Spelunkying 3-30: Her

This is Spelunkying: The Colossal Cave. It's based on the PC version of Spelunky, of which I'm responsible for a few mods. The game may be the setting, but the story is (more or less) original since the game doesn't have a proper one itself.

Even if you've never played Spelunky, you don't need to know anything about it to understand the comic. The pages are a bit large for forum viewing, so I'm keeping them in hide tags and leaving links as well.

I'll change the topic line with each new update! I hope you all enjoy the read. :3

Spelunkying 1-15: Gold Digger

Call me crazy for posting this here, but I'm doing it anyway. I used to try sharing my artwork on RMN in the Creative Corner, but it seems the people who frequent that section just aren't big comic readers.

This is a comic based on a game, though, so maybe it still applies here???

I'll do my best to keep it updated fairly often. I hope you guys enjoy it! And if not...welp!

Name That BGM (Concluded?)

Since the SMBX engine is compatible with mp3s, people have used all kinds of different music in the stages and games they've made with it. I recently went through a bunch of these games and collected together all the cool tunes that were used.

But the problem is that I don't know what a lot of these songs are. I was able to decipher most of them through Google and YouTube, but some don't even have enough information in their file names to search off of. Thus, I need help identifying these songs I don't know. So I decided to make a forum game out of it!

I'll link these songs one at a time in this thread. Anyone who can tell me the correct title of the song and what it's from will earn a point. Whoever has the most points by the end of my backlog wins. Sound fun? No? Well, goddammit.

Current Song: None, it's over!

Unclaimed (name for points!):
Castle1f
Crystal
dimension2
Spooky1
Spooky2
Spooky3
suspense

Put your video game music knowledge to the test! Name that BGM!

*If the file name and track title are the same, just repeat it in your answer. Also, it's possible not all of these are from video games. Also also, if the source doesn't have an official soundtrack, the name of the place/character/situation will be fine. Basically, if I can plug the answer into YouTube and find it instantly, it's good.

Trying Once More

I've tried to share my comics here in the past, but it never blew over too well. At best, the things I posted were ignored, and for a while I couldn't figure out why. A few months ago, I was rereading one of my old stories, and I couldn't help but notice...it really sucked, and I had this moment of clarity where it was like "No WONDER nobody cared!"

But the reason I can tell they suck is because I've advanced myself to the point where I can spot the things that make those old comics so weak, and I'm able to produce better work as a result. It spurred me to start over from square one and retell all my old stories. It might sound counter-productive, but I got into this hobby for my own enjoyment, and I don't have fun reading my old work anymore. It just makes me cringe.

So I'm hoping I can try again to share my comics on RMN, and maybe find some readers here. A few of you already follow me on deviantArt, but it can be nice to get outside opinions on things, which brings me to the point of this thread. I'm preparing to share my comics in more places than just dA and RMN, but I need some feedback on an experiment first. I tried something a bit different with this page, and I'd be glad to hear any sort of criticism you can offer about it:

Folders for Lockers?

Has this idea come up before? Because some method of organizing my locker would be greatly appreciated. Sure, there's the search function, but sometimes you can't pull up everything you're looking for just through file name alone.

Review Scores: An Informal Poll

I'd like to do an experiment with you all, if you please. This isn't a debate topic. It's not about the site's standards. It is, as the title says, a pure and simple informal poll. Through it, I'm hoping to shed some light on the various thoughts and perceptions regarding a topic many people seem to hold very strong opinions for: review scores.

For each person who posts, I'd like you to fill out what each of the following scores means TO YOU. It can be one word. It can be a short paragraph. It can be a long paragraph. However you like, just put something describing what each one means in your opinion.

Also, PLEASE PUT YOUR RESPONSES IN HIDE TAGS. This is to prevent your opinions from possibly influencing others opinions before they post. It is recommended that you POST BEFORE READING THE RESPONSES OF OTHERS.

Although RMN has 11 options for review scores, I'm only asking you rate the following for simplicity's sake.

.5
1
2
3
4
5

Please keep any additional banter to a minimum. Again, THIS IS NOT A DEBATE. This is you posting your opinions on the subject matter, and all responses should be treated as unrelated.

This is the format your posts should follow, though I'm sure this will go horribly wrong somewhere down the line:

.5 - what this means to me
1 - what this means to me
2 - what this means to me
3 - what this means to me
4 - what this means to me
5 - what this means to me

STAB II

As some of you may know (probably not), I have an affinity for art tournaments on deviantArt. I entered quite a few back in 2011, all of them were Pokémon-related, and I even managed to win one of them! That tournament happened to be STAB. And now they're holding a sequel tournament, and I'm totally entering it again.

