KENTONA'S PROFILE

I make games from the heart instead of wasting time with research or experience.

I am an amateur RPG designer and hobbyist with a strong interest in the retro-RPG and NES/SNES era RPG genres. I also happen to be a professional software developer.

I enjoy hockey, video games, reading, writing and playing board games such as Settlers of Catan.

I spend far too much time on RMN, but accomplish nothing of use. I used to be a somebody.

<Clyve> Oh yeah, Kenton you're a somebody again so you should probably modify your profile.
<kentona> so I am

News Flash with Kermit the Frog [7 Reasons the 21st Century is Making You Miserable]

- News Flash -

This thread is intended to be used to post links to current news topics that you find relevant to the RMN populace and then discuss.

Please, put a little bit of a comment into your post, should you be posting a new news item.

I'll start:

---------------------------------------

Friendly Internet Spider-Man and other Marvel comics go online
News article link

Marvel will be placing it's original comics online in the coming months. About 2,500 issues will be available at launch of Marvel Digital Comics. One example they give are Stan Lee's original Amazing Spiderman comics from 1963. Amazing Spiderman #1 used to be only available by paying through the nose for some rare collectable comic, but now we will be able to read it on our own!

(So this may not be earth-shaking news, or even very tragic, but I think it's cool.)

Top Ten Topic: Nintendo Entertainment System

It's Top Ten Topic time again, people.

This time the Top 10 topic deals with the console that single-handedly destroyed hundreds of thousands of kids ability to form meaningly and constructive social relationships. Also, saved the video game industry!

Most of you are probably too young to have played an NES, but I don't care. Throw together a list anyways. These are the games that defined the entire Nintendo franchise - your Donkey Kongs, your Marios, your Links, you Samus Arans, your Kid Icaruses.

I got the NES bundled with Super Mario Bros. Duck Hunt wasn't even released yet.

Here's wikipedia to my rescue once again: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NES_games

..:: Top 10 List of Favorite NES Games ::..

10. M.C. Kids
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M.C._Kids
Yeah, yeah...of all the games that I could've chosen, I choose the game set in McDonaldland. Say what you will, but this game is really fun. Video game critics often accused it of copying from other games (particularly from Super Mario Bros. 3), and the game was far too difficult to be marketed for a younger videogame audience. Like that's a bad thing.

9. Kid Icarus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kid_Icarus
This is a kickass game. And damn hard when you are 7 years old. You play as Pit, the fallen angel in Angeland. Your goal is to kill Medusa. Pit can run and jump, shoot arrows, upgrade his equipment (and health meter), summon allies, and use items in this platformer. (This game also had a New Game+ mode - Chrono Trigger eat your heart out!)

8. Adventure Island 3
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventure_Island_3
Master Higgins (which I maintain should be a Super Smash Bros. playable character) is at it again! This island native rides a variety dinosaurs as you make your way through this fun platformer. You should try it out if you get the chance.

7. Mega Man 3
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mega_Man_3
This was the first Megaman I really got into. I probably would've gotten into Megaman with the first game if that gawd-awful cover of the first game didn't turn me off so much whenever my dad took me to the video store to rent games on 2-for-1 Games Wednesday. Megaman 2 and 4 are also awesome.
Fuck that is an ugly box.

6. Ducktales
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DuckTales_(video_game)
Scrooge McDuck on a pogostick cane? Awesome.

5. Super Dodge Ball
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Dodge_Ball
This game is one of the best sports games ever made. Warping glowing dodgeballs pummeled the opposition, often sending them into the stratosphere! A full game takes less than an hour. Get a ROM and try this bad boy out. Sam rules.

4. Super Mario Bros. 2
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros._2
A big departure from any other Mario game, really, but a hella-lot of fun. (I seem to be saying 'fun' a lot - the NES was known for that). Toad is awesome, and will be in SSBB, you'll see.

3. Dragon Warrior IV
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Warrior_IV
This game is pretty much the first console RPG to have a main villain with a purpose. Necrosaro is so badass. It's the Dragon Warrior games that set the standard for other RPGs to be "cliche".
The Hero was living in a calm village with his family, but his town was finally discovered by Necrosaro. In an assault of monsters, the hero's best friend used her transform magic to disguise herself as the hero and sacrificed herself to the army so as to fool them into thinking that the real hero was dead.
See?

