I liked the game, maybe because at this point the rape backstory /is/ such a common trope to this genre to the point I no longer blink twice. Still your points are all valid and well spoken; as an underlying conflict the sexual abuse doesn't contribute much, as its really only effective use IMHO is to shape the chase sequence aspect as it currently is. I don't think the black figure would have been as imposing if it were a reflection of Mari grieving over a loss in real life or some other alternative trauma that's been discussed here. :V
