Runic Cipher is a long-time JRPG project that's been worked on for several years, on and off. Our goal with this is to bring back that nostalgic feel of the earlier Final Fantasy and Breath of Fire games, as well as having an in-depth and original story line filled with plot twists and with a more gritty edge than your typical RPG. A lot of the writing is inspired by the A Song of Ice and Fire and Malazan Book of the Fallen franchises. If you are a fan of either of them, you're going to enjoy the many surprises Runic Cipher have in stock.

The story follows a young rebel group by the name of EDGE, whose leader, Talon, vows to seek vengeance against the Hilgar Empire for their war crimes against his homeland, Calupa. Alongside Talon, he has the support of Rick, a scout who loves cracking up jokes, and Veronica, an engineer with the acquired knowledge of creating explosives. Throughout the course of their journey, they will meet dozens of other interesting characters, including a few they'd never imagine being on their side...or are they?

A few gameplay ideas Runic Cipher will introduce:
  • A battle system inspired by SNES-era Final Fantasy games with elements of their ability systems.
  • Dungeon design inspired by the early Lufia games.
  • Final Fantasy VI-style party selection system (i.e. setting up teams for a particular dungeon).

We will be releasing content in an episodic format, and hopefully have releases out in a timely basis. We are both perfectionists, so the chapters will be released when they're done. We're not rushing to meet deadlines.

Oh my god, you're continuing this?

Awesome.
The short blurb on the games list says something about it being 'tactile.' Tactile refers to something that can be felt physically, as with one's hands. While it's possible that this is what you meant, it sounds like you want 'tactical' instead.
More screenshots are up. I plan on capturing a few more this weekend.

I have some things on my plate right now but hope to take a look soon. Did I hear you're in need of a writer?
Yeah. I need someone who is good at writing dialogue.
Feedback incoming:

-Long, silent intro, although the map is nice.

-Extremely long waits on dialog.

-I like the wind effects. They really emphasize how empty the plains are. I feel like you could probably get more mileage out of them by using a longer sample, and not using the chrono trigger wind sound, though.

-Dialog is okay. I do like that the cavalry members sound more like modern military than ye olde chivalry brigade, but I wasn't really moved one way or another by most of their lines.

-"Now that the battle has moved to the plains, this is our chance to bare the herald of" should be bear

-Lots of sections without sound. Feels kinda off.

-Dungeon mapping is nice. No random battles is also a plus.

-"couldn't steal" message displays for way too long in combat

-Game difficulty is good. Strategic without being grindy.

-the 'all men with surnames A-F' bit: it would make more sense just to pick men under the command of a specific sergeant or something.

-You've definitely got a knack for interweaving plotlines.

-Solid demo, although the waits are painfully long. Still, it was a lot of fun, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of this.
Of course, I appreciate your feedback. :D

As for the long waits, I'll adjust them better next time. I understand they can be a bit dreadful to sit through, but my intention is to prevent the player from just mashing buttons -- not even paying careful attention to the story. Still, I'll knock a second here and there off from the waits.

The story and dialogue concerns will be forwarded to my writer.

The reason why there aren't that many tracks is that my composer just started working on tunes again, so he was only able to enhance a few of them (like the intro and overworld themes). I'll put a song in (once my composer has something good) the Noviat Castle/cavalry riding the plains segment -- so there's something to hum out to during the scenario.

I had argued with myself over whether or not to include random battles, and instead I've decided on just leaving that (random battles) for the World Map. I don't intend on making this game something you can easily grind on, so more emphasis on strategy than merely boosting your stats.

Again, thanks for your feedback. I'll let you know how things go.

Back in production? what u say?!
Back in production. A demo will be out sometime next week. It should be about an hour's worth of JRPG fun. Working on this thing without hesitation. Recruiting a good writer will do that to you.
One hour, at least. It will be out on December 25th.