2. Dragon Warrior III
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Warrior_III
No one saw this one coming. This game is so awesome the Japanese gov't forbade the sale of future DQ games to occur on weekdays. It is the best selling game of the series (if you count remakes - the Gameboy Color one is pretty good. It adds a new class.)

1. Super Mario Bros. 3
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_Bros._3
Gaming perfection. Best platformer ever. They made a fucking movie based on kids playing this game.

This game went on to come second place in GameSpy's Title Fight, a user driven tournament to discover the gamer's favorite game. http://archive.gamespy.com/titlefight/brackets.shtml. The reason why this tournament has merit is because Chrono Trigger beat out Final Fantasy VII in the first round, meaning that the voters have good taste.

Play the original, or one of the many remakes. Seriously, if you haven't beaten this game, you need to soon (or I will ban you).

What are you working on?

What are you working on?

Straightforward question for a simple thread. Outline the projects and/or media you are currently working on.

Hero's Realm
I'm plugging away at Chapter 5: The War On Terror, the final chapter in the Hero's Realm saga (very slowly). I am hoping to get a full release ready in time for Christmas. I have the plot outlined and built most of the scripting I need to handle swapping parties on the fly. Still have to do a shitload of mapping and dialog though.

I am also in the midst of updating the website. It's the game's manual, but it's out of date, so I figure I'd better update it.

Lastly, there is a super secret (by which I mean it's already been leaked) component being worked on for HR.

Generica
Story and plot and quest and worldbuilding design is underway. It's the Mewd-yamata-kentona-show right now, but hopefully others will begin to chip in their thoughts. (It's the sticky just above this, people!)

Join now!

Generica is going to be big. Chris Crocker big.

Hellion
On a bit of a hiatus. I found that managing all the switches, varibles and whatnot for every single monster, chest, trap and door got to be very tedious very quickly. I need some motivation to finish this.

Runelords - Atramentus Rising
Has anyone even heard of this game? On hold indefinately.

Top Ten Topic: 10 Favorite Comic Strips!

Time for another round of RMN most neglected topic! (Brought to you by the letters K and G and the number 4)

Once again, wikipedia comes to my rescue http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_comic_strips. Good for them.

Now, I am opening the catergory to include Webcomics, if that's your thing. Be sure to provide us with a link at least. While characters like Batman and the Hulk might have had a comic strip, they are really considered comic books, which is a subject of another Top 10 list altogether.

My writing is very uninspired in this one, but I doubt you read it anyways...

..:: Top 10 List of Favorite Comic Strips ::..

10. Blondie
Okay, so I'm starting off with an old one. But it makes me laugh fairly consistently so it gets the nod.

9. Pearls Before Swine
Was incredibly funny when it first came out, but has dropped off precipitously since then. If it stayed as funny as the first year's work, it'd be Top 5, for sure. Still good for a giggle now and then.

8. Hägar the Horrible
You'd think the jokes would get stale by now...

7. Herman
Funny, funny, funny one panel strip. And a very unique art style.

6. Penny Arcade
Everyone should know this one.

5. Garfield
Everyone DOES know this one. I read Garfield like crazy as a kid, and it's still pretty funny 10 years later. But talk about selling out...

4. Dilbert
This isn't a comic strip. It is a documentary (and I am living it).

3. FoxTrot
This should be everybody's favorite comic strip that is still in production. This, and #2 and #1 are in a class of their own when talking about funny comic strips. Plus, there are so many nerd in-jokes that I can't help but appreciate it.

2. The Far Side
I've read them all at least 4 times, and they still make me laugh. Best one-panel comic "strip" in existance.

1. Calvin & Hobbes
This is the pinnacle of the Comic strip. It is what all other comic strips aspire to be.

progressiveboink (fan site) puts it better than I ever could:
Hundreds of comic strips have been published in newspapers. The majority are terrible, and almost all the rest are mediocre. There have been maybe four or five good comic strips in the history of the world. So saying that Calvin and Hobbes is the best comic strip ever doesn't really hold a lot of weight.

And it's really a shame that it's so difficult to quantify this strip's greatness. I can confidently state that Calvin and Hobbes outclasses the rest of the comic strip world more than anything else has ever outclassed the rest of its medium. Sans this strip, the industry is characterized by guys sitting on rocks making stupid puns, a Family Circus kid misunderstanding the meaning of a word, or an overweight father playing golf while telling jokes such as I LIKE GOLF and GOLF IS HARD. It's a medium that doesn't really deserve something as good as Calvin and Hobbes, but it got it anyway, and the newspaper-reading world was made a better place by it.

