Somebody talk me into/out of this

Okay, so, I've been thinking about custom graphics lately, and I'm debating whether or not I should make some for my current project. On the outset, it seems like an all-around good idea, but I've broken it down into several pros and cons.

Pros

- unique style: the game would finally be its own thing instead of another stupid RTP adventure.
- more appeal: having its own look would make the game more appealing...or less unappealing, as it were.
- good practice: I'm not the best pixel artist, and I do want to go all-custom eventually anyway, so this would certainly be helpful experience.

Cons

- time consuming: this project is already taking far longer than I hoped it would. The default graphics aren't pretty, but they're a means to an end for something I've been dying to get over and done with.
- custom is worse?: as before, I'm not a very good artist, and making all my own graphics might result in...well...some disappointing visuals.
- superficial only: even with different graphics, the game would still have some underlying issues that wouldn't be fixed by them. I don't know if people are more forgiving of such things when games look prettier, but would I be better off focusing on these things instead?
- no one would play it no matter what graphics I used.

So, I'm at an impasse. New graphics would give it a new look and give me good practice, but the time sink would be huge with a result that might not even be worth it. What do you folks think?

Love Songs Suck

The man singing this song is an idiot. The tune is okay; I can even overlook that he can't seem to hit some of his own notes. But by far the worst thing about this is: he's wrong. There are millions of ways to say 'I love you.' He's just using the most direct one. He sounds like a complete moron and I get so irritated every time he comes up on the radio (at work, where I can't do anything about it).

But this isn't just about him. It's about love songs in general. It's the focus of so much music, nowadays and going way back, but most of them are just SO AWFUL. People singing about infatuation, begging each other to stay together, how overpowering their feelings are for each other, it's sickens me.

Now, I personally prefer the kind of love songs that say 'I love you' without even using the word 'love.' Here's a good example:

Aerosmith - I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing

and another:

Elton John - Your Song

So, what's your opinion on love music? Does it make you want to puke as much as I do? Are there some kinds you prefer over others? And why?

I mean, really, is that absolutely necessary? Isn't it against the rules somewhere?

I figured this was moronic enough to be posted in Moronic.

Finally, a text adventure done right. By doing it all for you.

Careful, though! It's a long story!

halibabica is bad at art

...but I still try anyway!

As some of you may know, when I'm not busy making bizarre design choices for RPGs, I'm busy writing comics in my own, AHEM, "quaint" style. I have a deviantArt gallery that's stuffed to the brim with them; almost every comic I've ever written is in there (only those lost with time are excluded).

Anyway, I thought I'd share some of my stuff with you folks here. Right now, I have three different projects going.

The first and foremost is a comic I'm writing for an online tournament. It's an OCT (original character tournament) set in the Pokémon universe. So far, I've made it to round 3 and am doing quite well!
PCBCOS

Second, I have been writing comics about Spelunky. The game doesn't have a story of its own, so I'm free to interpret its various plot elements as I wish. It's coming along pretty well, I think.
Spelunkying

And third, I have a massive ongoing effort to retell the story of Aidyn Chronicles (obscure N64 RPG) in comic-form. It's already over 130 pages, and nowhere near finished.
Aidyn, Chronicled

I also have some older finished projects in my gallery, but they're not as good since I've been improving my methods recently. Plus, they're no longer in progress because, y'know, they're done.

So, take a look, tell me what ya think, and if anyone's interested, I'll keep you updated when I have new episodes of stuff to post. Enjoy!

Oh, and I guess I could put up a sample page or something.

Standards

Everybody has them, whether you think about them or not. They're an important thing to understand, but are by their very nature an unwritten and vague concept. We have them for how we act, what we like, what we don't like, and why. If something isn't up to our standards, we won't give it a second thought. And that ties in a lot with what we do around here. Whether it's choosing which games to play or making our own, standards shape our decisions and actions.

So, what are your standards? Do you keep them low because this is 'just a hobby?' Do you take your work seriously and try to be professional? Do you hold others to the same standards you set for yourself?

And what about games released on RMN, what sort of standards do you need to have met for you to play them, or even consider playing them?

I myself have very high standards. It's always been my philosophy that a job worth doing is worth doing well. When it comes to game making, that shows itself in my extensive efforts to keep my games bug-free. I always check everything I can to make sure it's working the way I intend it to. I don't expect the same solidity in others' games, though. I know it isn't easy getting everything just right.

So, yeah, what are your standards? Did you know you even had any?

Is anyone else as crazy about Spelunky as I am?

Because I freaking LOVE this game. I've beaten it, I've gotten all the trophies and found every secret, and I still keep coming back for more. For those who haven't heard of it, here's the original TIGSource topic: http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=4017.0

It's an absolutely brilliant game, although it is viciously difficult. Anyway, I bring this up because I've been toying around with the game's stage editor and making some fun shtuff I wanted to share.

http://spelunky.wikia.com/wiki/User-Made_Levels

This is a list of a bunch of user-made levels, and mine are included in it. You can access the editor from the title screen by pressing F2, and play existing levels by pressing F3. I'm really proud of 'Fight' and 'Power Up' but you need to know a lot about the game to make it through them.

So, share your thoughts! What do you like/hate about Spelunky? Talk about your epic victories and horrible deaths, or download it if you've never played before! If ever there was a game I would give a 10/10, this would be it.

Discuss!

Changing topic titles

Is there any way to do this anymore? I'd like to update the title of my review thread, but all I can do right now is edit my posts. Also, if there isn't, can we get that function back? It can really come in handy sometimes.

If you had to make the next Sonic game...

Sonic games (these days) are terrible. The lil' blue bastard we grew to love in the time of Sega Genesis has sunk so low, he may as well be six feet under by now. The last good game he was in was Smash Bros., for crap's sake!

But, I don't think the situation's hopeless. There's still plenty of potential in the Sonic franchise; it just needs to be implemented differently. And by differently, I mean NOT giving Sonic a sword or turning him into a werewolf.

Unfortunately, it seems the Sonic fanbase isn't able to do much better, considering the level of quality of most Sonic fangames we see.

So I'm asking YOU, the sharp folks of RMN, to give the hedgehog what he deserves! No, I don't want you to bury him, I want you to come up with a concept for a new Sonic game! Where do you think the series should go next? How would you redeem Sonic from his fall from grace?

This is all pure speculation, and I don't expect any of these ideas to actually be made into games. But don't limit yourselves in your thinking! It's not like it has to be done in RM* or anything.

Seriously, if you could do anything you wanted with Sonic, what would you do? Be they story ideas, gameplay ideas, or otherwise, I want to hear 'em! Go, go, go! How would you save Sonic?

I have my own idea I'd like to share, but I'll post it at a later time.
