So tearing apart one book somehow destroys them all?

Brave Hero Yuusha is a front view, turn based, rpg created by SgtMettool using RPG Maker VX Ace. It took me approximately 4 hours to complete this game. To summarize what this review is going to be: The combat is average, but the graphics are amazing.

Story:

You start off as a Hero who needs to save the princess from the evil demon. But things don't go as planned. A mysterious figure, known as the puppeteer, is controlling people and trying to make changes to your story. When you confront the evil demon lord the puppeteer tears apart the castle. The hero is forced to join forces with the demon and the princess. Afterwards they find out that the puppeteer has been taking out pieces of the story. It's your job to restore the pieces of the story.

After completing a segment of the "story" you are brought back to the "real" world where this story is being told. In the real world you get to see the creation of the puppeteer and how he became part of the story.

I thought the premise of the demon and the princess joining your journey was interesting. And as you learn more about the story you can see how each member feels about their part. I particularly liked the parts where the princess would ponder about what would happen to her if she followed her course of the story. On the other hand. my first reaction to the school scenes in the real world were not so positive. I found the content of these scenes lacking and forced. In addition I didn't feel they belonged in the same game.

This game has great custom graphics

Graphics & Sound:

Both of these are pretty well executed. The graphics are custom made and will remind you of old style rpgs back from the day. I could definitely see this game getting nominated in the graphics category during the Misaos. The sounds for the game are basic, but they cover all the bases. The battle music is very fitting and probably the most memorable sound from the game. I did think the game could have used some animations for special attacks, but this is a minor grievance set in a world of beauty.

You won't be surprised by who is the final boss.

Game Play:

The game starts out really simple actually. The first dungeon had me afraid that all I would have to do was press enter to win. But thankfully there is a little depth in this game. I particularly liked the use of status effects. I found these the most useful abilities, especially going against bosses. Most of the enemies don't offer too much of a challenge. Most of your strategy will be against the bosses. Though I found that I would just follow the same strategy for each boss. There was never a point in a boss battle where I felt overwhelmed or pressed to win it. I did find the percentage at which normal enemies could inflict status effects a bit high. In addition you need to use items outside of combat to heal certain effects (I found this slowed down the game a bit.)

Overall:

This is actually a pretty solid RPG. All the elements you would expect to be here are here. The story is interesting and the graphics are amazing. And while it's not the perfect game, it still gets a 4 / 5 from me.

Thank you for the review! The criticisms were about what I was expecting, so this is good feedback about where to go in the future.
