THATBENNYGUY'S PROFILE

I am CashmereCat now.

~~~
Twisted baubles replace my brain and I am toxic yet nice. There's a lot to me, but also not a lot going on up there, they say. PM me because I love attention, I do interviews, I do reviews, I do stuff. Here for the long haul. Gotta hustle.
I'm working on whatever I'm working on, and I love RPG Maker games that aren't traditional RPGs. Puzzlers, interactive stories, but nothing too abstract that'll weird me out. Just give me a polished gem and I'll stare at it for days, marveling at the way the light reflects just right, inner inflections, potato top pie.
I want to make games with you.
Are there any writing classes online?
I was wondering if anyone knew or could make any recommendation about if there are any online writing courses that are worth my time. I would like one that did not focus on the construction of plot, story and characters, but rather how to structure sentences properly and how to make your English more of a pleasure to read. I know that when I write for this forum or my university, I find myself making the same mistakes again and again, even if I'm not sure what they are. For instance, I've heard that ending a sentence in a preposition is bad. I have also heard some comments about my own writing (e.g. that I use too many commas, or structure my sentences weirdly). I'm not exactly sure how to remedy that, but I would like to know if there are any forums or online courses that will help make my writing more readable. I imagine there may be some kind of service where I can send in a sample of my writing, and a qualified expert can suggest changes to my writing style. That is, if such a service exists.
Thanks in advance :)
Edit: I am willing to pay money.
All talk, no play
Do members of the RPG maker community spend too much time discussing development of games, and not enough time developing them? Do you think that discussing game mechanics with others dilutes the artistic integrity of your game, or do you like the open method of suggestion? If we created graphics and maps just to be like others, wouldn't we all end up with roughly the same game? Where does innovation come in?
I am of the understanding that collaboration is good, but if a developer becomes frustrated with their lack of progress in their game, or lack of innovation or general dissatisfaction of the game, what is at fault? Is it simply lack of ability? Will a person who has struggled to achieve an artistic goal, whether it be game making or not, ever achieve their goal? What is the optimal combination of components to spur on growth in this area? Or is it simply beyond one's reach?
An even more frightening question: if we realize that creating the thing that we want to create is beyond our reach - should we even try in the first place? Is the process fun enough to continue? Will "settling for less" be good enough? And is this notion particular to personal preference, or is there an objective statement to be made about the fruits of creativity not appeasing the ambitions of your own mind?
The Top RM Games Of All Time
RMN's Favorite RM Games of All Time List
What Is This?
List your Top 10 Favorite RPG Maker games and I will aggregate the scores and add them to this list.
I've been thinking about doing a "best of RPG Maker games" list for a long time now. I just didn't know how to start. I wanted to know what people believed were the greatest RPG Maker games of all-time, but everyone has different opinions. The question has been asked before, but I want to be able to create a shared list aggregated by everyone's collected views. Plus, there have been many excellent games released since that thread was active, so I have decided to create a new one to attempt to fill that gap.
How it works
  • You are to post your Top 10 RPG Maker Games (in your opinion) as a comment in this thread, or as many as you can think of.
  • They must be in order of greatness, otherwise I will just assume you listed them in order of greatness.
  • Games on your list must be made using any engine made by Enterbrain. The list does not include games made in Wolf Editor, Unity, Game Maker, or other engines made by third parties just because the list might grow very broad, very quickly.
  • Free and commercial games are both allowed.
  • Episodic games will be judged on a case-by-case basis whether they should be grouped together or not. It will usually be judged by factors such as the length of each episode, and how they are packaged as a whole.
  • Votes for your own game won't be counted lol
When users post their top 10 lists, I will use their lists and edit this top post to include the globalized list of all the most highly ranked games. The games will be ranked according to a simple scoring system, which I will explain below.
Scoring system
Each Top 10 list posted in this thread contains 10 entries, which are in order from #1 (the best in the list), to #10 (the worst in the list). The points awarded to the game for the ranking in each persons' list are as follows:
  • 1st place -- 10 points
  • 2nd place -- 9pts
  • 3rd place -- 8pts
  • ...
  • 10th place -- 1pts
These points will be added to each respective game's total, and the globalized Top RM Games of All Time List will be sorted in order of points the games have earned, from highest to lowest.
What Type of Developer Are You?
Recently I've realized that I may not be the type of developer I thought I was. The way I see it, there are many different types of developers, with several strengths and weaknesses. I have realized that part of the reason why I struggle sometimes as a developer is because I focus on making a game that I think I "should" be making, focussing on things such as art and polish of style etc. But I realize that I am not a good artist, and other people in the world are far better artists than I. I also sometimes make the mistake of thinking I am a good writer, but I am only medium-to-fair at writing skills, especially when it comes to constructing a plot or characters.
I also began to wonder why my serious game "Darga" was far less enjoyable game than my game I made for fun "Maximus Jones". And it's not just because it's less well-received, even I enjoyed Maximus Jones more than Darga, both the making of it and the playing of my own game. I'm more proud of Maximus as a game, so why is that? Because I spent far less effort and took it far less seriously?
Then it came to me. My strength is in eventing and puzzle design, as well as making entertaining experiences for the player. I sometimes focus too hard on atmosphere and artistic merit of the game, when I think my skills are more suited towards making a fun diversion for the player. I also realize I enjoy developing these type of games a lot more.
Has anyone else had a similar epiphany regarding what "type" of developer they are? Do you need to re-examine yourself and realize that maybe you are reaching for an unattainable goal, and it does not fit your skill set? Not everyone can make that triple-digit-hour RPG with all those custom systems, but if it's your forte then why not do it? Perhaps the fun of the development has been drained because you're trying to fit into the expectations of what you want to develop?
Something to think about.
[Poll] What do you think about multiple endings?
A large number of games, developed in the RPG Maker engine or otherwise, boast that they have multiple possible endings to the story. It's usually where the player's performance at crucial plot points, usually good vs. evil moral choices, get a "good" or "evil" ending. Others feature branching storylines, where dialogue choices and moral decisions change the storyline drastically. Some games even encourage players to view all endings to understand the game's overarching narrative.
What do you think of this? Is it good when a game has multiple endings like this, or do you hate it?
Nominating Commercial Games for Misaos
Why can't I nominate You Are Not The Hero for most promising demo just because it is recently going commercial?
