MotW: In-Depth Playthrough

Man I haven't heard that song in years. Thanks for reminding me seacliff.

Good observations NS. While a lot of ppl enjoy that section of the game for the characterization of Cade, Gabriell and Evrind and expansion of the lore I think it goes on for too long. It almost feels like you're playing a different game at that point. It was hard to work gameplay sections into that area although you had some good ideas.

I also like the Boreal section and think it's much better paced. The Ice Temple was a fun dungeon to make.

So... IGMC 2015

If it makes you feel better I really enjoyed Ink Travelers. It made it into the top 20. Considering how many great entries there were that is still a huge accomplishment.

I replayed and avoided the bug, actually I should ask what terminology do we use for a bug that only happens under certain situations?

In the QA sphere if you encounter a major bug you test to see if it's Reproducible. Sometimes you put a % like a 100% if the bug was always encountered in your playtests or 50% if only encountered in half of them. You can also say Always or Sometimes or Random.

I also fortunately didn't encounter the bug although at least one other judge mentioned the game was buggy for them. Still it scored high enough to keep it in the running.

MotW: In-Depth Playthrough

I'd definitely put Eagle's Path in the bottom list of my dungeons. It's one of the few dungeons that focuses almost entirely on twitch gameplay (fast reaction time and hand eye coordination) over logic puzzles. Even though some fans appreciate the variety of gameplay in MotW since it keeps them guessing, I have had a lot of complaints from older fans that were unable to complete these sections. I also don't think the gameplay sections in Eagle's Path are very fun.

That lemon launcher gag is a reference to a Darkwing Duck episode we must have watched around the time development. I totally forgot about it so it made me chuckle when I clicked that screenshot.

If the player was allowed to save anywhere, particularly in the original version of MotW, it would cause all kinds of issues. Saving and loading a map would put events back to their starting locations which could cause all kinds of problems; including progression blocks. The game would have to be carefully designed and tested around allowing the player to save anywhere which with RPG Maker would probably be more effort than it's worth.

There's an easter egg in Eagle's Path. If you shoot all the frogs, you'll be cursed for the duration of your time on that map to listen to a sped up version of the Dican boss theme!

Thanks for more commentary NeverSilent. Always fun to read. Pretty much the only reason I check this site anymore.

You mentioned you enjoyed the little backstory on how Shroud and Stoic met. I actually drew a short comic of their meeting called "Kindred Spirits" that Volrath also helped write. I'm not sure if the comic is up anywhere but MOTWFan actually did a 3d animation of the comic which is even better!

Hi i have been playing this game for around i would say 3 to 4 hours anyway i am level 11 for both people in my party anyway I'm a little worried about something and that is that i read this http://solest.org/guides/motw/the_darklord/

Yea that guide is outdated. There are skills all the way up through level 50. The other guides are more uptodate but we don't have one that goes past arc 4. It would be super cool if someone made a complete walkthrough someday ;)

Game developers that don't... like making games...?

Having worked at a small studio for 3 years I could tell you that most people there were interested in games. If they weren't, they wouldn't be working at a game studio. Game developers are overworked and underpaid.

That said, you're not going to be passionate about every project you work on. Most of the games I worked on were games I would never play myself but were 3rd party contracts we had to fulfill to keep in business to make the games we WANTED to make. I worked on some really shitty mobile games for EA and Zynga that I wouldn't recommend anyone play.

Unfortunately, things went south at that studio once we tried to enter the freemium market. After people start getting laid off, a few of them stayed in the industry while others went to work in less insane ones. Since I got laid off, I've become an indie developer and freelancer and I'm much happier for it.

- I'll just say this the way I see it: That part about Kovak just allowing Shroud and Stoic to search through his mansion is one of the few plot points in the game that make no sense at all. Usually, Kovak is very secretive about his work, and even if he underestimates the heroes, there is no reason why he should invite them into his house, let alone leave incriminating materials in rooms they could possibly access. And Vec never even states a reason for letting the heroes in, such as Kovak wanting to prevent damage to his home that might be done if they break in. Also, the layout of the dungeon does not present any way to access Kovak's private room (where he currently resides). So if there is some (secret?) way to get there, why doesn't Kovak have everything that could be used against him hidden there?

Originally there was another scene where Kovak mentions that the mansion security will take care of Shroud/Stoic. The original design had Golems that would attack the players. I can't quite remember why we removed them. It's possible I just didn't want to work on more battles for arc 2. As it is, the dungeon doesn't make much sense.

Interesting factoid: Kovak's Mansion was mostly designed by Volrath. I designed the puzzles where Shroud levitates pots to activate switches and Stoic bullrushes the doors but the word puzzles and layout were Volrath.
