Here it goes; quantity over quality...

...And by quantity over quality, I refer to this review. I'm making it because it's a requirement of the Strawberry Review Jam to get the Bacon Jelly badge.

Name: The Retreat

Developers: Seiromem, Loser, Irili

Story: The world is overrun by demons. You are the leader of an elite combat force that has been slaughtered. You're the only one left. Your goal is to escape the demons, get the information that will be their downfall to your government and make it home to your children.

Gameplay: Upon leaving the first screen, you are on a map with five soldiers, equaling three touch encounters. Technically, they're not touch encounters, since their seeing you is enough to initiate a fight. You can sneak past them rather easily, but this is the only finished map so...you can't leave the area. You can find three potions on the map. Since you have nothing else to do, you may as well fight the soldiers. Each soldier goes down in about three hits, and you'll have to use a potion in each fight and still come out with only half of your life, so it's a safe bet you can't take all of these soldiers. If you do manage to kill them all, you have an empty map to explore. You find a love letter to some anonymous maiden in places unknown by one of the soldiers you just killed and your character will totally not make the connection that you just killed the soldier that wrote that letter. And that's it. That's all there is. I just spoiled the whole thing for you.

Writing: Excellent grammar; mistakes look like honest to goodness typos. The main character waxes a little on the dramatic side. She also tends towards the sappy side. Sorry, obviously this is a demo of a game that was only intended as something to show for the McBacon Jam. Obviously, it was not ready for presentation. I'm commenting on what's available, which is very little. Premise is sound, formulaic, thematic and a lot of other words ending in -ic. Once there's a game, it should be enjoyable. It certainly sounds like my kind of story. Demon's? Check. Deadly heroine with strong maternal instincts? Check. I find nothing wrong here. Unfortunately, this game is at a stage of development so early that the story could end up being entirely rewritten, so by the time a real demo comes out, this review may not even apply to this game anymore.

Graphics: Basic RTP except for the busts, which are nicely drawn...well, there's one, anyway.

Conclusion: There's nothing here. It's not ready and there's nothing ready to critique. It's an interesting premise and I'll certainly be paying attention to it, provided the developers intend on going forward now that the McBacon Jam has ended. No rating and no projected rating.