Calvin and Hobbes ran from 1985 to 1995. Bill Watterson drew thousands of strips, and while I wish like hell that he would come back and draw more, it's probably best to reflect and be thankful for what he's done. Below we have showcased, in no particular order, some of our favorite Calvin and Hobbes strips of all time. If you love them as much as we do, let us know if you think there are any that we should have included. And if you missed out, well, hopefully we can give you some idea of why Mr. Watterson is our hero.

And, yes, I own all the books AND the $200 hardbound collection. The strip is just that good, people.

Concerts!

This thread is for discussing concerts that you have been to (recently, or even not-so recently if they were significantly awesome or terrible enough).

Last night I drove with my brother and dad to Saskatoon (the source of the name of Saskatoon berries, which are like blueberries on crack. They are sooooo good) to catch the Ozzy Osbourne and Rob Zombie concert. The concert was primarily for my brother, as he is 7 years older than me (and I am old, don't forget) and was really into Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Poison, etc... when he was a lad. I tagged along because I liked Rob Zombie back in highschool.

The concert opened with a group called In The Moment, which sucked. Hard. The chick singer just screamed into the mike, the guitar guys just headbanged and jammed on their guitars and the drummer slammed away like a 3 year old on a suger high. I couldn't stop laughing it was so pathetically awful. People actually listen to that shit? And enjoy? Reminded me of angst-ridden 13 year old males lamely trying to rebel.

Rob Zombie was fucking awesome. He rocked the house. He was the highlight of the show, jamming out Living Dead Girl and Dragula and a host of other hits. He had sexy zombie girls dancing on stage and two big screens showing awesome clips to accompany his songs (with lots of naked tits. awesome.). Zombie himself was very entertaining. Lots of fire.

*sigh* Ozzy. What a big disappointment. He was out of tune, out of synch, forgetting the lyrics and listless on stage. Ozzy is fading fast - he's getting too old for this shit. He couldn't remember what city he was in. If I could, I would have walked out after his second song (Crazy Train).

Why do rockers think playing lots of fast incoherent notes on a guitar for 22mins is cool?

So, gone to any cool concerts lately?

Top Ten Topics: TV Shows!

Time for another round of everybody's favorite topic!

Straying a bit from the video game theme of the last two topics, this week we will be listing our favorite TV shows, past or present. Comedies, dramas, comedramas - the range of possible choices is expansive! WARNING: Anyone listing a reality TV show as one of their favorite Top 10 shows will be instantly banned, and then I will come to your house and kick you in the balls is silly.

Can you believe wikipedia has a list? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_television_programs_by_name Craziness.

I like TV. So, it's time to present my...

..:: Top 10 List of Favorite TV Shows ::..

10. Law & Order
DUN DUHN duhduhduhDuh Duuuuhhn! This is a cool show. Of course, I'm lumping in the various spinoffs - SVU, CI, SUV, PSI, and whatever else - but they are all pretty much the same show, just different actors (hell, the main show seems to cycle through different actors every 4 seasons or so).

9. Criminal Minds
Sleeper hit of the 2005-2206 season, and for good reason, too. Follows the BAU unit of the FBI as they hunt down seriously screwed up in the head criminals. Stars Greg (from Dharma and Greg) and Inigo MontoyaMandy Patinkin. If you like criminal drama shows, be sure to catch this one. It's on Wednesday nights.

8. Corner Gas
Canadian sitcom filmed 45mins from my house! And it's funny (Canadians, as a people, are funny). It's won Canada's Gemini award for Best Comedy Series four years running (since it started) and has never had less that 1 million Canadian viewers for every new episode (to put that in perspective, Hockey Night in Canada gets around 1 million viewers). It's been syndicated for broadcast in the US just this year on some sort of Superstation based in Chicago, so watch it if you get the chance! (First scene ever: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Veu-Cm7aHMw (I own a Corner Gas shirt)).

7. Scrubs
Funny hospital comedy. Plenty of non-sensical moments, great characters and ends with a nice little life lesson.

6. Star Trek: The Next Generation
While better than the original series in many ways, it will never be as well known. Even so, TNG is the best incarnation of the Star Trek series ever to appear on TV. I miss this show.

