Naming your characters

Does anyone else get as caught up with this as I do? I seriously spend days with trying to decide names for characters in the back of my head.

And I'm not talking about naming your characters with any storyline significance. I usually find that it's easier to work backwards, by naming your character, and go and write about why he's named that.

I usually base naming a character on sheer aesthetics. Does it sound cool? Does it roll off the tongue smoothly? If I were to sign a receipt with this name, could I whip up a badass signature for myself? I don't know why, but this sort of stuff is important to me when naming a character. It's like naming your child, except you don't want to name it after any of your relatives or friends.

I've found it's alot easier for me to name villains and/or supporting characters than it is to name the leading characters. Villains you can come up with gritty, nonsensical names, but with a main character, you need something you can get used to calling yourself. Something simple, but sweet. Usually one-three syllables.. any more, and you get something too contrived, I think.

Female characters tend to be easier to name than male characters, in my experience. It's alot easier to name a female character after something aesthetically pleasing and not have it sound gay.

I'm thinking a good hero's name is Ezra. Am I crazy? Because I'm using it right now.

There's no wrong or right answer here. I get really stuck on thinking of interesting and fitting names. How about you all?

Let's discuss music genres.

Classifying music is too difficult. It's better to compare bands to other bands than trying to make up some obscure word to describe them. That's my opinion.
But I'm all for genres.. they are a pretty interesting way of describing music without saying anything about the instrumentation or theme of the music.

Check it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_music_genres

From reading this, there's WAY too many types of metal.
most pretentious genre names i've heard: "funkcore", "post-hardcore", "opera metal", "nintendocore"

In my opinion.. genres come in 2 different pieces: The attribute, and the format. The attribute word is a descriptive word that explains how the music 'feels' without dominating the style of music.. usually by ethic and lyrical theme. The format word is what dictates the style and background of the music.. usually by guitar tones, rhythms, and vocal technique.

Attribute words: "core", "black", "doom", "electro", "post", "emo", etc.
Format words: "rock", "metal", "hardcore", "punk", "ska", etc.

There's some downright funny genre names, too. "Crack rock", "Nintendocore", "Stoner metal". I love it.

so.. what do you guys think of music genres? I think they're pretentious wastes of time, but they're pretty helpful sometimes.

my band!!!

this is my band, called Intimachine. i play guitar and share singing duties.
myspace is terrible, but it's awesome for promoting music:

these recordings are about a year old, and pretty dated. but they have a few good moments.
thanks for listening!

Hello.

Hello! I ah, I don't know quite how to begin. I go under the alias "narcodis" for pretty much everything these days. However, I used to frequent this community in long days past, under the nick "DragonShadow". Just typing that gave me chills -- it's literally been at least 5 or 6 years since I've gone by that. Also, it's a goddamn stupid name to go by, I must've been 13 when I coined that.

It's been a real long time since I've invested any time into RPG Maker. I used to be way into it several years ago... uhm. Started out with RPG95, moved on to RM2k, and kind of fell out of it soon after. I dunno. I enjoyed it alot, but having your harddrive wipe your precious project (twice) really demotivates you.

Anyway, I started lurking some old IRC channels I used to frequent late tonight and stumbled across this website. I don't know how much I'll be in to crafting my own RPG gems, but I'd sure be interested in playing a few!
Something about me, eh? Well, I live in Utah, and if you don't own a map, that's part of the united states. I've lived here for 13 goddamn years of my life. My main interests include music and games. Sometimes I like to draw, often times I like to write. but I do enjoy putting together harmonies and beats for the most part.

I hella recognize some familiar faces (or names, if you will). I'm not going to say I was a keystone in the RPGMaker community back in the day. I was one of those douchebags who mainly idled in IRC channels and talked shit on people I didn't know, people I did know, people who no one knew, and people that might've been imaginary. so I won't be offended if no one remembers! Hit me up if you recognize me!

Pretty much, I'm bored on the internet and thought I'd see what this scene was up to these days. I'll be trolling your forums and IRC channels for a while.

love
