A Fabulous RMventure!

Title: Sasha and Sir Plutarch's fabulous Rmventure!
Author: Nirwanda
Play Time: 20-30mins (short game, finished)

SASHA AND SIR PLUTARCH'S FABULOUS RMVENTURE!

I like the title music but the title screen itself doesn't feel right. Maybe this is a play at RM games basic title screens but not sure if that will come off to the average player. Could be better!

This is a well made game, I'll start off with that. It's cute, fun and simple. It's a very short game but could possibly take longer if you don't connect all the dots.

STORY/WRITING:
The story is one we call I relate with...the creation of a rpg maker game! Except this time around you are accompanied by a talking rat. If you haven't guessed it yet you the player are Sasha, the game designer!
While this game plays on the idea of a developer looking for a team to make their magnum opus RM game it doesn't suffer from overstating any references or outright shout-outs or something along those lines you might expect of a game that is based on a hobby/community.
so +1 on that, maybe more than on but I like small numbers so +1 DEAL WITH IT!

Annnywho...the writing itself is very well done. A breath of fresh air compared to other games I've been playing recently. I like the back and fourth between Sasha and Sir Plutarch. So here, I'll just own up to the fact that I'll be throwing the word "like" around a lot with this game. Because I like it. I also really just generally like the writing style of the game. It's flows well, very genuine and Earthbound/Pokemon vibe. It's simple and works so well in its favor.
The NPCs are fleshed out for only having a few lines themselves and you get a feeling of a small, very cartoony town. It just works. I like it. You will like it too.

Recently we have seen an influx of people like this. The difference? Sasha actually rolls up her sleeves and gets out there and does something about it. Even spending 500 bucks for music! WOW. If only it worked that way.

Is this sexist? Women usually have feminine and (hopefully) ladylike hands, right? Ahhh, whatever. I'll over look it because I think that's a reference to RMN!

So, here's some criticism if you can call it that. There's some very minor grammatical errors:

This is a bit of a double whammy. Circumstances is misspelled and also, wouldn't lady cologne be perfume? If it is in fact intended for a woman...

"Mystery" I would assume?

"Is that all it takes?"

Okay, I think that's it. I'll stop. I'll message the developer with any others. (P.S this was a good way to showcase the game while also being helpful)

GRAPHICS:
Soooo, the graphics. I like them. A lot. Are they custom or are they a DS Resource Pack or some other graphic Resource Pack? Either way, I love the style and the way they are used. So +1000000 on that one, see those numbers mean nothing.
The mapping works for the game, no qualms there. Very well done and I don't think I noticed any mapping errors. Although when you walk into a building into the black teleport spot you can see the sprite barely on both sides of that square. I'm guessing the character sprite it too wide to be completely covered. Not a big deal at all, just the only think I noticed.
Both the graphics and mapping are great and very cute/quaint. :D
Play this game for that alone if you like cutesy graphics, characters and NPCs.

I like gangs. Gangs are cool, but stay in school ya'll.

MUSIC:
The music is great! Very cheery and bouncy with a good rhythm to the happenings in game. I can't tell you what music is used but it's fresh to me and I like it. I LIKE IT, OKAY!?
There's a few different tracks that are played in certain places but I think there's like only three or four unique tracks including the title screen, if that.
It fits perfectly with the atmosphere of the game.
+2 points because meh, why not. You already got 1000001 points, so.

GAMEPLAY:
The gameplay presented here is very simple. It's adventure through and through. You tromp around looking for a team to create your masterpiece game. A coder, a musician and an artist. You've been here, haven't you? You have at least dreamed of it, don't lie. I SAID DON'T LIE!

Why would you be searching through your parent's clothes? Weirdo.

Okay, so this is a reference to Fallout 3, right? As well as the Tunnel Vipers, right? RIGHT!? I love you, forget like, it's love now.
And don't be fooled by these empty shelves, each one has its own unique text.

So gameplay is basically running around town to find your team and helping others along the way. Pretty nice message, actually. Even though your rat disapproves of helping others sometimes, even he softens to the idea. But only to further his and Sasha's dream of course.

