Sacred Reviews: I Woke Up In A Generic RPG Maker Game Guess I'll Grind?

Intro

In some ways reviewing "I Woke Up In A Generic RPG Maker Game Guess I'll Grind?" is probably going to be a bit of a challenge. This is because this project was apparently abandoned while in early development. At least I'm guessing that's the case considering the last update for this game was posted in March of 2022. So while there are a few downloads for this project. All of those downloads were meant to get feedback on the combat system and early shop prices. As such there isn't much story to be had in the demo. And while I will talk about what little we do get. It does mean our main driving force for grinding is because we have nothing better to do. And if that's the case I'd rather spend time grinding in other projects that have stalled out at the moment.

Story
Summary

The game begins by introducing us to the Goddess of Pseudo Random Number Generations or PRNG for short.

Yes apparently we were another victim of truck-kun. Jeez, that truck has a higher kill count than Hanzo the Salamander at this point.

At any rate we apparently died a hero and are being reincarnated in world where dice rolls decide everything. So prepare yourself for some table top gaming since were going to be rolling for naturals 20s in order to stay alive in this game's weird universe. And that's basically all we get before being allowed to roll for our starting stats and given the option to choose our class.

Gameplay

On the gameplay front the game utilizes a very basic turn-based combat system with very little going for it. There are a few differences such as the game appearing to roll dice to determine if our attacks hit or miss and rolling for damage as well. As a result the game feels a lot more random than most RPGMaker games. Though the game also provides a monster tweak I hate. Instead of monsters coming in at a set value their stats are also the byproduct of RNG. This means you can just be wandering around aimlessly taking slimes out left, right, and center only to walk into one that is several times more powerful than normal if the stars align. As a result it's hard to know if your in a good or bad position at the start of a fight. And I've really learned to hate uncertainty over the years.

And unless your lucky you'll probably be starting the run out broke. So you won't be able to spend your meager starting cash on a shiny new spear or armor upgrades either.

Graphics and Sound

As far as I'm aware this project relies entirely on the RTP for both of these aspects of the game. As such this game looks and sounds like a lot of other games despite constantly having the results of dice rolls pop up on screen. And while I really don't feel like discussing the RTP in detail considering it's been talked about to death over the years. I will point out that the maps in this game tend to be very boring, overly large, and at times the developer's maps are far too symmetrical for their own good.

So ugly!

Conclusion

While I think dionthorn had some interesting ideas. The current build is far too devoid of content for me to really know if this game was going to be good or not, but with a title suggesting this game is meant to be a grindy mess of a game. I'm guessing it would have met a similar fate to "Jotun Colosseum" by Illy.