Before I get into the comics 'n such, I think I should first explain a little about how these things work. For the most part, they follow this general format:

The tournament is single-elimination, accepting a typical number of participants (16, 32, 64, etc.). Entrants create a character of their own design and submit it along with a reference page and audition. The judges examine the auditions to select their roster, pair the artists with each other, and begin the games.

Each round usually lasts about a month or so (art takes time to make! ._.), and each artist is charged with the task of creating a comic showing their character overcoming their opponent's character in whatever way that might entail (you can, and should, be creative about it!). When the deadline passes, the judges look at the submitted entries, decide who won, and those artists advance to the next round. The champion is declared when only one artist remains.

For Pokémon tournaments, it's a little trickier, since you also have to make a Pokémon team to go with your trainer character. There are plenty of guidelines to follow, but it's pretty simple otherwise.

The tournament I won was something of a unique case. It allowed both comic AND written entries, and it started with only 48 members. They decided to let two people back in as wild cards after the 3rd round to make up for it. I lost the 2nd round, but performed very well as a spectator in the 3rd, earning my way back in for the 4th. After that, I went on to be victorious over the whole thing. Given that this tournament is a sequel to the last, reading my story for the original is advisable, as it's considered tourney canon. You can find the start of that here.

All that said, here's my ref and audition for STAB II. The pictures are too big to fit on the forums, so I'll leave links to them and put 'em in hide tags.

Ref Sheet!

Audition start!

I've tried to share my comics on these forums in the past, but they were all kinda really shitty back then, so I hope things can go differently now. I'll keep this thread up to date with my progress in the tournament, and I hope you guys enjoy it enough to see it through to the end.

If you have any questions or comments, I'd be happy to hear them. :3

hali's 1000th comic page

It's been a long, long time since I first started writing comics. I picked it up out of the blue one day in high school. That was late August of 2004. Just yesterday, I drew my 1000th full-length page. Since a lot's changed since I last tried to share my artwork with you guys, I figured what the heck.

In celebration of reaching such a tremendous number, I decided the 1000th page would be a remake of the 1st page, so they could be compared to see just how far I've come. Unfortunately, the forums (probably) aren't big enough for you to properly view them here. They're posted in the following hide tags along with links back to deviantArt where you can view them at full size.

By the way, my first comic series was a shitty recreation of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

1st Page: It All Began with Ocarina of Time...

1000th Page: Back to Square One

Now, I know this thing isn't perfect. If I had to criticize myself, I'd say I made the colors in the second half too saturated, affecting the first half (since that's where they were generated from). I could've placed a few word balloons better, my handwriting is still just barely acceptably legible, and some of my older humor is just too juvenile for redemption. Otherwise, I think it's pretty good, and I hope I can share more of what I make with you guys here. At least without getting torn a new anus.

Workshop and Showcase

Two ideas I decided to finally get off my lazy butt and share.

The Workshop is actually just a rendition of The Void that I proposed a while back. Basically, a place for games that would otherwise be denied, where they can receive feedback and criticism for improvement. The name was changed to be less potentially offensive.

The Showcase, however, is rather the opposite. A place to single out the best that RMN has to offer.

Now before you all start shouting ELITISM ARGH BURN THE WITCH, let's think about just how this feature should work. For a game to get in the Showcase would not be a simple matter. It wouldn't be based off page views, star count, download count, pretty screenshots, or any of that non-indicative superficial crap. No, for a game to get in the Showcase, its creator would have to request it, and a member of the staff (or maybe two or three) would have to sit down and actually play it. We might need some new staffers for this, as it would require that they not only have the time for such an endeavor, but also the critical eye and attentiveness to detail that can discern the games that truly stand out. Okay, so we'd actually need new members with these qualities.

Pros of such a thing would include having a place to celebrate RMN's best beyond the ephemeral featured game slot, and something to show the rest of the world we're not all just Billy's First RPG Maker Game.

Cons would probably be a huge backlog of whiners who don't understand why they're not good enough to be in it. How we deal with that would probably need to be handled case by case, much like the submission queue. Not all suggested games would have to be played; if one's obviously not worth it, it could be knocked off the list with an explanation to the creator or something.

But that's the gist of the idea. What do you guys think of these two things?
