Dealing with death as a plot point?

I usually just call it K.O. instead of death. In the end, it's just names confusing the narrative, so, it's pretty easy to patch up.

It would be the same thing if there was a pivotal "character gets poisoned" moment in your game or something. Why not just throw an antidote at them? etc.


The ol' Pokemon route... solid idea.

I agree with the above posts of just watching your wording but want to give one alternative: Make it so (FF5 mid-game spoilers at link) you hulk the fuck out and fight past your last stand. I don't have any objections that a phoenix down won't work on somebody who just took the grand daddy of ass kickings and kept standing until the end.


I was leaning toward this, honestly, before I posted.

I use "defeated" as my death state, since KO'd makes me think of an MMA match and it doesn't really fit with my game's medieval setting.


I like this idea. I am also doing a medieval-set game with a relatively serious tone, so this may work...

Have a crashing, burning airship shear through the town where said NPC lives. Cinematic death beats all.


Was it that obvious that I'm trying to fridge an entire town and needed ideas?? :D I like the cinematic death idea, but my eventing prowess may take a few more games to get there.

Just kill them harder. Sure, it makes sense to use a phoenix down on that guy who died from a slow gut wound or from being set on fire (plus, he JUST died, like just now) but it doesn't make sense to use it on that guy that just got split in half by a mountain falling on him or died being hit by a train into another train. Phoenix downs can only set so many broken bones, right?


I like this idea... with the phoenix down having somewhat circumscribed powers. This would work in my game world...

Dealing with death as a plot point?

I've run into a narrative cul-de-sac, and I wanted to know how other people deal with it:

In a standard RPG, there are things that recover from the death state (e.g., phoenix down, stay at inn, raise spell, etc.). How do you explain the death of NPCs? Couldn't someone just use a phoenix down on them and raise them up again? Or take them to the inn? If this is brought up in the narrative, how is this discrepancy dealt with?

I need to kill off some NPCs, but I'm struggling with why my team of heroes won't just use a bunch of phoenix downs on them and call it a day...

I'm sure this has been discussed before, so if someone has a link to that discussion, that's fine too.

Windows 10? Should I update?

Good call on signing up for the download and holding off on the install.
I was afraid that registering for it would be an automatic update-kind-of-deal, where one day I'd turn off my computer and POOF I'd suddenly have Windows 10. Durr... that's not how computers work!
Just paranoid. Because I know firefox, word, excel, and my other programs will surely work in Windows 10 (or there is an army of people to get them to work). But if I started vxace and it didn't work, I'd freak.
I'm on 7 right now, and I'm happy with it.

[RMVX ACE] [Battle Symphony] Problem with Enemy Character Add-on

Max , that index refers to the weapon 147 which would have it's own icon set to it Yes, but their needs to be a weapon 147 first.


Thanks so much! This is the answer I was looking for! I have either been reading the wrong directions or completely misinterpreting them.

For people who may be having the same issue, the number refers to the number of the weapon in the "weapon" tab. The number of the icon in the iconset has nothing to do with it (which is where I was totally wrong). So if you put in <weapon 1: 20> it makes the long sword show up.

[RMVX ACE] [Battle Symphony] Problem with Enemy Character Add-on

I'm having a problem with Yami's Battle Symphony and the Enemy Character Add-on.
If you're unfamiliar with these scripts, they can be found here:

The battle symphony seems to work fine, but the enemy character add-on only seems to half work. I can get a custom enemy sprite to show up, but they don't swing a weapon. I'm not sure of the issue, since I think I have the notetag right. In fact, this is what my page looks like:



But that redhead sure doesn't want to swing a sword...

Basically, when the girl attacks, she should swing a little sword.
Any suggestions?

Does anyone have a copy of Holders Animated Battlers Enemies they can post and/or direct me to? It looks like the links for his enemies are broken on his original page and his last blog post, in August, says that he's taking some time off. You know, ethics and niceness and all, I'd like to download them directly from him and support his site/advertisers/etc., but man - every link is dead! And even resource threads on rpgmaker-related websites are down when you click on the enemies (the pets and heroes work though).

I'm just getting into putting together my next game and I'm switching over to a side battle system. And I'm having trouble finding good enemies - I'm hoping to track these down! Thanks!