5. Family Guy
I like non-sensical comedy, and this is pretty much the acme of non-sensical comedy.

4. House
House is such an asshole.

3. Arrested Development
Totally underated show. This show is filled with subtle jokes and humor to go along with the larger jokes and plotline. It also hits close to home, as I have a weird younger brother, a slacker older brother and a spoiled sister (with straight blond hair, too).

2. Whose Line Is It Anyways?
Now it's time for more Whose Line with Wayne Brady! *cheers* Ryan Stiles! *cheers* Colin Mochrie! *cheers* and some other guy who's not-quite-as-funny-as Wayne Brady, Ryan Stiles or Colin Mochrie but we need a fourth! *cheers*

Some of THE funniest moments on television have occured on this show. Youtube it up.

1. Simpsons
Was there every any doubt what would be #1? The Simpsons is comedy gold. Seasons 4-7 is Comedy Platinum. (Admittedly, seasons 11-present have been a little, well a lot, weak, but still). There's enough material here for a Simpsons channel.

Honorable mentions:
Family Feud
Flintstones
CSI
CSI: NY
Futurama
Robot Chicken
Just For Laughs: Gags
Frasier
Seinfeld
The Price Is Right

PS. CSI: Miami sucks.

Top Ten Topic: Top 10 N64 games

Apparently SNES is too old of a system for some of our members, so I'm jumping up a generation in this week's Top Ten. (I initially planned an NES Top 10, but decided against it due to the aforementioned youngness of the crowd.)

So I sat down to come up with my list and thought long and hard about what games I truly liked on the N64. I managed to come up with only four games. So I took a gander at Wikipedia's List of N64 Games, and managed to get 4 more. How very sad. I remember now why N64 was such a flop in my mind.

Without further ado, here is my

..:: Top 10 List of Favorite N64 games ::..

10. NHL '99
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NHL_'99
Yeah, it's pretty sad when NHL '99 graces a Top 10 list for any video game system. There just wasn't anything else out there that I liked more. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun game, but hardly your typical Top 10 material. It may just be that I'm Canadian and genetically hard-wired to love hockey (scientific fact).

9. Zelda: OoT
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda:_Ocarina_of_Time
Blah blah blah Best Game Evar. Whatever. It ISN'T the best game ever, in my opinion, but it was the closest thing you got to an epic RPG (and I use the term very loosely here) on the N64. The game was sorta fun to play.

8. Star Wars: Rogue Squadron
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Rogue_Squadron
Now we're getting to the real fun games. Rogue Squadron was a blast to play (way better than Star Fox for your blaster-space-shoot-em-ups). Hey, don't knock me. It won Best Action Computer Game of 1998. Flying your own X-Wing is every nerd's dream.

7. Perfect Dark
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perfect_Dark
It's a rare feat (lolgetit?) for a FPS console game to be fun for me, but Perfect Dark manages it. It's better than Halo, and I really don't have to say more than that.

6. Mario Tennis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Tennis_(Nintendo_64)
How does Nintendo make campy sports games with lame phsyics and cutesy characters so consistently fun? Whatever, Mario Tennis is a blast to play.

5. Star Wars Ep. 1 Racer
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Episode_I_Racer
Better than the movie. This is a very tight racing game. Apparently, this is the fifth best Star Wars game of all time (KotOR better be #1 - I'll have to check this out).

4. Mario Kart 64
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mario_Kart_64
A solid sequel to one of the SNES's best games. 4 player mode battles are still fun today. Oddly enough, when GameSpy had it's Best Game Ever contest, Mario Kart 64 beat out the original in the preliminaries, a rare occurance during that contest.

3. GoldenEye 007
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GoldenEye_007
Quite possibly the best console FPS ever. Excellent single-player campaign, fun split-screen multiplayer deathmatch using popular Bond characters, zoomable sniper rifles, context-sensitive hit locations (a pioneering innovation at the time), and REMOTE MINES (best weapon ever developed for a FPS). This game often ranks near the top of many Top 100 Video Games list.

2. Super Mario 64
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Mario_64
This game defined 3D platformers, and is still the best 3D platformer out there (at least, of any I've played.) Maybe SM Galaxy will knock this game off it's perch of best 3D platformer. We'll see...

1. Super Smash Bros.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Smash_Bros.
What a fucking clever idea. Also, Best Fighting Game Ever (well, except for maybe SSBM, but its the same series so it doesn't count).

P.S. Pikachu owns.

