Getting emotion from 2d characters

Animated sprites mixed with good pacing, dialogue and music would do the trick. I don't think it's just a product of one single element. Face sets showing expressions would be nice too of course. It's pretty simple really, whatever is used in other mediums to create emotion works in a 2D game too.

@Giznads, That is unbelievably atmospheric and moody. Gorgeous shot. I really need to try your demo. The setting already sounds right up my alleys.

@Momeka, I've been following your stuff on Reddit (It's on reddit right?) Really love the colour palette and everything I've seen so far. The mini-map is a god send. I've been playing Elminage Gothic (a similar style dungeon crawler) for the past year or so and while the game is really great, the map function is very limited (it's literally limited use item) Once I modded the game to have unlimited maps, the game became instantly 100x more playable and fun.

Oh yeah, might as well drop a screenshot of my own. The development of my game has stretched beyond what I could've ever expected. (I thought this would have been done by last christmas already) But I guess better late than never. I just have to make sure it doesn't slip to that never category.

@punkitt, Your screenshots always look great, but I absolutely love that lily pad area! Bee boy is an incredible design too. There are a lot of indie games coming these days with "simplistic" art styles, but I like yours more than the big majority of them because there's still obviously tons of detail and effort in the graphics.

@Decky, very solid mapping. These screens give me very warm RPG Maker nostalgia.

@EFFERVESCEWARE, the pink message box might be a bit too light to my liking. The brightness is close to the same as text's brightness level, so it makes it a bit hard to read. Well not hard, but harder than necessary.

@MackValentine, really like the UI design. Black borders especially. Great job!

@MaisterRabbit, very atmospheric. I'm interested for sure. Hard to say much more as you can't see much :D

Wow, these screens are beautiful! Would love to see more.

Thanks! I don't want to flood this topic with screenshots, but you can check more screens on the gamepage Fear & Hunger 2: Termina

KumoriCloudGames, that's a wild art style for sure. The Mage character is my favourite. Looks like a cool person.

Momeka, I've been seeing these screens of yours for a while now. Everything's looking so well put together. Very professional look and feel. The menu continues the same trend. The colour palette especially is cool.

Toaster Team, I'm not entirely sure what's happening here but looks cool regardless... actually what's the story here?

AshleyWasHere, Really nostalgic seeing rm2k's RTP in good use. I love all the original tweaks.

Few screens of my own

@Punkitt, really impressive title screen! I love the tone. Btw, have you played Adventures of Lolo games? (I'm a huge fan of them) I kinda get those vibes. Although it might just be that rolley ball character.

@Deckiller, might be ez puzzle, but I don't get it lol. I like the visuals though! The dungeons especially looks awesome!

@Bandito, that kinda looks like early Dragon Quest town in both good and the bad. If that's what you're going for, fair enough, but otherwise I'd agree with Cap_H in that it could be condensed by a lot! I do like the variety and individual detail you've put to the houses though.

@Pyramid_Head, I like how well everything fits together. Love the tone of it all too.

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

@Punk_Kricket, the early SMT games are really great! I adore the first Shin Megami Tensei on SNES. There's something in that game that has me hooked everytime I play it, more-so than later SMT games for some reason. I think it's partly because of the very quick pace you move around and in and out of battles.

I have yet to try the initial Megami Tensei series on NES. I heard those are brutal to the point of ridiculous frustration, so I might just skip them altogether.

The Featured Game Thread

Oh my. Thank you for the front-page feature! This came out of nowhere! I need to start paying more attention to how my game pages look if stuff like this is possible :O

So... Final Fantasy XVI anyone?

Yeah considering I don't even own a television, I most likely won't be getting a PS5 anytime soon either. New console games are becoming more and more available on PC too, so that might be just as good way to go about playing these games.

PS4 is worth it because of Bloodborne alone imo, but I guess that's just my personal bias. There are great jRPGs around too. Persona 5 felt like it perfected the turn-based battle system imo. Dragon Quest XI was very solid traditional jRPG and I've just recently gained a new love for Yakuza games after dismissing them since playing the first one on PS2 ages ago. Despite them looking like simple brawlers, they are very much jRPGs at their core and this is only made more clear with the upcoming sequel that has turn-based combat system too.

On topic, I heard FF16 will be M-rated, which is absolutely crazy. I didn't think the mainline series would ever go there. The trailer does give a darker look sure, but still a surprise. Also the director of the game is a huge Matsuno fanboy, so Ivalice vibes are probably going to be there.

So... Final Fantasy XVI anyone?

What's everyone's opinion about the game so far?

The game was revealed a while ago and I haven't been able to get it out of my head since. Initially I was a little bit disappointed with the medieval approach, because I've grown to really like the more out-there-pseudo-futuristic worlds later Final Fantasies are known for and I was looking forward to seeing what Square came up with next. Then when the game looked a lot like many other darker fantasy titles from past 6 years or so, I was a bit bummed.

I knew I was going to like the game regardless though, because there has yet to be a mainline entry I didn't like. Since the reveal, the game has been in the back of my head and it has really grown on me. My disappointment has definitely turned into hype.
