RPG Maker MZ!

What an exciting trailer, I'm glad they focused on the 3 main features found in every previous version.

That said I've seen the leaked screenshots of the new features and there's nothing to bring me back to the engine once Shooty and the Catfish is finished. Its time for me to move onto other tools that are a bit more modern and versatile.

Problem is none of those popular examples or even the runner up ones are made in RPG Maker. To the Moon and LISA are highlighted as big examples but uh they're very old examples of the 2011-2013 early Steam momentum. We're not even honing in on the exact format RPG Maker game favs typically follow. So it's really up in the air whether or not the RPG is still "viable" let alone a game made in RPG Maker. I just wouldn't bet on it most of the time.

What was the last legitimate RPGM game to make a big splash? I know Jimmy was a hit with a niche audience but it didn't seem to get the love that a lot of us had hoped it would. I guess Heartbeat was kind of biggish when it launched (I know there's also a lot of justified controversy surrounding the game too) but it faded into obscurity pretty quick. She Dreams Elsewhere has been getting some mainstream press buzz which is fantastic but that's all I have really seen RPGM wise in recent years.

Though customizing stuff so it runs well on smaller resolutions IS a pain.

Try getting it to run at the Gameboy aspect ratio as I did, I had to break the engine so badly to make it work, especially the UI. -_-

Weird! It runs at 60fps on Firefox with 5439384590 other tabs open, to me.

And I got 16gb ram and a GT420

Considering this demo is running at 381x216 (this is a lower vertical resolution than the Super NES and Genesis ran at) you would hope it would run at 60fps... There's also not much in the way of events going on in these small maps either. It's a nice proof of concept.

TBH while Paper Maker is definitely cute and charming, and I won't doubt it's stronger than Smile Game Builder... I feel like it's highly likely it'll be easier to make something practical with MV3D. That being said, I do want to check it out! It looks really neat. I'm dying to see their reinterpretation and re-implementation of RPG Maker staples. I'm sure it won't be entirely comprised of steps backwards like some other indie RPG Makers

I have messed around with MV3D a bit and it runs so badly on my machine, mind you I'm running 32gb ram and a GTX1080. It's neat in concept and definitely impressive but it's so apparent that it's pushing the engine well past its absolute limits. Maybe one day they will be able to optimize it to a point where it's actually practical but until that day.

That said if I can playtest the games I have made in MV on a 7 year old android phone or my now 12 year old macbook with them still running at 60fps I don't know what more to tell you other than maybe the MV games you have been playing that run at 2fps have not been well made.
I used to have the exact same issue, running on a rather decent 6-core 2012 asus processor. It wasn't top of the line but not bad either.

Then I spent $20 on a really old and shoddy GPU and the FPS skyrocketed to 60.
Apparently MV is the first RM to make use of GPU and if you have a computer that's relying on a bad onboard GPU you will feel it. And ASUS apparently has the worst onboard GPUs?

All I'm saying is, y'all should try getting a shitty secondhand really old GPU and plug it into the computer. All of a sudden MV might shoot to 60 FPS, too.

Asus has the worst of almost everything, but they also market themselves as budget options so it makes sense.

All in all Paper RPG Maker is looking like a much better and more interesting option now. I'll have to put some time into it once I'm done with Shooty and the Catfish. This trailer is great and dropped at the PERFECT time.

Let's just call the next one Yume Nikki Maker and get on with it
I mean if we're gonna be honest it's "porn game with stolen CG assets maker" at this point.
Yeah, what's the deal with there not being many porn games with original assets? :/
I'm pretty sure those are all made by the same small handful of developers that mass-produce them as quickly as possible, so it's probably more time-effective to use RTP.

If I could draw porn id be making porn games like nobodies busine$$.

I'm surprised so many people are upset about it requiring 8gb RAM though? What year is it? I know a lot of kids are using hand me down computers but come on. My decade-old MacBook had 16gb RAM. I know not everyone is lucky enough to have 32gb like I do for work I do but jeez...
Yeah man I mean screw like 65% of Latin America and the third world at large who previously could play MV games with an amazing 2fps, now they'll be able to experience the glory of not running games at all.

You know, I figured at this point in the game I wouldn't find first world "what year is this??? I mean like, get with the times!" commentary like this grating, but here I am, getting steamy over someone's probably misinformed but not malintentioned comment.

First of all the engine requires 8gb ram, which doesn't mean exported games do. That said if I can playtest the games I have made in MV on a 7 year old android phone or my now 12 year old macbook with them still running at 60fps I don't know what more to tell you other than maybe the MV games you have been playing that run at 2fps have not been well made.

Windows 10 is the global standard OS now like it or not, and it's a 64bit OS, and the new engine has been clearly designed around its 64bit architecture. It might sound selfish but I don't think designing a brand new engine to run on a baseline of long obsolete hardware is a very good business move, especially when you still have several older, and more importantly, cheaper engines that are designed for those devices and are still readily available on the market.

Edit: There's an event list now so you can see exactly what all the events are on a given map without clicking around so that's a pretty big deal. The sort of tool you would hope to find in a modern engine.

Why is this aspect ratio still the default?

Edit: Also why is this image so damn big!?!?!