So while beefing out a Top 10 list was quite difficult for the N64, it still has some of the best games ever made (GoldenEye, Mario 64, SSB). I never played Banjo-Kerblooie or Majora's Mask, and Diddy Kong Racing was a lame and weak Mario Kart knockoff, so don't gripe to me about them.

Game and Review Submission Rules

Game and Review Submission Rules
The Game Section is designed to release and advertise your projects. Game projects should be of your own creation and should show some sort of general progress. The Game Section is limited to games that are produced by indie developers, that is, your non-commercial, 100% free game.

Any submission advertising a commercial game is NOT allowed.

The Two Types of Game Submissions Allowed:
Advertising submissions require at least 2 paragraphs, 4-5 sentences each, of information. You are also required to have at least 3 screenshots showing some form of in-game play.

Demo/Full Game submissions require at least 1 paragraph, 4-5 sentences long, explaining your project as well as at least 3 screenshots showing some form of in-game play.

Your game won't even go into the submission queue until 3 screens are loaded.

When writing the description, please try to be descriptive as possible about the game itself. Imagine that you were running your own website where you were SELLING the game, what would you put? It does not have to be an essay, but in general the description should be the best information available on the game.

You are allowed to use standard BBCode tags in textboxes.

Also consider using gamepages to split up your game information into categories.

Screenshots
The screenshots need to have variety - three screenshots of one location isn't counted as three screenshots. Title screens, splash screens, map art, or character art do not count toward your screenshot total (but are certainly allowed).

Your game has a screenshot gallery built into it. All you need to do is add the screenshots!
  • Accepted screenshots will be placed inside your game's gallery.
  • You can later remove screenshots, but you will be unable to edit them.
  • We only support JPEG and PNG screenshots. GIFs, BMPs and others are not allowed.
  • Pornographic material is NOT allowed.

Downloads
Game downloads below 20 MB are accepted so long as it follows the Terms of Service. Games greater than that are up to RMN staff discretion (most are accepted).

Please submit the entire game, and not just the rpg_rt.exe or game.exe. That is not the game. For example, in RM2k3, ZIP the entire game folder and submit that zip file. In RMXP, try using the gamedisc/installer.

Submissions consisting solely the aforementioned .exe files will be denied.

Game Download submissions are for games. They are not your personal filespace on the internet. Use your Locker for that.

You cannot abuse the game download update feature to artificially anchor your game on the front page.

Gaming the system so that your game is constantly on the frontpage is against the rules. (a.k.a. The Davenport Rule - named after the first egregious offender). People caught abusing this system with their game download will have their game forcibly removed from the frontpage. Repeat offenses will lead to the game being removed from RMN.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is not allowed and any member caught plagiarizing without the permission of the original author will be subject to discipline from the site staff. Members caught plagiarising will be given the opportunity to defend their actions to the staff, but if plagiarism is evident beyond a doubt, that member will be banned.

As far as graphics go, there is some leeway. Using rips are common practice. So long as you do not claim someone elses graphics are your own, it is not considered plagiarism at this site.

Reviews
You have the ability to submit reviews for games featured on RMN. A one-liner does not constitute a review. One-liners are for the comments section.

You can only review games that have an available download.

It is required that you have played the game you are reviewing. If possible you should play the game to completion. If you are unable or unwilling to complete a game but feel compelled to review it you must state how long you played and the reason you stopped playing.

You may rate the game and give it a score ranging between 0.5 and 5.0 stars. You may also choose not to give a score. Be prepared to justify your rating with the content of your review. If you give an exceedingly low score you are expected to describe the game's flaws in detail. Similarly if you feel the game deserves a high score you must adequately justify this viewpoint.

You must write at least two paragraphs, 4-5 sentences long. Be prepared to discuss gameplay, graphics, sound, or anything else relevant to the game you are reviewing.

You are expected to maintain a certain level of professionalism and maturity in writing a review. Personal insults, name-calling, or other nonsense will not be tolerated. As always, proper spelling and grammar are expected.

If you feel you do not have enough content to make a solid review you should consider simply posting your thoughts on the gamepage comments or sending a message directly to the creator.

All reviews are evaluated by staff before they are accepted and appear on the site. The staff may deny your review if we feel it does not meet the site's standards. Typically when this is done you will be informed of what changes need to be made before the review can be accepted.

Disclaimer
Even should you meet the minimum requirements as outlined above, the staff reserves the right to deny any submission to the site.
