JUST KIDDING! XD Chrono Trigger is probably my favorite RPG of all time :D
Frankly, I was disappointed in the bonus content added for the DS remake. It is very shitty.

Yeah, but the original game still holds up. :D

Aw I thought this was serious! :P

I'm not disappointed with it at all, but when I look back at it, it didn't really do a whole lot of "new" things and it's story was both generic and campy... But I almost think that's part of what made it fun.

It's one of those games, much like the Kirby series, that gets me thinking of what really matters in games overall. Does being fun matter more than trying to be different?

I think both are very important, but I value "fun" slightly more than being different, especially if the attempt at different-ness is done poorly. If you have a fun game with characters that I love, I won't mind if it's not breaking new territory.

If we're talking about Chrono Trigger, I've never played it in my life. If we're talking about Chrono Trigger, well, no, I don't think I was disappointed with it at all.

I tried to get my roommate to play Chrono Trigger and he immediately hated it.

He hated that he had to run around a pointless little fair in what he called an "extended cutscene" where had no ability to actually do anything of his own will, and had to just play out the story. There was nothing for him to do but sit and watch what unfolded, so why does he have to run around and waste time with all this shit? Can't the game just play the cutscene and let us move on? Is the whole game going to be like this? Fuck this game.

But he hates all JRPGs. So its moot.

What confuses me is that he specifically hates JRPGs. I guess because he's into Dungeons and Dragons. So if your game doesn't A) Make meticulously complete and coherent sense with its in-game logic without any loopholes whatsoever and B) Allows you complete customization of your character and the freedom to do whatsoever that character chooses to do, your game is shit.
D&D... without loopholes? Shit it's a running joke that the answer to 'why' or 'how' or 'what the fuck' involving anything D&D is always 'a wizard did it'. Conversely it also answers how to create your character because if you aren't a spell caster you're already fucked (by all the spell casters)
When I first met Chrono Trigger I'd already been in to some jRPG games but I'd heard good things about it on the internet so I gave it a go. And loved it to bits. Yes, I bought the PSX version and the DS one when they came out.

I wouldn't say it's my favourite game, but it's definitely up there in the top 10 list for me. ^.^

It does a lot of things right and even though I played it well after it came out, it did a lot of new things that weren't around back then. The battle system alone was something fresh with a new twist, and the music was to die for (later eclipsed by its sequel's music. Good God, Chrono Cross music is the best music bar fucking none). Hell, the characterisation was really good for a game with a mute protagonist and the plot twists were great. Add in time travel - a barely-touched-apon element in games back then - and your choices making a difference to the timeline (on top of multiple endings and the ability to take out the last boss at the start of the game thanks to New Game +) and at the time it was a very original, interesting and fun game to play.

It still is.

I got into Chrono Trigger when it came out for the DS. Loved it SO much!

EDIT: I guess to be more specific, considering my recent post as to why I wasn't a fan of FF6: It was the characters that really sold it for me. Not just in story but in gameplay too. Each character was so unique and diverse that it was hard not to get attached to them. I've never played another RPG where you had a frog lick party members to heal them.

I also point to Chrono Trigger whenever I mention how awesome silent protagonists can be. Crono felt a little unrealistic at times (hey, I'm gonna jump into a timewarp to go save a complete stranger because I'M A HERO!!) but he was a great character to project onto because of his blank slate personality.

Also, the battles were on the map, which was awesome because it helped make fighting a bit more... realistic, if that makes any sense.
You need to play Suikoden 2 and 5 if you want to see silent protagonists done well. (Though Chrono was definitely well done in a lot of ways.) ^.^ The spritework that went in to 2 (and 1 as well, I suppose, but 2 is so much better) and the details with expressions in 5 are really good and help make the characters more than a blank slate to project on to (which is the reason for a silent protag).
