Trying to figure out where I stand on the Rips vs No-Rips stance in my own works.

I'm not trying to start an argument over whether using Rips is okay or not, this is purely me trying to figure out how I want to deal with the matter in my own works. Recently, there's been a lot of discussions on it and it's forced me to do some thinking. Although I'm striving to have more and more of my game content be purely original and I plan to have most of my future games be rip-free, there are still some areas where I'm debating things in my mind.

For example, I have an old RPG Maker XP game that I want to go back and finish someday. But it uses a lot of rips. I wonder if I should just state upfront that this is the case when I release it, or should I go to the monumental trouble of making new tilesets for everything? Also I don't own the rights to the music or anything, so that would need to be fixed, too...

I also had planned to use an obscure Japanese RPG game's soundtrack for a future game, but that's problematic, too. It seems that I have a lot to think about.

If it's an old game, I'm sure people will understand the use of rips. I certainly wouldn't start a new project now with the intent of using lots of them, but I don't think having one or two ripped assets is going to cause an uproar. As long as they're used appropriately (No Chrono Trigger sprites mixing with Ace RTP), and you're not stupid enough to sell your game, you should be fine. I would certainly make a credits page or some other way to make it ABUNDANTLY CLEAR that you're using someone else's work.

The biggest temptation for me is music. Sometimes the music I have now just doesn't fit the mood I'm trying to go for, and I see a copyrighted song that could fit the moment perfect. I either have to alter the scene, or use that asset.

Yea, if it's an old or small project, trying to make a whole smorgasbord of custom assets sounds like a hell of a lot of work. That would probably be enough to demotivate me, haha.

I personally wouldn't care so long that the game is both free to play and you give credit.
