And now it's time for another edition of "I don't play RPGs anymore so I play arcade games and sometimes I review them" by kentona! Next up on our list is the mini-game
Tokens & Tigers by Mikemc. Originally a submission for the community project
Befuddle Quest 3: Love is a Four-Legged Word, Mikemc felt that the game was solid enough to warrant it's own gamepage. Let's see if he's right.
Gameplay: 2.5/5
I'm a sucker for the kind of "run around and collect things" arcade games, popular since the days of yore (say, right around when Pac-Man was released). I love Pac-Man. Tokens & Tigers would be considered a Pac-Man clone if there ever was one. The solid game mechanic still stands as a fun little challenge, but it just isn't enough to sustain a game on its own these days.
In Tokens & Tigers you run around the map avoiding tigers whilst collecting tokens for points. Collecting a cross will turn the ferocious tigers into meek kittens and allow you to "kill" them and send them back to their cage. As a little twist, you must collect a sword that randomly appears on the map to unlock the gate blocking off the upper-right section of the map. However, just collecting all the tokens isn't enough! You are actually required to collect points, and there aren't enough tokens on the map to cross the minimum point threshold. Thus you
must slay some kittens for points to beat the game. (This wasn't obvious the first time I played the game).
Atmosphere: 2/5
This is a remake of an old DOS game in RM2k3 using RTP charsets, chipsets and music. Everything is used respectively well but it's not something to write home about.
Fun Factor: 2/5
Hey, it's Pac-Man with a slight twist. It's pretty fun, but not as fun as the original.
One thing that could really improve this game is more levels. Like 10 more levels. As it stands right now there just isn't enough content to make this a fun game. Some better tiger AI and maybe a few new twists would help, too.
The small scope of the game can be forgiven in a collaborative project, but on it's own it lacking. A complete playthrough of the game takes less than 2 minutes.
Overall: 2/5
A quick little diversion but you're better off to stick with Befuddle Quest 3.
