Ace is a pretty good engine, though? I think there's still a non-zero number of users that would swear by 2K3, but, yeah, having the right toolset for your vision is pretty important.

Maybe I've been out of the loop but I'd consider 2k3 to be more popular than Ace at this time in history, considering that 2k3 still got updates while Ace is now forever frozen in time.

Not to mention Ace's native resolution is woefully miniaturized for today's standards without having the benefit of looking full retro to justify it like 2k/3 does.

I wouldn't regret a purchase on it (specially from two years ago considering Ace is like $2 every other weekend), but I don't have many praises to sing about it anymore.
You're not harming yourself by having VXAce, per se. At least it's not VX, which had very little support and was replaced by VXAce very quickly.

Ace is definitely showing its age nowadays and has fallen out of popularity. Maybe look at 2k3 if you want something that can do pixel graphics easily, or MV/MZ if you plan to make something that needs more power behind it.

That's probably a fair assessment, though. I also wonder what the dead link rate is with Ace versus 2K/2K3. Like, there's an entire thread devoted to old/obscure games, mostly made in the early days of TsuK/TsuK3. Though, if I tried to visit one of GrandmaDeb's links, there's probably a non-zero number of dead links there, too.
Some legacy RMs really need to be open sourced or have an open source alternative because the only thing holding VX Ace back (and rm2k3 to some extent) are the dumb EULAs that prevent certain modding and updating. MZ/MV just feel so bloated that they end up not being absolute replacements depending on your needs.

no worries though I'll make my own RPG Maker someday

someday...
I mean, I still swear by VX, and never used Ace, but that's also because I've worked with it for over 10 years now. Breaking the bounds of the engine is dependant on how prolific you are with Ruby. And if you REALLY want to get creative, you can rewrite the DLL files to break the boundaries even further. But for all that work, you could probably get an equal or better result just by using a newer engine. Regardless, whatever engine you use is perfectly fine for making a game, just depends on how much work you want to put in.
RM Ace is by no means a bad RPG Maker. I can't even say if a RPG Maker is bad at all. Hell, there are people still using VX to this day, as you can see per the reply above. And I mention VX because its mapping system wasn't the most popular back then (coming from the three-layers XP mapping system).

It all narrows down to what you feel more comfortable with. I, for example, adore using VX Ace. I can use all engines, but VX Ace is just my favorite. But, if you need more power (different resolutions, porting, better performance) I can't tell you "yes, use Ace over MV" when MV and MZ are clearly more powerful engines.

TL:DR; Use whatever you feel the most comfortable with. All engines are equally good depending on how proficient you are with them.