Overall, very fun and cute game. And since I haven't out right said it yet...
ALL THE ANIMALS CAN TALK!
Yes, that's right. In this world all animals have the ability to speak, so it kinda makes you wonder about some things. Like does Sasha change in front of her pet rat? I mean, after all he is quite sentient. Then again, nothing could actually happen between Sasha and Sir Plutarch but they are pretty close so maybe it's not a big deal.
I HIGHLY recommend this game to anyone that enjoys a short adventure game with cute graphics and to developers for a story we can all relate with.

An absolute treasure considering this was made in a short time!

Please don't tell me this is an april fool's joke. I can't stop smiling :D
Thanks for the through review and I'm extremely happy it was so positive. I'll get fixing those grammar issues...and I don't know what else to say so again: Thanks! :D
BTW:
The graphics are the Old School Modern pack. And the music was shamelessly taken from the page of a musician who calls himself Pice. (according to his newgrounds profile, it's free for non-commercial)
EDIT: I might as well answer some of your comments....
- Actually, I can't make a title screen to save my life. That's why I made a generic rpg cover. Hoping people would be kind :P
- About the ladylike joke, actually I didn't even think about the Real Man Network. I just wanted to make a funny about Sir Plutarch acting like a jerk but being completely incompetent as usual. Still, If anybody asks I'm totally referencing RMN. :P
-Hahahaha I just noticed a typo in one of your screenshots "That mades me so glad"
-Don't worry no one will know about our forbidden love.
-About the animals, it's best to not start thinking too deeply about it. There's a reason there no meat shelf in the market. :P

Nope! No foolin'!
I can see why that would be suspicious though lol Damnit, now thinking about it I should have scored it real low and then been like HAHA JK APRIL FOOLS! here's 4.5*

You're quite welcome! I enjoyed myself and even though they were resource packs it was new to me so that helped a lot. Even so I still haven't see them used much, at least not around here. Considering the music is from elsewhere it matches quite perfectly, so kudos on the choices!

I was having a hard time trying to pick a few points I thought could be improved or like the typos but that was difficult. Very smooth, well made game but it was the writing that really shined to me. So even though this is an attainable resource pack for anyone with $$$ I would suggest it based on the writing alone. :)

Also, I have to ask...is there a way to see the mayor? Or write on his statue in the park? Like was there slight alternate routes you could have taken with the items or did I miss a second can of Winning Soda or a sharpie/spray paint can so I could deface the supposedly bastard mayor's statue?
Well, thanks a lot again. It's very encouraging to hear that my writing is enjoyable. :)
Nah, you can't see the dastardly mayor, and his statue, just like the mirror in your house and some other interactables....or the comments when using the wrong thing somewhere, are there just for fun and to help me characterize a little more the game world and characters.
The statue can be defaced in several ways, you can paint him a mustache with the blue paint, glue feathers to it with the glue, splash it with a little bit of that wretched winning soda and throw an apple at him (there's an endless supply of them at the fridge), there's also an extra bit of dialogue if you pull out the crowbar :P.
BTW, I edited my first post with some answers to your review just as you where making your post, so you might want to check up my previous post :P

Ahh, I think I stopped trying to deface it with items, but that makes a lot of sense. I figured that the mayor was more for world building, so that's cool.
Any chance that the game will be expanded in the future?
Or it is what it is?

As for the titlescreen I think you could go really simple with it, if you ever wanted to change it. Maybe just a bright colored background with the title over it or something would work and honestly look much better. Because that's really the only complaint graphically.
At the very least I'd remove the dragon borders!

The "Real Man" comment was probably actually a stretch but it's now officially a reference!

