Hype hype hype hype hype!
By beat do you mean complete, because o/ here too.xD
unity, I'm not being hyped about this, I'm not. I'm going to calmly wait for LA to be done and then I'm going to close my door, put my phone on silent and play, giggling insanely to myself as I do so.
But I'm not hyped.

I also want to avoid the opposite problem, making it too big >.<;; XD
No way. Go ape. Make it huge. Fill it with split pathways, battles that suck item stockpiles dry, super bosses guarding amazing gear, and force the player to divide the party at least once. Then give the last boss three or more forms (two is cliche), or just one really huge form.
If can only be too big if you're planning on post-game content. Otherwise, the final dungeon is the coup de grace. It's there to test every strategy and force out every resource the player's developed. Make 'em earn your ending.

wait somebody has actually beat hero's realm
I might not have not been able to if the final dungeon was a thing.
post-game content is dumb. your final boss should be the finale... at the very least, it should be the strongest challenge that any pre-finale sidequests build up to.
i kinda agree though. just don't make suikoden 2's final dungeon, so booorrrinngggg despite being such a great game.

Hehe, I'm doing most of those (though the party split-up actually happens one dungeon before the final one). I guess I just don't want to make it too massive, as in so massive that I get a lot of people saying "Great game, but I never beat it because I got tired of that huge final dungeon." I'm probably worrying too much, though ^_^;;

There won't be any post-game content. All the extra goodies and bonus bosses are just there to help you against the final boss ^_^
