Story vs Combat Mode

Maybe I can have a Custom Mode? Then you could tick which options you'd like. Weaker enemies or less encounters or both. That might be interesting. I'm sure I could think of other gameplay option as well.

Thanks NS :)

What are you thinking about right now?

I hate it when people do this. Why not put something interesting at the very beginning to make me care instead of falling back on "it gets better, don't worry"? There have been so many games that have tried this and ultimately failed to deliver anything more than "it's a game, play it". If you know you have the ability and time to revise something to make it better, why not do it? Because let's face it, I've only got so many hours a day to devote to playing a game, and if I'm not gripped early, why bother putting more time into it?

I agree as well and I made the game! If you don't like the initial part of the game then you're probably not going to like it later. I think what NS means is that we introduce the overarching story around arc 2-3 that carries throughout the game. But if we just skipped that first arc would you be as invested? Probably not because you wouldn't really care much about the characters. The first arc gives you time to see what motivates Shroud and Stoic and how they interact with each other and the people around them. It introduces the world and some of the lore. It also introduces most of the core combat mechanics and design philosophy of the game. So if you're not buying into any of this why continue?

It's something we've struggled with for sure. I feel like if you don't have a good hook early on then you're probably going to lose a lot of people. A lot of great shows and books do this though. I'm watching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and a lot of the early episodes are just focused on character and world building. The overarching plot doesn't kick in till a few episodes later and then it's mixed in with one-offs. If you don't like the one-offs I'm not sure I'd recommend watching the show because then you're probably not that interested in the world and characters.

Some shows are just instantly gripping though like Attack on Titan (Been watching a lot of anime lately) or Death Note. I guess it depends on the pacing you want to use. I actually like a slow burner because it can be pretty satisfying. But if I'm not buying into a show or game early on then I don't continue it. We're in an age where there are just too many options to waste our time on something we don't feel drawn to continue.

Master of the Wind

Cool what made you decide to pick it up again? Looking forward to the review!

X-Noir

The bug was fixed a few weeks ago. I've been waiting on our artist to finish the mockup desktop background we were going to us for the credits sequence. If he doesn't finish it by this weekend I'll throw up a version with the bug fix so people can progress.

Thanks for being patient.

Unraveled: Tale of the Shipbreaker's Daughter

Yea I think it's true what they say about work expanding to the time available. Anyway congrats on crafting such an amazing experience! I plan on playing through it again with a more critical eye so I can write up a review.

Unraveled: Tale of the Shipbreaker's Daughter

This game makes my heart stir. I didn't think anything could top Oneshot but congratulations on proving me wrong.

How many artists do you have on your team? I'm quite amazed you were able to complete all these gorgeous environments in the span of a month. It took us several months to complete Labyrinthine Dreams and those areas weren't nearly as detailed as these!

Summer Review Jam! (week 9 space'd)

Congrats nhubi. Well deserved. I'm a bit ashamed I didn't review a game this week. I'll have to make up for it.

Mirror Boy

Running windows 7 /w a monitor resolution of 1920x1080 although I was running the game at 1280x800. I had selected Windowed but it full screened. Also I was running the 64bit version if that matters.

Mirror Boy

This looks excellent. I'm going to try this out right now.

EDIT: Alright I think I've played enough to get the gist. Here's some feedback:

-Lots of artifacts around the sprites/tiles in the game. It's pretty noticeable on the mirror right way.
-I'd remove those grids if possible. They look funky.
-My biggest problem with the game right now is the hit detection seems off on a lot of things. When I move towards a ball it sometimes hits me even though I deflected it. This happens A LOT. Also many times I thought I was outside the hit detection of the spike traps but I would still get hit. I think this is the biggest problem with the game right now.

In general though I liked the game. The levels I played were clever and deflecting the ball into enemies and crystals blocking your way was fun. I was just getting too frustrated with getting hit by things I felt shouldn't have hit me.

Fundamental RPGology

An episode of Retronauts literally just came out that discusses RPG battle systems. Specifically, JRPG battle systems which it seems this contest is focused on. It covers the early Dragon Quest games and goes up to modern RPGs. Might help get your creative juices flowing hearing more about the combat systems that are already out there.