And yes, lol the "mades me so glad" was actually a typo screen that I misused instead of a very similar shot of the gang. xD

Forbidden love shhhh

Haha, and yeah that seems about right. Can't really eat something that talks to you I would imagine.
Well I kinda got lazy with the mayor's office and the lakeshore in that they have very few interactables, so that's kind of a bone to pick I have with the game as it is. But honestly, I'm pretty satisfied with it and am working on another project now. So, even though I'm fond of the characters and their world, I don't think I'll revisit it (except maybe as a cameo in my next game :P)
Hmmm I'll think about the title screen, but, truth be told, I'm kind of afraid of ruining even a simple one.
Any other typos you might have noticed?
It's okay, it's a secret to everybody!
Hahahaha I would imagine everyone is vegetarian in this world. :P

Ah, that's understandable. I get that. It is very good even without further expansion. Nice and short which is better sometimes!

Have you thought about maybe a script that let's you have a map as your title screen? Something like a cat chasing Sir Plutarch around or something along those lines? It really isn't a big deal, once you get past the titlescreen the rest of the game will draw you in. It's just off putting. But don't worry about it if you don't wish to revisit it. :)

No other typos to report, I believe!
I'll think about it. Thanks for the typo report I've uploaded a new version adressing them.
Wow, this is a really favorable review. You are very lucky. :)
I wish I could write reviews like this one...
Indeed, I'm really happy Infection liked the game so much. About writing, you might ask Infection himself for tips. Though, like with any such endeavor, it's one of those things you get better at with time. So you might want to just go out there nd do it. What's the worse that could happen?

Yes, it's a great game!

Also, it isn't that hard. I don't think of myself as a great writer by any means. But it comes easy when you like something.
What I usually do though as I play a game, I open up notepad or any other similar writing pad program will do and take notes on anything and everything I'm thinking at the moment while playing or go back and add to if need be.
I also open up Paint and screenshot any screen that I like/think is well designed or the complete opposite where it has mapping errors or grammar errors/typos.

It really doesn't take much, just try to cover key points of Story/Writing, Graphics, Gameplay, Music and giving thoughts before and after of the experience.
Reviews don't need screenshots, but I like adding them and always makes the review seem bigger. It also kinda helps anyone reading the review who hasn't played the game see some more screenshots that aren't in the images section.

I can echo Nirwanda's suggestion about really just trying and getting out there and learning from experience! :D
OOOohhhh, I thank both of you! ;><; for kindly replying to my silly comment...
I won't wish but do something that can improve my writing skills, and myself too.

Never forget poopoose, that if you feel that you don't have enough or can't convey your thoughts, just leave a semi-review as a comment on the person's gamepage! :D
It's easy with no screening process and you can still put your feelings about the game out there and maybe it can help you improve. :)
Ah! that's true! XD
A semi-review, you've mentioned, sounds really nice to me. Though it might likely to be a semi-semi-review or something that brief expressions.
I have actually enjoyed your review so I'm thinking I want to write reviews like yours for someday.

Thank you :D

It's an easy style that allows you to cover point by point. Even when you like something though try to find some feedback or criticism that can help the developer, so a Pros/Cons kinda thing to help keep the review not overly and absolutely positive praise.

If I can do it so can you! :P
Lot of helpful advices, thanks! :D
I can completely agree on it. Though I think your review is almost absolutely positive.
Yeah, you're kinda right. The only bad thing he has to say about the game is about my sucky english, I believe.
I hope you get to review a lot of games poopoose. Good luck. :)
Thanks!
And I feel like my English has gotten better a bit. XD

I really wonder why either Nirwanda or poopoose believe they need to make excuses for their English.
I can tell you that many of us who are born and raised in this country have trouble speaking the language than either of you.

You are both doing very well with your language skills :)
Thank you Linkis, though I HAVE to admit my english is far from perfect. Sometimes I get confused with spelling or write sentences using spanish synthax, which sounds weird when tranlated literally to english.
Wow, I'm glad to hear that, Linkis!
Actually I speak and hear English very very few, so that I cannot talk to native speakers. I can write English in a very simple way but it's because of the large amount of time taken for making sure that they are at least understandable in meaning.

I decided to play this game because not only it looked interesting but also its summary description was quite plain/readable, and didn't particularly doubt it is common English, although I had rarely felt a bit odd about the words in the game when I was playing it.

Sorry for my dull scribble... Terribly! X(
