NICKAD'S PROFILE

I like to smell people :).
I have an absurd fashion of littering my game creations with unnecessary light-maps and overlays.
I am fond of RPGs and first-person shooters, and have an astounding joy for horror games.

Pixels

Pixels, pixels, pixels.

(A mock-up of a game I was planning for a Halloween contest, but never got around to actually doing anything with it).

(Something I did in my spare time a while ago).

(A DS game mock-up from AGES ago).

(Some NES sprites I attempted a long time ago. Failed miserably :( ).

(Some test tiles for the Game Chill competition).

Research in games.

Now - Not everyone does, but it can be quite useful and positive for a game that does this: Research. Do you guys research certain things to implement into your own games? This can include things such as researching the general features and layout of a specific type of environment (such as a city, etc) to aid you in creating a similar area in your game that feels like the said environment; researching the features of specific weapons and items to implement into your game; or simply researching various design elements used in other games to give yourself inspiration, etc. The list goes on.
I, personally, am constantly researching various level-design aspects for my game, as I try and make the areas in my game feel realistic (even if they aren't realistic to begin with). I usually just browse images of the specific area, taking note of how it is constructed, the objects that are present, and the general layout. I also do a little bit of research into puzzles and the like, and see how they would work in a real-life situation.

So - The question being: Do you research specific aspects for your own game? If so, what elements have you researched, and has it been positive towards your game-making (or game in general)?

Notes:
This is an old game, so don't take it as my current standards as well as this being my first attempts of capturing an atmosphere.
Also, please be wary that the dialogue is a little off, or may not make sense (I haven't had time to proof-read it).
If you find any errors, don't hesitate to bring them up and I will attempt to fix them.
Most of this is unfinished as I don't have plans to continue this, but I hope you can enjoy it all the same!

Light Map Dilema!

I have a dilema!
I would also like to get some advice as to how to create a working Light Map. I know already how to make the effect itself, but how to actually make it work is the problem. I currently am not sure on how to do it. So far, I have tried taking a screenshot of the map in x1, and then using layers in Gimp to create the effect, yet, when I import it into RM2K3, it says the image is not the right size (either it's too big or too small) ???. Does anyone know a method that works? And how would I go about doing it? Sorry if I have worded the question badly :-[.

Hello :)

Well, I've been wandering around here long enough... I've decided that I should introduce myself!
My username says I'm nickad, but you can call me Nick (don't ask about the username, it's a long story).
I come for Australia ;D.
I like RPG's, and First-Person Shooters. I'm also making something in RPG MAKER 2003 ;).
I've had experience in RPG MAKER, and have made various games that never actually got anywhere (they basically improved my RPG MAKER knowledge).
I think that's most of what I was going to put in here.
I hope to post here more frequently and become a proper member here :).

Project Origin

Not sure if a topic has been made on this :-\.

(Random Image for reference)

So, as most people know, the new shooter by Monolith called 'Project Origin', in which continues the storyling to it's previous shooter titles, F.E.A.R., but is at the same time, a new game, coming out this year, and I can't wait XD.
We all know that there will be (hopefully) a lot more scarier scenes, Alma, scarier monsters, Alma, new weapons, Alma, and improved and friendly A.I :D.
To think this was made in 2004... Look at the graphics, they're amazing.
Hopefully we can discuss on this, and any of the other previous Monolith titles as well.
