doesn't make the game look RTP-ish. If you look at a screen like my mock RTP version, you would never guess what game is it, and that's the problem. You could easily recognize Dhux's Scar from a screenshot of it, despite the RTP tiles, and that's what I was calling uniqueness.
