Fatalism theme incorporated into the structure of the game itself?

I am planning a horror game where the main character does increasingly more desperate and despicable things for self-preservation. As the story is quite fatalistic, and I am all about incorporating metaphors into my game design, would it make more sense for the player to have literally no other choice than "kill this person" in a given scenario as opposed to simply showing these sorts of actions of the main character in cut scenes?

The player character in my game is more of a threat to others than others are to him (sort of). The player has to complete the given actions to advance, and it would be written in such a way that would convey the sense that the character believes he has no other choice than to do this stuff.

Anyway, I guess I'm wondering if this sounds like an interesting/plausible thing to implement?

Horror Design

I do like the visuals of games like Silent Hill and Forbidden Siren 1 & 2, especially the character design. However I don't particularly find gorewalls and rusty prison cells that interesting aesthetically. I much prefer the visual styles of David Lynch, Dario Argento, Stuart Gordon/Brian Yuzna and John Carpenter, early Tim Burton stuff, and, game-wise - Deadly Premonition and D2, Clock Tower (which is based on Argento's 1985 film Phenomena) and also Grim Fandango although obviously it is not really a horror game. Lots of colour, jazzy tunes/80s synth, domestic sub/urban settings and goofy characters... they are definitely the qualities I prize most in a horror, as opposed to cold blue lighting, abandoned hospitals, masks, dolls, little spooky children... also, not a fan of jump scares although I appreciate the cultural value of having an actual cat suddenly jump out from nowhere.

SO... I am really curious as to what you all find appealing in horror games/films (if at all). What do you find unsettling or frightening? Conversely, what do you find laughable and unthreatening?

[RMVX ACE] Using panoramas or pictures as the entire map

I am wondering if it is possible to use panoramas/pictures as a stationary background, and have an invisible tileset over the top that would allow the character to walk around/also set up boundaries in appropriate spots...? I am used to rm2k3 chipsets and when I recently bought VX Ace and opened up the tilesets I nearly crapped my pants. Also the specific idea in my brain is that I want an image of a large house for the entire map ... although I just thought maybe I could put the picture of just the house on a grass tileset, or something...

... Sorry for my rambling, I am a bona fide novice - I'm not even sure if tilesets/chipsets are the same thing, or just different lingo for different engines.

Anyway, any help would be very much appreciated!

cheesy arts (concept art for horror/fantasy game)

(edited as of 4th Jan - cleaned up thread so it focuses on one project rather than a few other side projects as well - trying to reduce mental clutter)

The purpose of this thread is to show the concept art I've made for a horror/fantasy RPG I'm planning. I don't have any actual GAME to show in a game page yet, so for now I'll stick with this thread.

The game is set in two realms - a modern day (or thereabouts...) human world & a low fantasy/sci-fi moon world. Two men dream of each other going about their daily business when they sleep, and are connected to each other via a mysterious blue sphere.

I already had two separate stories with similar themes & characters, but have decided to merge them after struggling to come up with any gameplay ideas for what was supposed to be a straightforward adventure/horror game... but that seemed boring (and I was not confident I could pull it off) so I'm going with weird RPG mash-up with psychological horror elements instead.

Anyway, the art:

Hi!

I've been lurking here for around two years now, but I didn't want to actually join until I had some amount of work (art mainly) to show off. I mean that's basically the only game making skill I have right now; I used rm2k/rm2k3 like at least over five or six years ago when I was a highschooler but nothing ever came of that (except excessive noobishness).

Anyways, I love this place, and I'm excited to finally be a member.
