http://rmncast.podbean.com/

RMNCast: Episode 6 exclusively covers Release Something V, an event where amateur game-makers release their current projects (whether finished or not) at RPGMaker.net. Hosts Brandon Abley, Matt “McDohl”, and Legion/Max McGee discuss almost 30 game releases!

Podcast is late because of complications with various hosts, technical difficulties, and my moving to a new apartment. But they are always late, aren't they?

EDIT: It is actually uploaded now :(

Video Game Purchases

This is a topic where you pop in and say which game you bought and say something about it. I think a lot of us buy games that don't have threads and it would be nice to have a topic where we can still make a post about it. This could also serve as a general shopping news/tips thread.

I just bought Baroque for Wii. It was $7.99. I do not know if it will be good or not, but the reviews all say that it is a little weird and interesting et cetera, so I am looking forward to it. It is an Atlus game and is a dungeon crawler with an unusual atmosphere. I don't really know anything about it, other than reviews said that it "is not for everyone" but did not say "it is bad". It was only the cost of a rental after all!

I also bought Spectral Force 3. I don't know why. Idea Factory games are horrible and I buy so many of them. I think I might appreciate their persistence or something? Anyway, it is a tactical J-RPG for XBox 360 that is not supposed to be very good. Who knows, though - sometimes those sorts of games end up being your favorite game ever made.

I bought these at Gamefly - they have an awesome year-end sale every year where they put pre-played games on clearance. The price is like half of what Gamestop charges (Baroque is $18 used and Spectral Force 3 is $40 used at GS). They have some headlining deals such as Devil May Cry 4 for $12.99 (!!!), Ninja Gaiden 2 for $14.99 (!!!), and Grand Theft Auto 4 for $19.99 (!!!). Like seriously guys check it out before the sale ends (new year). You might even be able to trade your games back to Gamestop for a profit <3

RMNCast Logo

Could someone please make an RMNCast logo. We would appreciate it very much. One of us on staff could make one, but I know there are people in the community that make really awesome logos for things like this and would do a better one.

The specifications are pretty simple:

  • It must be square
  • It must look good at 300-500 pixels for iTunes/Windows Media Player
  • It must look good at 144x144 pixels for standard RSS feeds/generic MP3 players

I don't care what it looks like as long as it is cool!

This is what RMN3 looks like if you are curious:

I am moving this to requests <3

Suikoden on sale for $5.99

Last time I checked, retail disks for the original Suikdoen cost several hundred dollars. When I heard that it was available on the Playstation Store for $5.99, I thought it would be news worth sharing.

If you haven't played Suikoden, it is a classic RPG that was released on the Playstation early into its life-cycle. It may have been the first meaty RPG available on the console. It was a bit of a throwback when it came out, because it eschewed new 3D technology in favor of using the extra horsepower to output high-resolution 2D art. The result is a game that has aged decidedly better than, say, the battle scenes in Wild Arms. It's pretty good, and a fan-favorite as well as a coveted collector's item.

Thoughts? I anyone getting or have this? I tried to find it on the store today (it's only $6!), but couldn't.

Also, the NA box art is considered by some to be a masterpiece. It's no Mega Man, but it's not too shabby either:

RMNCast 6 Design Topic: Turn-based and Active Gameplay

I had a podcast idea where I might post the game design topic in advance on this forum. When we record the podcast, we will give a rundown on community discussion as well as our thoughts. Let's try it! This is the topic for RMNCast 6, which is coming in two weeks. RMNcast 5 is recorded but unedited and will be up in a few days.

The current topic is comparing turn-based gameplay to active gameplay. I am not talking exclusively about RPGs. All game design types have to fall somewhere in between: either you are taking action in real time (such as in Call of Duty), you are taking turns (such as in Dragon Quest), or you are somewhere in between (such as in Medieval). What are your guys' thoughts and preferences on this issue? Questions to consider when posting:

1. Which do you prefer? Do you like to strategize and take your time, or do you like to shoot terrorists in the crotch while things blow up around you? Or do you prefer hybrid systems such as most Final Fantasy games?

2. Which game has your very favorite implementation of turn-based or action gameplay?

3. Is there a style you hate? Some people get anxious and bored in turn-based games. On the flip side, some people get bored if they don't have time to make strategies.

4. Which game's implementation of turn-based or action gameplay do you hate?

5. Even in styles you prefer, do you have boundaries? Many people like turn-based games, but don't have the patience for two-hour-long turns in the late stages of Civilization 4. Or, some people like action games but can't keep up with the frantic pace of Wipeout.

