I've done that. You need to dive off, not jump, it means you hit the water with a clean (and painless) entry.
e: I'm assuming your talking about pain in the parts of you that broke the water surface, rather than something like ear pain due to pressure, because that's a horse of a different colour.

Yeah, I don't know how to dive properly. I kinda just walked up the edge and sorta fell off.
I had belly flops before, from jumping into a pool; they were generally more fun than painful, and I (foolishly) thought a 10m-ish cliff is no different. My scarlet chest and abdomen says otherwise.