As for myself . . .

I prefer turn-based games. I love technical action games (Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden for example), but my favorite titles are always turn-based number-crunchers with lots of statistics and lots of strategy.

Shin Megami Tensei has one of my favorite gameplay mechanics of any video game, because it is a turn-based game that places huge importance on each action. If an enemy is weak against fire, and you choose fire, you get an extra turn. If he absorbs fire, your turn ends immediately and the rest of your party members get pummeled for your stupidity. It's a slow, methodical game design, but every action you take in every battle has significance. I don't get bored because I need to choose each action carefully.

I have high tolerance for games regardless of how fast or slow they move. I can usually appreciate a well-made game for what it is and what the designer intended. With few exceptions, I feel like I am part of every publisher's core demographic.

This means I do not have boundaries really. As long as I go into Civilization expecting to spend an hour on a turn, I don't mind doing it. Likewise, I enjoy intense shooters as long as it is well-designed.

Let me know your thoughts! RMNCast is a community podcast and it would be great to have community voices about these sorts of topics.

[COMPLETE GAME - 100% Original Assets] Dragoon Legends Part 1

Dragoon Legends Part 1 Version 0.96 (Beta)

Game Page: http://www.rpgmaker.net/games/848
Download URL: http://www.rpgmaker.net/games/848/downloads/794/

This is a great way to start up a game.

1. Introduction

Dragoon Legends is an amateur Role Playing Game with 100% original art assets made by Polish community member Kazukeri. I (Brandon Abley) had helped him with the POlish translation and wrote the English script, and also wrote an original soundtrack for the game, so I was heavily involved with him through production. He sent me a series of betas as he worked through the project.

Unfortunately, he disappeared in June 2007 after sending me this almost complete beta. He never replied to any of my emails or went online after that and never updated his website. I have tried to contact him several times and have been unable to. Ironically, his last blog post title is: "I'm Alive!", which I am legitimately in question of.

So, I thought that since this is an excellent amateur game, and also because I put a lot of work into it myself, I should release it in his stead.

THIS IS A BETA. It is not perfect. Save often because it might crash occassionally. Everything is an almost-complete rough draft, including the game mechanics, script, and music. It is 100% playable though and I have gone through the entire thing a couple of times. It is pretty fun!

Also this game contains an original soundtrack by me and I think there are a couple people at the site interested in that. The music, like the game, is in draft.

I wrote this game's English script. This is an example of my award-winning writing.

2. Game

This is an extremely traditional role-playing game in the Japanese style. It should be pretty straightforward. There is a game manual included which, while pretty sparse, tells you which buttons to push.

Key functions are as follows:

A: Action
S: Cancel, Run
Q: Menu

F5: Windowed Mode
F6: Fullscreen Mode

Esc: Close Program

DO NOT PRESS ESC UNLESS YOU WANT TO CLOSE TO PROGRAM. TRY VERY HARD NOT TO PRESS IT. There is no prompt and the game will close instantly. I have quit the game many times pressing Esc thinking it might open the menu.

The combat system is very much modelled after Chrono Trigger.

3. Credits

Kazukeri:
Game, Art, Programming, Direction, Story, Translation from Polish

Brandon Abley:
Original Soundtrack, Translation from Polish, English Script

The hairstyles however are very much modelled after Kingdom Hearts!

4. Further Info

There is more info about this game at the following sites:
www.rpgmaker.net (community site)
www.brandonabley.com (my website)
http://reonsoft.awardspace.com/ (Kazukeri's dead blog)

This is one of the only games at RMN with particle effects (even though they are fairly crude).

More about this download:

So years ago my friend Kazukeri was working on an RPG called Dragoon Legends. It was nothing spectacular in terms of concept or whatever, but a heartfelt and pretty fun amateur game that was coded from scratch and had original graphics etc.

So I wrote the soundtrack for the game.

And . . . Kazukeri disappeared! He never replied to my emails after sending me the completed demo of the game and all that. He never updated his website. I am legitimately afraid that he has died.

It has been over a year and I am thinking of just posting his game for you guys to play! I wrote the music after all and I am the only person in the world who I think has it. The last update on his blog was July 2007.

The texturing on the buildings is very good in my opinion.

PS: Dragoon Legends is a stupid name for a game but it's not my game so whatever :(
